In this research, included within the framework of a wider “Impact Analysis Project of New Drugs Legislation” (PAD), we attempted to determine the social costs of illicit drug abuse in the Czech Republic in 1998 in virtue of international methodology standardized in Toronto, Canada in 1996. By utilizing a number of external data and substudies included in this project, we arrived at the amount of CZK 2.8 billion. This represents 0.20% of gross national product. The amount is fully comparable with results of similar studies carried out throughout the world.
