GOAL: To make the reader familiar with the term evidence based medicine (EBM), to explain the principle of cost-effectiveness analysis (price-profit), and to show its usefulness to compare the effectiveness of different medical procedures. METHOD: Based on few examples, in this article the relevance and calculation of important parameters of cost-effectiveness analysis (CE), as utility value (UV), quality adjusted life years (QALY) is explained. In addition, calculation of UV and QALY for the cataract surgery, including its complications, is provided. RESULTS: According to this method, laser photocoagulation and cryocoagulation of the early stages of retinopathy of prematurity, treatment of amblyopia, cataract surgery of one or both eyes, from the vitreoretinal procedures the early vitrectomy in cases of hemophtalmus in proliferative diabetic retinopathy or grid laser photocoagulation in diabetic macular edema or worsening of the visual acuity due to the branch retinal vein occlusion belong to highly effective procedures. On the other hand, to the procedures with low cost effectiveness belongs the treating of the central retinal artery occlusion with anterior chamber paracentesis, as well as with CO2 inhalation, or photodynamic therapy in choroidal neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration with visual acuity of the better eye 20/200. CONCLUSION: Cost-effectiveness analysis is a new perspective method evaluating successfulness of medical procedure comparing the final effect with the financial costs. In evaluation of effectiveness of individual procedures, three main aspects are considered: subjective feeling of influence of the disease on the patient's life, objective results of clinical examination and financial costs of the procedure. According to this method, the cataract surgery, as well as procedures in the pediatric ophthalmology belong to the most effective surgical methods.

The establishment of the first JBI Affiliated group in Poland at Wroclaw Medical University marks a significant advancement in evidence-based healthcare (EBHC) nationally. This editorial explores the evolution of EBHC and the critical role of JBI in driving its progress. Founded in 1996 as a research institute at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in South Australia and now based at the University of Adelaide, JBI has emerged as an international leader in evidence synthesis, transfer and implementation. Its Feasibility, Appropriateness, Meaningfulness, and Effectiveness (FAME) framework highlights the feasibility, appropriateness, meaningfulness, and effectiveness of healthcare practices, ensuring that decisions are patient-centered and contextually relevant. JBI's global collaboration network encompasses over 85 entities, with 23 located in Europe, emphasizing the importance of cultural inclusivity and international partnerships. Recent initiatives include translating the JBI Model of into Polish, German and Czech, linking global knowledge to local contexts, and enhancing understanding for professionals and students alike. This editorial also underscores the collaborative achievements of JBI entities in Wroclaw, Brandenburg an der Havel, Prague, and Olomouc. These partnerships have propelled regional implementation, research and education, fostering a shared vision for elevating healthcare quality. Launching a new EBHC section in the Advances in Clinical and Experimental Medicine journal is a significant step forward, inviting global contributions and stimulating innovation and knowledge sharing in EBHC. The presence of a JBI Affiliated group at Wroclaw Medical University symbolizes a transformative commitment to excellence and collaboration. It sets new benchmarks for healthcare in Poland and beyond while reinforcing the global mission of evidence-based practice.

BACKGROUND: Consensus on evidence-based practice (EBP) competencies and associated learning outcomes for registered nurses has not yet been achieved in the European context. AIMS: To establish a set of core EBP competencies for nurses and the most important EBP learning outcomes encompassing attitudes, knowledge, and skills dimensions for implementation into nursing education in European countries. METHODS: A multi-phase modified Delphi survey was conducted: Phase 1, a literature review; Phase 2, a two-round consensus of experts; and Phase 3, a Delphi survey. Experts from six European countries participated. RESULTS: In Phase 1, 88 records were selected and 835 statements extracted, which were grouped according to the seven steps of EBP. After removing 157 duplicates, the remaining competencies (n = 678) were evaluated in Phase 2. Then, a two-round expert consensus was reached, with 24 competencies and 120 learning outcomes identified and divided into affective, cognitive, and skills domains. In Phase 3, based on a Delphi survey expert consensus, all evaluated statements were included in a final set of competencies and learning outcomes. Only two learning outcomes were recommended for allocation to a different domain, and four were reformulated as suggested, with no further changes to the others. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: The set of EBP competencies and learning outcomes can guide nurse educators, managers, and EBP stakeholders in the development of content that incorporates EBP knowledge, skills, and attitudes into educational programs. Prioritizing the EBP competencies and learning outcomes that are most necessary and adapting them to every context will provide healthcare organizations with guidelines for enhancing the continuing education of nurses. These results could facilitate the development of effective tools for assessing nursing students' and nurses' perception of competencies required for EBP processes.

