Definice

Shigella - rod gramnegativních nepohyblivých bakterií z čeledi Enterobacteriaceae. Kultivačně jsou náročnější než většina enterobakterií. Dělí se do čtyř podskupin A-D. Patogeneticky je důležitá produkce toxinů shiga toxin. Jsou enteroinvazivní a mohou se intracelulárně množit se vznikem vředů a nekrózy. Infekce je omezena lokálně. Patogenní jsou primárně pro člověka a primáty - způsobují bacilární dysenterii. K infekci stačí malé množství bakterií (méně než 200 mikroorganismů). (cit. A genus of gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria that ferments sugar without gas production. Its organisms are intestinal pathogens of man and other primates and cause bacillary dysentery (DYSENTERY, BACILLARY).
