Vibrio vulnificus is a human pathogen which can cause the septicemia and necrosis of the soft tissue, especially fasciitis. The occurrence is most common in the summer, the source of infection can be sea water or the sand on the beaches, however the infection after eating seafood was described as well. The patient with predominant liver dysfunction are more often affected. The clinical course is characterized by severe sepsis, and massive skin lesion. The mortality more than 60% is reported. This case report describes the course of disease in 64 year old patient, who has spent his vacation in Bulgaria. After return he was admitted with severe sepsis with multiorgan failure and despite the intensive therapy and high amputation of the limb which was performed, the patient died.

The frequency of vibriosis in cultured rainbow trout, maintained under different rearing conditions in the Krka estuary, was examined over a 6 yr period. Annual studies commenced regularly in October and ended in June of the following year. Every month during study periods, 37-75 trouts were randomly taken from each of 4 farm sites for routine examination. Twenty fish from these samples were subsequently employed for bacteriological analyses. Based on morphological and biochemical properties, the bacterial isolates were identified as Vibrio anguillarum, (biotype I). The findings demonstrate high occurrence of vibriosis in trout cultivated in the Krka estuary. Furthermore, there was a direct relationship between water quality parameters and the severity of vibriosis epizootics. Moreover, the causative agent has been isolated from free-living species, fish, notably eel and mullet, which are abundant to the Krka aquatorium. The findings from these long-term studies will be considered with reference to the developing salmon farming industry of Croatia.

Seashore water samples collected along the coastline in Bulgaria and Rumania contained in large numbers OK serovars of V. parahaemolyticus; some of these had been isolated repeatedly over an extended time period: 01 K32, 03 K30, 03 K48, 04 K37, 04 K53, 05 K17, 05 K30. The serovar 05 K17 was virtually present in all water samples and was also isolated from a case of purulent ear infection in a child from Burgas. In contrast, strains recovered from Asian and African coastal water had different K antigens and were never identified in Europe. Two strains of V. parahaemolyticus (serovars 05 K15 and 07 K10) had positive swarming growth resembling that of V. alginolyticus. The first of these was Kanagawa-positive and was isolated from a case of severe diarrhea in Brazzaville. Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates came from marine or brackish water specimens collected on sand banks, 3 strains were recovered from marine or brackish water in Africa. Vibrio harveyi, a sucrose-negative species important from differential diagnostic aspects, has been isolated from seashore water samples collected on coarse-sand or pebbly beaches.

Various serological methods were used to study 630 blood sera of patients with diarrhoea on whom microorganisms of the genera Vibrio (vibrios of non-01 group, phosphorescent, parahaemolytic and alginolytic vibrios) and Aeromonas were isolated, and also of patients with unconfirmed bacteriological diagnosis, carriers and healthy persons. It has been established that specific antibodies are isolated in 30-50% of cases, most frequently in the agglutination reaction, in PHAR with flagellar erythrocyte diagnostic agent, in the reaction of vibriocidal antibodies using the Takachi apparatus. Serological diagnosis is a subsidiary method promoting the performance of clinico-epidemiological analysis of diseases with diarrhoea.

The objective of the study was to test the suitability of lavages of artificial vaginas which are used for collecting ejaculate for diagnosing the Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus germs. According to the results of the investigation this method may be considered equal to the method of lavages of the prepuce. However, it is important to point out the advantages: it eliminates the danger of an accident, it enables quality lavage in the laboratory. To caputure the Campylobacter fetus the filtration through diaphragm filters is used together with the culture medium Fluid Thioglycollate medium (Difco) with an additive of agar, 10% ram blood and antibiotics (bacitracin, novobiocin). The catch rate in the prepuce lavages is 26.9%, in lavages of the artificial vagina 26.1%. The insignificant difference between the errors of the methods, i.e. the number of negative findings by employing one method and positive results with the other method, is 24.4% in lavages of the artificial vagina and 22.0% in lavages of the prepuce.
