Adhesion and colonization of high (2 x 10(8) CFU) and low doses (2 x 10(2) CFU) of Salmonella enteritidis (phage type 4) was determined in the ceca collected 6 h-4 weeks after inoculation (pi), of 1-d-old White Plymouth Rock orally-inoculated chickens. S. enteritidis was associated with the epithelial surface of the villi in the low-dose group 18 h-7 d pi, the penetration in the cecal lamina propria was observed on day 1 and 10 pi. In the high-dose group, adhesion and colonization was observed in all birds killed 6 h-14 d pi; penetration of the bacteria into the cecal lamina propria was seen 1-21 d pi. Large numbers of macrophage-like cells containing S. enteritidis were observed in the cecal lamina propria on days 3-21 pi. Colonization and migration by S. enteritidis in the intestinal tract of chickens was shown to be dose dependent.

Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism and quantitative PCR showed that the cecal microbiota of chicks up to the age of 21 days was dominated by representatives of the orders Enterobacteriales, Clostridiales, and Lactobacillales. Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis infection caused the greatest changes in the gut microbiota when 1-day-old chicks were infected, compared with the infection of 4- and 16-day-old chicks.

In two patients examination of the small intestine by enteroclysis was indicated on account of haemorrhage into the digestive tract and severe anaemia and in one patient the ultrasonographic picture arousing suspicion of Crohn's disease of the terminal ileum. Although in all instances previously colonoscopy was made, considered complete, in one instance also irrigoscopy, with a negative result, enteroclysis revealed and surgery confirmed extensive carcinomas of the caecum and colon ascendens. The authors discuss the value and problems of the applied diagnostic method.

In one-hour intervals before feeding and 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 hours after feeding, three wethers were studied for the quantitative secretion of urea N and ammonia N into the caecum pouch (volume 80 ml). The amount of ammonia N secreted into the caecum ranged from 10.0 +/- 2.8 to 20.0 +/- 3.5 microM/h. The concentration of ammonia N was 271.2 +/- 60.6 microM/l, on the average. The passage of urea N showed no statistically significant differences before and after feeding (37.8 +/- 4.2 - 41.4 +/- 5.0 microM/h). The concentration of urea N in the caecum pouch was from 617.8 +/- 67.8 microM/l to 710.7 +/- 82.1 microM/l. Urea penetrates through the caecum wall into the caecum mostly in the form of a whole molecule, only its small proportion has the form of ammonia, its hydrolysis product.
