Profiles of health and well-being give an overview of a country’s health status, describing data on mortality, morbidity and exposure to key risk factors together with trends over time. They are developed in collaboration with WHO European Member States. When possible, each report also compares a country to a reference group, which is in this report the whole WHO European Region and the European Union member countries prior to 1 May 2004. To make the comparisons as valid as possible, data are as a rule taken from one source to ensure that they have been harmonized in a reasonably consistent way. The data in the report are drawn from the European Health for All (HFA) database of the WHO Regional Office for Europe. The HFA data are collected from Member States on an annual basis and include metadata that specify the original source of data for specific indicators.

In this paper we have outlined the development of a set of virtual experiences as a tool for keeping active the residents in senior home facilities. Unlike other technologies, virtual reality (VR) can provide the user with an almost perfect feeling of physical being in an imaginary world or a place representing reality and the user can actively influence the storyline. A quantitative survey among managers of senior facilities and the residents showed that both groups of respondents are interested in this new way of keeping seniors active. As for the content of the virtual reality experience, both groups strongly preferred a forest environment and an environment associated with travel. In addition, a survey among residents showed a strong need to be a part of the community. To some extent, this need may be met by a suitable virtual environment scenario, but even more so by the chance to share virtual experiences with others. Keeping seniors active in virtual reality should support social interaction in the senior’s real world and correspond to the framework of activities in the facility.

Aim: Nursing students face both physical and psychosocial risks such as job stress at work during the training period. The aim of the study was to determine the academic and clinical stress, and the ways first-year nursing students cope in their first clinical practice. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used. This study was carried out in the nursing department of Giresun University in Giresun, Turkey. The sampling consisted of 109 nursing students who agreed to participate in this study in the 2014–2015 academic spring term. A Personal Information Form, Ways of Coping Inventory (WCI) and Nursing Education Stress Scale (NESS) were used for gathering data. Results: Students generally had moderate levels of academic and clinical stress. Among the academic stressors, the highest frequencies were given to the preparing for the exam (67.9%). Among the clinical stressors, the highest frequencies were given to being criticized by teachers in clinical environments (56.0%), followed by encountering a dying patient (52.3%) and the fear of making practice errors (51.4%). While students mostly used self-confident and optimistic approaches, the social support seeking approach was employed less. The nursing education stress level varied in students according to gender (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In summary, the academic and clinical practice stress levels of nursing students were moderate in the first clinical practice. Therefore, it is suggested that a mentoring programme should be used to manage and regulate their academic and clinical practice stress level and to increase their positive coping strategies in nursing schools.

In spite of concerted effort, a number of types of cancer are very hard to cure or are beyond any treatment with resection being the only option in a limited number of patients. Therefore, new and efficient therapeutic approach is needed. We have recently discovered that mitochondrial respiration is essential for cancer cells to form and progress tumours. In the context of tumour formation/progression, respiration is unrelated to ATP provision; rather, it is required for efficient pyrimidine synthesis due to the role of respiration in ubiquinone cycling, the coenzyme being essential for the rate-limiting step in pyrimidine de novo biosynthetic pathway. Therefore, we propose that targeting respiration is potentially a very efficient way to treat cancer, since cancer cells will not mutate their genes necessary to maintain respiration. Our hypothesis is that different types of cancer have different requirement for 'respiration threshold' needed for their proliferation. We refer to this phenomenon as 'OXPHOS Addiction' and propose it as a novel approach to efficient tumour therapy.

One of the basic tasks of midwives’ and other sexual and reproductive care professionals’ work is to help people fulfil their family plans. An important tool for achieving this is to offer reliable and relevant information. The aims of this paper are: (1) to map topics currently understood under the term “family planning”; (2) to assess their relevance to the current European situation; (3) to uncover other missing important topics, if needed. Secondary analysis of various documents (e.g. WHO definitions, demographical and medical statistics, relevant research data)showed that the term “family planning” is still being understood only in its negative connotation; thus as a way how not to have children. However, the current situation in developed countries shows that fulfilling parental desires is a similarly important issue. Reproductive healthcare professionals should have a good knowledge of medically assisted reproduction options, their procedures, benefits and risks. They should also be familiar with the causes of infertility (mainly with the avoidable ones), and support their clients on their journey to having a child.

This guidance aims to support European policy-makers to improve the design and implementation of policies to reduce inequities in health. It brings together current evidence on how to develop comprehensive policy action plans to identify and address social determinants of health inequities. While great improvements have been made in health across the WHO European Region, there are still striking contrasts in the standards of health enjoyed by different countries within the Region and by different population groups within these countries. Reducing health inequities and improving governance for health and health equity are key strategic objectives of Health 2020 – the European policy framework for health and well-being endorsed by the 53 Member States of the WHO European Region in 2012. This guide seeks to assist European policy-makers in contributing to achieving the objectives of Health 2020 in a practical way. It draws on key evidence, including from the WHO Regional Office for Europe’s Review of social determinants and the health divide in the WHO European Region . It also provides a framework that policy-makers at national, regional and local levels can apply to their own unique context, in order to consider the processes by which inequities might occur, and to suggest policy interventions that may be helpful in addressing these factors.
