Definice

Proteus - rod bakterií běžně se vyskytujících v tlustém střevě a rovněž v půdě, které mohou způsobit různé infekce, obv. v již poškozených místech (např. močové, kožní infekce, záněty středního ucha, mening, pobřišnice aj.). Gramnegativní bakterie řazené do čeledi Enterobacteriaceae, tvarově velmi rozmanité. Kultivačně je nápadný plazivý růst, biochemicky tvorba ureázy a produkce amoniaku infekce predisponuje i k vzniku urolitiázy. Sérologicky se rozlišují podle O- a H-antigenů. Nejběžnější jsou druhy P. mirabilis, P. vulgaris, P. pennerii, P. myxofaciens. Některé druhy byly do těchto rodů přeřazeny. P. je blízký rodům Morganella a Providentia. Z antibiotik se používají aminopeniciliny, aminoglykosidy, fluorochinolony, cefalosporiny 3. generace; s ohledem na možnost rezistence je třeba stanovit citlivost. (cit. A genus of gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria that occurs in the intestines of humans and a wide variety of animals, as well as in manure, soil, and polluted waters. Its species are pathogenic, causing urinary tract infections and are also considered secondary invaders, causing septic lesions at other sites of the body.
