Flumazenil, specifický antagonista benzodiazepinů, byl syntetizován v roce 1979 Hunkelerem. První klinické hodnocení proběhlo v dubnu 1981 v Zurichu. Pro svoji poměrně vysokou cenu je flumazenil málo používán, převážně při kombinovaných intoxikacích. Může se uplatnit i k sedaci benzodiazepiny při vědomí. Výhodný je jeho účinek antiarytmický a antifibrilační. V experimentech napodobuje ischemický preconditioning. Přispěl k bližšímu objasnění některých psychických funkcí mozku, jako jsou paměť nebo emoce.

Flumazenil, a specific benzodiazepine antagonist, was synthesized by Hunkeler in 1979. The first clinical trial of flumazenil was conducted in April 1981 in Zurich. As it is costly, flumazenil has not been widely used and is prescribed primarily in combined intoxications. It can be considered in the reversal of conscious sedation. It also has antiarrhythmic and antifibrillation effects. In experiments, flumazenil mimics ischemic preconditioning. It has contributed to a better understanding of mental brain functions such as memory and emotions.
