Path integration is thought to rely on vestibular and proprioceptive cues yet most studies in humans involve primarily visual input, providing limited insight into their respective contributions. We developed a paradigm involving walking in an omnidirectional treadmill in which participants were guided on two sides of a triangle and then found their back way to origin. In Experiment 1, we tested a range of different triangle types while keeping the distance of the unguided side constant to determine the influence of spatial geometry. Participants overshot the angle they needed to turn and undershot the distance they needed to walk, with no consistent effect of triangle type. In Experiment 2, we manipulated distance while keeping angle constant to determine how path integration operated over both shorter and longer distances. Participants underestimated the distance they needed to walk to the origin, with error increasing as a function of the walked distance. To attempt to account for our findings, we developed configural-based computational models involving vector addition, the second of which included terms for the influence of past trials on the current one. We compared against a previously developed configural model of human path integration, the Encoding-Error model. We found that the vector addition models captured the tendency of participants to under-encode guided sides of the triangles and an influence of past trials on current trials. Together, our findings expand our understanding of body-based contributions to human path integration, further suggesting the value of vector addition models in understanding these important components of human navigation.

BACKGROUND: Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is common among young athletes and can impact knee stability and control. Wearing proprioceptive knee braces can improve knee control and may reduce the risk factors associated with injury and re-injury, although the effect of such braces after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) is unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aimed to determine the effect of proprioceptive knee bracing on knee control and subjective rating of participants post ACLR during three dynamic tasks. METHODS: Fifteen participants 2-10 years post ACLR performed a slow step down, single leg drop jump, and pivot turn jump with and without a proprioceptive knee brace. Knee kinematics in the sagittal (flexion - extension), coronal (abduction - adduction), and transverse (internal - external rotation) planes were collected using a 3D infrared system. Paired t-tests were performed to explore differences in knee angles and angular velocities between the no brace and brace conditions during the three tasks. After each task, subjective ratings regarding ease of the task were recorded. RESULTS: The brace reduced the peak knee external rotation angle and range of motion in the transverse plane during the pivot turn jump task, and significantly increased the maximum knee flexion angular velocity during the single leg drop jump task. The majority of participants reported that tasks were easier to perform with the proprioceptive brace than without. SIGNIFICANCE: This study confirms that proprioceptive knee braces can significantly influence knee kinematics during dynamic tasks post ACLR. The observed effects were clinically relevant.

Reaching to target locations on the body has been studied little despite its importance for adaptive behaviors such as feeding, grooming, and indicating a source of discomfort. This behavior requires multisensory integration given that it involves coordination of touch, proprioception, and sometimes vision as well as action. Here we examined the origins of this skill by investigating how infants begin to localize targets on the body and the motor strategies by which they do so. Infants (7-21 months of age) were prompted to reach to a vibrating target placed at five arm/hand locations (elbow, crook of elbow, forearm, palm, and top of hand) one by one. To manually localize the target, infants needed to reach with one arm to the other. Results suggest that coordination increases with age in the strategies that infants used to localize body targets. Most infants showed bimanual coordination and usually moved the target arm toward the reaching arm to assist reaching. Furthermore, intersensory coordination increased with age. Simultaneous movements of the two arms increased with age, as did coordination between vision and reaching. The results provide new information about the development of multisensory integration during tactile localization and how such integration is linked to action.

A study by Witchalls, et al. (2013) mentioned that the addition of focal vision to proprioception testing with walking produces greater proprioceptive acuity than peripheral vision alone (measured ankle proprioception in athletes with or without chronic ankle instability during a stepping task on the Active Movement Extent Discrimination Apparatus; AMEDA). According to this study, people with impaired proprioception, e.g., athletes with chronic ankle instability, may profit from looking down during walking or running. This commentary notes that the active stepping task may not be truly comparable to rhythmic stepping, which is characteristic for walking. In addition, we suggest several amendments to the methodology for further studies related to ankle proprioception measurement, e.g., monitoring of proband eye attention during a stepping task or clear objective evaluation of the subject sample.

Few clinical studies have evaluated physiotherapeutic interventions in patients with degenerative cerebellar ataxia. Investigations on the effectiveness of biofeedback-based interventions for training postural control in these patients have not been conducted yet. The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of a 2-week intensive tongue-placed electrotactile biofeedback program for patients with progressive cerebellar ataxia. Subjects were seven adult patients suffering from cerebellar degeneration. Postural control was assessed with static posturography in two sensory conditions eyes open/closed on firm surface. For quantification of postural behavior, we used area, sway path and mean velocity of the centre of foot pressure (CoP). Effects of treatment were determined by comparing Pre, Post and one month follow-up (Retention) experimental sessions. Analysis of measured CoP parameters for tests on firm surface showed a significant main effect of visual condition and no difference across test sessions under open eyes condition. Under eyes closed condition, there were significant differences between Pre versus Post and Pre versus Retention, while the difference Post versus Retention was not significant. Our results suggest that a balance rehabilitation program with postural exercise performed with a head position-based tongue-placed biofeedback system could significantly improve bipedal postural control in patients suffering from degenerative cerebellar ataxia.

The study investigated, documented, compared and analyzed electromyographic activity of selected muscles in the course of two kinds of simple exercise with the use of balance aids. The surface electromyography method was used in seven healthy probands and electromyographic activities of mm. gluteus maximus et medius, m. erector spinae, mm. vastus medialis et lateralis were compared in basic position, in standing on one leg, hovering or and walking while standing still on the balance sandals as well as on the rocker board in the anterior posterior plane. Based on the results obtained the authors recommend to use the cylinder segment as well as balance sandals as suitable aid for activation and strengthening m. gluteus medius. In selecting the aid the authors recommend to consider the degree of training or non-training of the individual and select the aid within the framework of progressive training, i.e. to begin with the simple aids and to continue with the more requiring ones. They also warn against new trends, which have not been so far based on quality research.
