The authors describe a fatal case of tertian malaria (Plasmodium vivax) imported to the Czech Republic from India. Severe clinical symptoms leading to shock and multi-organ failure are more frequent in tropical malaria (P. falciparum). Despite the use oc continuous veno-venous haemodiafiltration HLA-DR decline and death occurred. The effect of the administered antimalarias drugs was good.

The authors present a rare case of a 46-year-old man with Creutzfeldt-Jacob's disease, its causal agent being an unconventional virus (prion). Ocular symptoms were the first which made the patient see a doctor. The course of the disease with a fatal outcome caused great diagnostic difficulties among a number of specialists.

A graphic method was worked out for representing the statistical processed results of the determination of blood pH, pCO2, and base excess in a group of animals subjected to a metabolic test. The method is based on the determination of a selective mean and 95% confidence interval of the selective mean of the above-mentioned parameters in a group of animals; these mean values and confidence intervals are then plotted in a compensation graph. The area delimited in the graph by the upper and lower limits of the 95% confidence intervals of the selective means includes the mean values of the basic population with the probability of 94.7375%. The position of the plotted individual acid-base balance values of 422 animals, compared with the 60 areas delimited by the 95% confidence intervals of the selective means for the groups of animals, showed a very good correspondence in 91.23% of cases and partial correspondence in 8.74% of cases.

A graphical method was developed for the statistical evaluation of the results of metabolic tests; this method affords evaluation with due respect to the variance of characters in selected sets and the size of the tested group of animals. In principle, the method is based on the determination of the arithmetical mean and a 95% confidence interval of the selective mean of the values for each parameter of biochemism in each group of animals; these values are then expressed as per cent with regard to a mean reference value. Graphical comparison is enabled for both score and interval estimation of the distribution of a character in the studied group of animals, with a reference interval and reference mean.

The objective of the study was to test the suitability of lavages of artificial vaginas which are used for collecting ejaculate for diagnosing the Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus germs. According to the results of the investigation this method may be considered equal to the method of lavages of the prepuce. However, it is important to point out the advantages: it eliminates the danger of an accident, it enables quality lavage in the laboratory. To caputure the Campylobacter fetus the filtration through diaphragm filters is used together with the culture medium Fluid Thioglycollate medium (Difco) with an additive of agar, 10% ram blood and antibiotics (bacitracin, novobiocin). The catch rate in the prepuce lavages is 26.9%, in lavages of the artificial vagina 26.1%. The insignificant difference between the errors of the methods, i.e. the number of negative findings by employing one method and positive results with the other method, is 24.4% in lavages of the artificial vagina and 22.0% in lavages of the prepuce.

A cytological and bacteriological examination of uterine lavages of 264 cows from herds with fertility disorders (without convincing pathological findings) helped to determine the clinical diagnosis in a more exact way. In 41.67% of the cases, mucosal metritis was cytologically proved. Bacterial contamination of the urerine medium was observed in 83.71% of the cases. The result of bacteriological examinations of uterine lavage and cervical smear brought about various findings in 77.27% of the cases. The bacteriological contamination rate of the uterine medium without metritis was highest in the follicular phase. Both the cows suffering from metritis and in cows without any changes due to metritis, common, conditionally pathogenic microflora was found (with the exception of several cases) the etiocausal effect of which on the metritis origin and decreased fertility could not be, in general and for certain, proved.

By means of the Astrup equilibration method the values of the acid-base balance of the blood were determined in 104 cows, 99 horses, 100 pigs, 15 sheep, 20 goats, and in 101 dogs. The pH values of the blood, the partial pressure of CO2, the base excess, the base buffer, the standard bicarbonate, the actual bicarbonate, and the total CO2 were processed statistically and are presented in tables.
