There is a persistent variation in cancer outcomes among and within European countries suggesting (among other causes) inequalities in access to or delivery of high-quality cancer care. European policy (EU Cancer Mission and Europe's Beating Cancer Plan) is currently moving towards a mission-oriented approach addressing these inequalities. In this study, we used the quantitative and qualitative data of the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes' Accreditation and Designation Programme, relating to 40 large European cancer centres, to describe their current compliance with quality standards, to identify the hallmarks common to all centres and to show the distinctive features of Comprehensive Cancer Centres. All Comprehensive Cancer Centres and Cancer Centres accredited by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes show good compliance with quality standards related to care, multidisciplinarity and patient centredness. However, Comprehensive Cancer Centres on average showed significantly better scores on indicators related to the volume, quality and integration of translational research, such as high-impact publications, clinical trial activity (especially in phase I and phase IIa trials) and filing more patents as early indicators of innovation. However, irrespective of their size, centres show significant variability regarding effective governance when functioning as entities within larger hospitals.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine perceptions of individualized care by nurses and patients, to determine relationships between demographic characteristics and perceptions of individualized care, and to compare the differences between nurses and patients. Methods: A descriptive correlation study. The research sample consisted of a group of 185 nurses and 279 patients surgical departments of four hospitals in Ostrava and its surroundings. Data were collected in fall 2009 using standardized instrument ICS with two versions for nurses and patients (Suhonen et al., 2005). Results: Measuring instrument with three subscales were used simultaneously for nurses (nurse-ICS) and patients (ICS-patient), evaluation was done using the Likert scale (1-5). Patients perceived that nurses are generally supporting their individuality during nursing care. Nurses assessed the perceptions of individualized care in all areas by higher average score than patients (p < 0.01). The most neglected areas in both groups was the patient´ personal life situation. Strong influence of demographic characteristics of patients and nurses in their perceptions of individualized care was not proven. Guest perceptions of individualized care were more positive in patients with shorter hospital stay and patients who were admitted to the hospital as planned. There were no significant differences in perception of individuality and individualized care among hospitals. Conclusion: The results of this study showed differences in the perception of individuality and the patient's individualized care between nurses and patients. ICS is a useful tool for assessing perceptions of individualized nursing care in the Czech environment.

Realizace ošetřovatelského procesu v ČR není zcela zmapovaná. Předkládaný programový projekt bude podkladem pro zhodnocení situace, týkající se ošetřovatelského procesu po stránce kvality i kvantity. Navrhovaný projekt bude sledovat úroveň ošetřovatelsképéče v jednotlivých zdravotnických zařízeních, kde ošetřovatelský proces probíhá. Budou se hledat důvody bránící zavedení ošetřovatelského procesu ve zdravotnických zařízeních. Konečným výstupem projektu bude zhotovení publikace, která problematiku ošetřovatelského procesu v ČR zhodnotí a uvede vypracovaný standard ošetřovatelské péče.; The implementation of nursing process in the Czech Republic is not mapped out in its entirety. The supposed program project will be the base for evaluation of the situation concerning nursing process with regard to quality and quantity. The proposed project will follow the level of nursing care in the individual health care institutions where nursing process is in course. Reasons hindering the implementation of nursing process in health care institutions will be detected. The final output of the projectwill be a publication that will evaluate the problems of nursing process in the Czech Republic and set up the standard of nursing care.
