At present, demographic changes result in the growing number of older people. This trend inevitably brings about serious social and economic issues, as well as occurrence of aging diseases. The purpose of this study is to discuss the potential of using mobile technologies and applications in the detection of aging disorders such as mild cognitive impairment. The methods used for this review study include a literature search in the world's acknowledged databases. The findings of this study indicate that mobile applications can serve as appropriate diagnostic tools for aging disorders such as mild cognitive impairment because they seem to provide better, faster, and less costly care for older people.

At present mental disorders affect approximately 450 million people around the world. Depressive disorder is probably one of the most serious disorders and as a type of chronic disease, it represents a global threat and burdens economic and social systems of both individuals and governments worldwide. One of these most recent non-pharmacological approaches is also the so-called mHealth (mobile health), the use of mobile devices for the practice of medicine and public health, which proves to be effective particularly in the early stages of depression. The purpose of this article is to explore the most recent randomized controlled trial studies which indicate efficacy of the use of mobile applications in the detection, diagnostics or treatment of depression. The methods used in this study include a method of literature search of the studies focused on the impacts of individual applications for people with depression and on the specification of criteria evaluating quality of these applications. The findings of the randomized controlled trials (RCT) show that there is a big potential of mobile applications in the detection, diagnostics, and treatment of depression, particularly in mild and moderate stages of the disease. They seem to be especially relevant for self-monitoring of depressive symptoms in the early stages of depression. There is an urgent need of more longitudinal RCT in this field in order to prove conclusive efficacy of these mobile applications in the treatment of depression. The authors list the main strengths and weaknesses of mobile applications in the detection, diagnostics, and treatment of depression.Key words: mobile applications depression treatment.

Individual physiotherapy is crucial in treating patients with various pain and health issues, and significantly impacts abdominal surgical outcomes and further medical problems. Recent technological and artificial intelligent advancements have equipped healthcare professionals with innovative tools, such as sensor systems and telemedicine equipment, offering groundbreaking opportunities to monitor and analyze patients' physical activity. This paper investigates the potential applications of mobile accelerometers in evaluating the symmetry of specific rehabilitation exercises using a dataset of 1280 tests on 16 individuals in the age range between 8 and 75 years. A comprehensive computational methodology is introduced, incorporating traditional digital signal processing, feature extraction in both time and transform domains, and advanced classification techniques. The study employs a range of machine learning methods, including support vector machines, Bayesian analysis, and neural networks, to evaluate the balance of various physical activities. The proposed approach achieved a high classification accuracy of 90.6% in distinguishing between left- and right-side motion patterns by employing features from both the time and frequency domains using a two-layer neural network. These findings demonstrate promising applications of precise monitoring of rehabilitation exercises to increase the probability of successful surgical recovery, highlighting the potential to significantly enhance patient care and treatment outcomes.

At present, there is a rapid increase in the number of older population. These demographic changes obviously bring about a number of economic and social issues, which are, for instance, reflected in a rising number of aging diseases, such as dementia, characterized by cognitive impairment. Since there is no effective pharmacological treatment, country's governments are looking for policies and strategies, which would delay the aging process, and thus prolong an active life of aging population. One of these policies appears to be the use of technologies, respectively mobile applications, by elderly people. The purpose of this article is to discuss the use of mobile applications in learning foreign languages, such as English, by elderly people, as well as their benefits. Overall, mobile apps for learning a foreign language appear to be one of the tools which can promote well-being of older people. The results reveal there are many benefits of learning a foreign language by seniors. These include, for example, improvement of their cognitive performance, positive impact on their psyche, reduction of anxiety, gaining self-confidence, development of new social ties and feeling of self-realization, as well as learning of a new foreign language. However, research in this area is very scare, which is due to the lack of such apps for the elderly and consequently, due to the lack of the experimental studies in this field.

