Taeniosis-cysticercosis caused by Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800) is a useful experimental model for biomedical research, in substitution of Taenia solium Linnaeus, 1758, studied during decades to develop effective vaccination, novel anti-helminthic drugs and diagnostic tools. Cysticercosis in mouse (Mus musculus Linnaeus) is achieved by the larval subculturing of the Wake Forest University (WFU) strain of T. crassiceps. Golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus (Waterhouse), has been shown to be the most suitable host for adult forms of parasite in experimental taeniosis. Metacestodes of T. crassiceps WFU multiply by budding without restrictions once inoculated into the mouse, while the number of tapeworms developed from these larvae in hamsters remains highly variable. Three objectives have been proposed to improve the infection of T. crassiceps WFU in hamsters: (1) to re-evaluate the need of immune suppression; (2) to investigate the advantage of infecting hamsters with metacestodes with in vitro protruded scolices; and (3) to compare a number of tapeworms developed from metacestodes subcultured in hamsters against those proliferated in mice. Our results demonstrated that when the evagination of murine metacestodes was high, the number of T. crassiceps WFU adults obtained from hamsters was also high. Immunosuppressive treatment remains relevant for this experimental rodent model. The hamster-to-hamster cysticercosis-taeniosis by T. crassiceps overcame the mouse-to-hamster model in the yield of adult specimens. In vitro scolex evagination and metacestode asexual proliferation in hamsters place this rodent model by T. crassiceps WFU as the most affordable experimental models with taeniids.

The pathological picture of the migration phase of C. tenuicollis in pigs is characterized by a haemorrhagia within the liver parenchyma and under the liver surface. The haemorrhagia, which represents a migrational canal, is induced by the destruction of liver sinuses by migrating larvae. Approximately on day 10 p.i. a serofibrinous peritonitis occurs and free cysticerci appear in the exudate. On days 14-16 p.i. the exudative peritonitis may increase. The cysticerci are localized under the serosas or on them. On about day 10 p.i. even the pulmonary form of the disease may occur. On day 13 p.i. the cysticerci are present in the lumen of lung arteries or they migrate out of them. The changes in the lungs and on the pleura, as well as their dynamic changes, are identical with the changes in the liver and on the peritoneum. The period on days 21-24 p.i. is characterized by extensive synechiae of serosas and the cysticerci are firmly attached to the serosas. On day 35 p.i. the connective tissue adhesions persist and many of the cysticerci exhibit dystrophic changes or are dead and often already calcified. The wall of the pseudocyst, in which the cysticercus is situated, consists of the fibrocytes and serosa, and its cavity is not lined with endothelium, as it is the case in C. bovis and C. cellulosae.

The ultrastructure of the oncospheres of Taenia saginata after treatment with artificial gastric juice is described. After the treatment with the gastric juice, the oncosphere remains in the embryophore. Finger-like processes are formed on the membrane separating the granular layer of embryophore from the oncospheral membrane and micropores arise in the outer unit membrane of the oncospheral membrane. After the treatment with the intestinal juice, the embryophore disintegrates. The oncospheral membrane is again without pores and it is shed off after induction of active movement of the oncosphere. The activity of penetration glands increases: in the first phase, the secretion accumulates beneath the oncospheral membrane and after its shedding there appear granules of other type in the glands. This second phase of secretion seems to be important for the penetration of the oncosphere through the mucosa of the small intestine into the processes. The functional importance of the structural changes observed, the two types of secretion of penetration glands and their relation to pathological changes in the infected organ, and immune reactions are discussed.

The effect of seven fertilizers on the viability of Taenia saginata eggs was tested in vitro. The most destructive effect was produced by lime-nitrogen, in which the eggs survived only for 24 hours in the substance and for two days in a saturated solution. In the limestone the eggs survived for three days.
