soft transition algorithm

Any engineering system involves transitions that reduce the performance of the system and lower its comfort. In the field of automotive engineering, the combination of multiple motors and multiple power sources is a trend that is being used to enhance hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) propulsion and autonomy. However, HEV riding comfort is significantly reduced because of high peaks that occur during the transition from a single power source to a multisource powering mode or from a single motor to a multiple motor traction mode. In this study, a novel model-based soft transition algorithm (STA) is used for the suppression of large transient ripples that occur during HEV drivetrain commutations and power source switches. In contrast to classical abrupt switching, the STA detects transitions, measures their rates, generates corresponding transition periods, and uses adequate transition functions to join the actual and the targeted operating points of a given HEV system variable. As a case study, the STA was applied to minimize the transition ripples that occur in a fuel cell-supercapacitor HEV. The transitions that occurred within the HEV were handled using two proposed transition functions which were: a linear-based transition function and a stair-based transition function. The simulation results show that, in addition to its ability to improve driving comfort by minimizing transient torque ripples and DC bus voltage fluctuations, the STA helps to increase the lifetime of the motor and power sources by reducing the currents drawn during the transitions. It is worth noting that the considered HEV runs on four-wheel drive when the load torque applied on it exceeds a specified torque threshold; otherwise, it operates in rear-wheel drive.

Accurate analysis of sperm cell flagellar dynamics plays a crucial role in understanding sperm motility as flagella parameters determine cell behavior in the spatiotemporal domain. In this study, we introduce a novel approach by harnessing Genetic Algorithms (GA) to analyze sperm flagellar motion characteristics and compare the results with the traditional decomposition method based on Fourier analysis. Our analysis focuses on extracting key parameters of the equation approximating flagellar shape, including beating period time, bending amplitude, mean curvature, and wavelength. Additionally, we delve into the extraction of phase constants and initial swimming directions, vital for the comprehensive study of sperm cell pairs and bundling phenomena. One significant advantage of GA over Fourier analysis is its ability to integrate sperm cell motion data, enabling a more comprehensive analysis. In contrast, Fourier analysis neglects sperm cell motion by transitioning to a sperm-centered coordinate system (material system). In our comparative study, GA consistently outperform the Fourier analysis-based method, yielding a remarkable reduction in fitting error of up to 70% and on average by 45%. An in-depth exploration of the sperm cell motion becomes indispensable in a wide range of applications from complexities of reproductive biology and medicine, to developing soft flagellated microrobots.

The soft x-ray diagnostic is suitable for monitoring plasma activity in the tokamak core, e.g., sawtooth instability. Moreover, spatially resolved measurements can provide information about plasma position and shape, which can supplement magnetic measurements. In this contribution, fast algorithms with the potential for a real-time use are tested on the data from the COMPASS tokamak. In addition, the soft x-ray data are compared with data from other diagnostics in order to discuss possible connection between sawtooth instability on one side and the transition to higher confinement mode, edge localized modes and productions of runaway electrons on the other side.