Smart mobile phone use is increasing worldwide, as is the ability of mobile devices to monitor daily routines, behaviors, and even cognitive changes. There is a growing opportunity for users to share the data collected with their medical providers which may serve as an accessible cognitive impairment screening tool. Data logged or tracked in an app and analyzed with machine learning (ML) could identify subtle cognitive changes and lead to more timely diagnoses on an individual and population level. This review comments on existing evidence of mobile device applications designed to passively and/or actively collect data on cognition relevant for early detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The PubMed database was searched to identify existing literature on apps related to dementia and cognitive health data collection. The initial search deadline was December 1, 2022. Additional literature published in 2023 was accounted for with a follow-up search prior to publication. Criteria for inclusion was limited to articles in English which referenced data collection via mobile app from adults 50+ concerned, at risk of, or diagnosed with AD dementia. We identified relevant literature (n = 25) which fit our criteria. Many publications were excluded because they focused on apps which fail to collect data and simply provide users with cognitive health information. We found that although data collecting cognition-related apps have existed for years, the use of these apps as screening tools remains underdeveloped; however, it may serve as proof of concept and feasibility as there is much supporting evidence on their predictive utility. Concerns about the validity of mobile apps for cognitive screening and privacy issues remain prevalent. Mobile applications and use of ML is widely considered a financially and socially viable method of compiling symptomatic data but currently this large potential dataset, screening tool, and research resource is still largely untapped.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) is increasingly being used in contemporary health care provision owing to its portability, accessibility, ability to facilitate communication, improved interprofessional collaboration, and benefits for health outcomes. However, there is limited discourse on patient safety in real-world mHealth implementation, especially as care settings extend beyond traditional center-based technology usage to home-based care. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore health care professionals' perspectives on the safety aspects of mHealth integration in real-world service provision, focusing on Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and Wuhan city in mainland China. In Hong Kong SAR, real-world mHealth care provision is largely managed by the Hospital Authority, which has released various mobile apps for home-based care, such as Stoma Care, Hip Fracture, and HA Go. In contrast, mHealth care provision in Wuhan is institutionally directed, with individual hospitals or departments using consultation apps, WeChat mini-programs, and the WeChat Official Accounts Platform (a subapp within the WeChat ecosystem). METHODS: A multicenter qualitative study design was used. A total of 27 participants, including 22 nurses and 5 physicians, from 2 different health care systems were interviewed individually. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 32.19 (SD 3.74) years, and the mean working experience was 8.04 (SD 4.05) years. Most participants were female (20/27, 74%). Nearly half of the participants had a bachelor's degree (13/27, 48%), some had a master's degree (9/27, 33%), and few had a diploma degree (3/27, 11%) or a doctoral degree (2/27, 7%). Four themes emerged from the data analysis. Considering the current uncertainties surrounding mHealth implementation, participants emphasized "liability" concerns when discussing patient safety. They emphasized the need for "change management," which includes appropriate referral processes, adequate resources and funding, informed mHealth usage, and efficient working processes. They cautioned about the risks in providing mHealth information without ensuring understanding, appreciated the current regulations available, and identified additional regulations that should be considered to ensure information security. CONCLUSIONS: As health care systems increasingly adopt mHealth solutions globally to enhance both patient care and operational efficiency, it becomes crucial to understand the implications for patient safety in these new care models. Health care professionals recognized the importance of patient safety in making mHealth usage reliable and sustainable. The promotion of mHealth should be accompanied by the standardization of mHealth services with institutional, health care system, and policy-level support. This includes fostering mHealth acceptance among health care professionals to encourage appropriate referrals, accommodate changes, ensure patient comprehension, and proactively identify and address threats to information security.

Nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) affects our lives every single day and brings with it both benefits and risks for all spheres of human activities, including education. Out of these risks, the most striking seems to be ethical issues of the use of AI, such as misuse of private data or surveillance of people's lives. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is to describe the key ethical issues related to the use of AI-driven mobile apps in education, as well as to list some of the implications based on the identified studies associated with this research topic. The methodology of this review study was based on the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The results indicate four key ethical principles that should be followed, out of which the principle of algorithmovigilance should be considered in order to monitor, understand and prevent the adverse effects of algorithms in the use of AI in education. Furthermore, all stakeholders should be identified, as well as their joint engagement and collaboration to guarantee the ethical use of AI in education. Thus, the contribution of this study consists in emphasizing the need for joint cooperation and research of all stakeholders when using AI-driven mobile technologies in education with special attention to the ethical issues since the present research based on the review studies is scarce and neglected in this respect.