BACKGROUND: The field of study Teaching of Vocational Subjects for Nursing Schools, the completion of which contributes to obtaining a teaching qualification at the master's level, is amongst the most prestigious fields at the Faculty of Education, Palacký University Olomouc. In the academic year of 2018/2019, the students of this field are involved in the pilot project introducing and teaching Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) methods. The concept is based on the experience of The Czech Republic (Central European) Centre for Evidence-Based Healthcare: A Joanna Briggs Institute Centre of Excellence team. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this short communication are, first, to provide information about the pilot project and the implementation of EBP methodology into selected subjects at the Faculty of Education, and second, to provide information regarding the establishment of a working group for the foundation of the Centre for Evidence-Based Education. METHODS: To implement the EBP method into the training of healthcare professionals, four syllabi of the currently taught subjects were updated and improved to include this methodology, and a brand new subject was created with the title 'Evidence-Based Education and Healthcare'. The faculty received approval from the National Accreditation Bureau for Higher Education and in September 2018, teaching of EBP topics was launched for a group of 95 full-time and part-time students. The academic year of 2019/2020 will see the introduction of the new subject 'Evidence-Based Education and Healthcare'. RESULTS: The outcomes of the project include an adjusted content of the subjects 'Scientific Components in the Health Education Curriculum' and the 'Diploma Thesis Seminar', the new subject titled 'Evidence-Based Education and Healthcare', and the strategic plan for the Conception and establishment of the Joanna Briggs Institute affiliate Evidence-Based Education Centre. CONCLUSION: It is appropriate to implement comprehensive EBP modules, with several subjects within the study curriculum. Current activities are the preparatory, motivational phase of potential development.

BACKGROUND: The Evidence-Based Practice Beliefs (EBP-B) and Evidence-Based Practice Implementation (EBP-I) scales are psychometrically sound instruments that were used, within an educational setting, to systematically study students' beliefs about and their implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP). Czech and Slovak versions of these instruments were developed and evaluated using a sample population of nursing students. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to test the psychometric properties of the Czech and Slovak versions of the EBP-B and EBP-I scales. METHODS: Psychometric properties were evaluated using a sample of undergraduate and graduate (nearly graduated) nursing students (n = 223) completing EBP courses. To test psychometric properties of the questionnaire, its reliability and validity were explored. Cronbach´s alpha was computed to evaluate internal structure and internal consistency. RESULTS: The Slovak versions of both the EBP-B and the EBP-I scale have good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: .82 and .94, respectively). Similarly, the Czech versions of the EBP-B and the EBP-I scales both have good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: .85 and .89, respectively). LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: The results of psychometric analysis of the Czech and Slovak versions of the EBP-B and the EBP-I scales are consistent with the results of the original study and indicate that the Czech and Slovak versions have the potential to be valid, reliable, and sensitive instruments for measuring an individual's beliefs about the value of EBP and their ability to implement it. Both instruments can be used to assess changes in nurses´ beliefs about EBP over time as well as the effectiveness of strategies aimed at promoting the use of evidence in practice.

The number of exotic companion pet rodents seen in veterinary practices is growing very rapidly. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association's surveys, more than 2,093,000 pet rodents were kept in US households in 2007 and in 2012 it was more than 2,349,000 animals. This article summarizes the most important evidence-based knowledge in exotic pet rodents (diagnostics of the hyperadrenocorticism in guinea pigs, pituitary tumors in rats, urolithiasis in guinea pigs, use of itopride as prokinetics, use of deslorelin acetate in rodents, cause of dental disease, and prevention of mammary gland tumors in rats).

Background: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the appropriate approach to guide healthcare personnel in their clinical practice. Despite the importance of EBP, undergraduate nursing students are not very much engaged and have a lack of knowledge and skills. Aim: The aim of this study was to gather, assess and synthesize evidence on educational interventions promoting evidence-based practice competencies in traditional undergraduate nursing students. Methods: This is a scoping review on sixteen English and non-English databases. A data extraction form was established including authors, year of publication, country, types of participant, specific objectives, study design, educational intervention, comparison if existed, and outcomes of significance. Results: The search strategy retrieved 8901 records in total. After screening for duplicates and eligibility, 20 articles were included in the qualitative synthesis. Improvement in EBP domains such as knowledge, skills, attitudes/behaviours, EBP beliefs, use, practice, level of evidence, critical thinking and future use of EBP were mentioned and assessed in different studies. Conclusions: EBP training can improve nursing students' capacity in healthcare provision. Teaching EBP competencies along undergraduate nursing curricula should be a high priority at nursing programmes. The use of innovative approaches seems to be more effective than traditional ways. Education of EBP increases its future use and critical thinking and EBP programs improve self-efficacy and the level of evidence utilization.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based nursing practice (EBNP) has been regarded core competencies in nursing practice and education. Defining evidence-based nursing practice and translating evidence into nursing practice by nursing students who are green to clinical practice in their education journey remain unclear. AIM: To explore how pre-registered nursing students define and characterize evidence-based nursing practice as they participate in their clinical practicum. DESIGN: This study used an interpretive phenomenological qualitative study design. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: Twenty nursing students were interviewed for their clinical practicum experience from four universities, one nursing college and one hospital-based nursing school in Hong Kong. METHODS: Data was generated through semi-structured in-depth interview and analyzed following interpretative phenomenological analysis guidelines, using a cyclical coding process. RESULTS: Four themes emerged regarding nursing students' definition of EBNP, highlighting that EBNP is 'identifying a reliable learning source', by which they can 'rationalize their nursing practice', and enabling them to 'establish care standard through critical thinking', and eventual 'fostering their professionalism' to improve health outcomes and reduce potential harms. CONCLUSION: Nursing students defined and characterized evidence-based nursing practice as core competencies in accompany their practicum that enables them to learn and grow professionally with a universal desire to be qualified, cope with doubt, and improve patient outcome. They recognized the challenges in identifying evidence and emphasized conservative approach to validate the evidence to avoid patient harm. Students expressed doubt towards their instructors EBNP when observing procedures untaught at school, which requires the curriculum model to foster students' skills in applying and appraising evidence and instructors' capacity to rationalize and role model EBNP.
