A parasitic hemoflagellate of the subgenus Leishmania leishmania that infects humans and rodents. This taxonomic complex includes species which cause a disease called Oriental sore which is a form of cutaneous leishmaniasis (LEISHMANIASIS, CUTANEOUS) of the Old World.
