Liečba diabetickej retinopatie (DR) a diabetického edému makuly (DEM) vychádza z nových poznatkov v etiopa- togenéze ochorenia. Liečba DR a DEM má dve úrovne: 1. dobrá kontrola glykémie, čo potvrdili svojimi závermi kli- nické štúdie Wisconsin Epidemiologic Study of Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, Di- abetes Intervention and Complications Study a United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, 2. vlastná liečba DEM a DR, ktorá môže byť laserová, intravitreálna farmakologická alebo chirurgická. Klinické štúdie ETDRS, DRS, DRCR.net, RESTORE, RESOLVE, READ 1, READ 2, Macugen Diabetic Retinopathy Study Group a Da Vinci dokázali, že centrálna zraková ostrosť sa liečbou DR a DEM laserkoaguláciou stabilizuje, pri intravitreálnej liečbe sa môže až u 50 % pa- cientov výrazne zlepšiť.

Treatment of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema is based on the new knowledge in the pathogene- sis of the disease. Treatment of DR and DEM has two levels: 1st level: good glycaemic control, which was confi rmed by conclusions of clinical trials: Wisconsin Epidemiologic Study of Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetes Control and Com- plications Trial, Diabetes Intervention and Complications Study and United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, 2nd level: treatment of DR and DEM: lasercoagulation, in travitreal pharmacological therapy or surgical therapy. Clinical studies ETDRS, DRS, DRCR.net, RESTORE, RESOLVE, READ 1, READ 2, Macugen Diabetic Retinopathy Study Group and Da Vinci showed that visual acuity on treated eyes with lasercoagulation of DEM and DR stabilizes, in the intravitreal treatment in 50 % of patients can be signifi cantly improved.
