Nykturie jako nozologická jednotka má široké spektrum příčin přesahujících urologickou oblast. Hlavními příčinami je polyurie, noční polyurie a poruchy jímací nebo evakuační funkce močového měchýře. Jednotlivé příčiny je třeba od sebe pečlivě v rámci diagnostiky rozlišit, jelikož i léčba nykturie je odlišná dle jednotlivých příčin. Primárně by mělo být využito metod neinvazivní diagnostiky s využitím anamnézy, dotazníků, pitného a mikčního deníku, uroflowmetrie a postmikčního reziduálního profilu. Pokud nelze na základě těchto metod přesně určit příčinu nykturie nebo nykturie nereaguje na stanovenou léčbu, je nutné přistoupit k invazivnímu vyšetření. Léčba nykturie vychází z diagnostikované příčiny a u jednotlivých příčin nykturie se diametrálně liší, i když jednotlivé léčebné modality lze i kombinovat.
