[Gonorrhoea - a brief reminder of a topical issue]

Gonorrhoea is a classical sexually transmitted disease that has been known, without exaggeration, for millennia. Nevertheless, the current lax attitude of both the general public and professionals to the disease is alarming. Decrease in the annual incidence of gonorrhoea seems to be a result of reluctance on the part of physicians to accept the importance of the monitoring for the prevention of infection, leading to significant underreporting. Again, the spread of resistant and multidrug resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoae in the world and in Europe makes it the centre of attention to both microbiologists and clinicians in the face of antibiotic therapy failure.