OBJECTIVES: There are many mobile health applications (apps) now available and some that use in some way laboratory medicine data. Among them, patient-oriented are of the lowest content quality. The aim of this study was to compare the opinions of non-laboratory medicine professionals (NLMP) with those of laboratory medicine specialists (LMS) and define the benchmarks for quality assessment of laboratory medicine apps. METHODS: Twenty-five volunteers from six European countries evaluated 16 selected patient-oriented apps. Participants were 20-60 years old, 44% were females, with different educational degrees, and no professional involvement in laboratory medicine. Each participant completed a questionnaire based on the Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS) and the System Usability Scale, as previously used for rating the app quality by LMS. The responses from the two groups were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman correlation. RESULTS: The median total score of NLMP app evaluation was 2.73 out of 5 (IQR 0.95) compared to 3.78 (IQR 1.05) by the LMS. All scores were statistically significantly lower in the NLMP group (p<0.05), except for the item Information quality (p=0.1631). The suggested benchmarks for a useful appear: increasing awareness of the importance and delivering an understanding of persons' own laboratory test results; understandable terminology; easy to use; appropriate graphic design, and trustworthy information. CONCLUSIONS: NLMP' evaluation confirmed the low utility of currently available laboratory medicine apps. A reliable app should contain trustworthy and understandable information. The appearance of an app should be fit for purpose and easy to use.

Citizen science and data collected from various volunteers have an interesting potential in aiding the understanding of many biological and ecological processes. We describe a mobile application that allows the public to map and report occurrences of the odonata species (dragonflies and damselflies) found in the Czech Republic. The application also helps in species classification based on observation details such as date, GPS coordinates, and the altitude, biotope, suborder, and colour. Dragonfly Hunter CZ is a free Android application built on the open-source framework NativeScript using the JavaScript programming language which is now fully available on Google Play. The server side is powered by Apache Server with PHP and MariaDB SQL database. A mobile application is a fast and accurate way to obtain data pertaining to the odonata species, which can be used after expert verification for ecological studies and conservation basis like Red Lists and policy instruments. We expect it to be effective in encouraging Citizen Science and in promoting the proactive reporting of odonates. It can also be extended to the reporting and monitoring of other plant and animal species.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacotherapy remains one of the major interventional strategies in medicine. However, patients from all age groups and conditions face challenges when taking medications, such as integrating them into the daily routine, understanding their effects and side effects, and monitoring outcomes. In this context, a reliable medication management tool adaptable to the patient's needs becomes critical. As most people have a mobile phone, mobile apps offer a platform for such a personalized support tool available on the go. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide an overview of available mobile apps, focusing on those that help patients understand and take their medications. We reviewed the existing apps and provided suggestions for future development based on the concept understand and manage, instead of the conventional adhere to medication. This concept aims to engage and empower patients to be in charge of their health, as well as see medication as part of a broader clinical approach, working simultaneously with other types of interventions or lifestyle changes, to achieve optimal outcomes. METHODS: We performed a Web search in the iOS Apple App Store and Android Google Play Store, using 4 search terms: medication management, pill reminder, medication health monitor, and medication helper. We extracted information from the app store descriptions for each eligible app and categorized into the following characteristics: features, author affiliation, specialty, user interface, cost, and user rating. In addition, we conducted Google searches to obtain more information about the author affiliation. RESULTS: A total of 328 apps (175 Android and 153 iOS) were categorized. The majority of the apps were developed by the software industry (73%, 11/15), a minority of them were codeveloped by health care professionals (15%, 3/20) or academia (2.1%; 7/328). The most prevalent specialty was diabetes (23 apps). Only 7 apps focused on mental health, but their content was highly comprehensive in terms of features and had the highest prevalence of the education component. The most prevalent features were reminder, symptom tracker, and ability to share data with a family member or doctor. In addition, we highlighted the features considered innovative and listed practical suggestions for future development and innovations. CONCLUSIONS: We identified detailed characteristics of the existing apps, with the aim of informing future app development. Ultimately, the goal was to provide users with effective mobile health solutions, which can be expected to improve their engagement in the treatment process and long-term well-being. This study also highlighted the need for improved standards for reporting on app stores. Furthermore, it underlined the need for a platform to offer health app users an ongoing evaluation of apps by health professionals in addition to other users and to provide them with tools to easily select an appropriate and trustworthy app.
