V první polovině 20. století se na rozvoji české, resp. československé dermatovenerologie podepsaly první a později i druhá světová válka. V tomto období, po vzniku první republiky, došlo ke změnám ve statutu pražské Karlo-Ferdinandovy univerzity, která byla rozdělena. Německá část dala vznik samostatné univerzitě, takže v Praze byly univerzity dvě, Karlova univerzita – pokračovatelka starobylého učení Karlova a Německá univerzita. Současně v roce 1919 vzniká Univerzita v Brně a Bratislavě. I v budování českých klinik na „nové“ Karlově univerzitě bylo nutné provést radikální změny. Těch se ujali noví, na Šambergerově klinice vyrůstající, odborníci profesoři Gawalowski a Hübschmann. Oba neúnavně budovali kožní oddělení a kliniky v rámci univerzity i Prahy. I přes 2. světovou válku se jim podařilo za pomoci dalších významných dermatologů udržet jak činnost dermatovenerologických oddělení, tak např. i časopis Česká dermatovenerologie, který bez přerušení vycházel, i když s omezením, po celou dobu války.
During the first half of the 20th century the First and the Second World War subsequently influenced the development of the Czech and Slovak dermatology. In this period, after formation of The First Czechoslovak Republic, the Prague Charles-Ferdinand University changed its statute and was divided. The German part gave rise to the independent university, thus there were two universities in Prague; Charles University – continuator of the ancient university of Charles and German university. At the same time, the universities in Brno and Bratislava were founded in the 1919. The building-up of Czech departments at the „new“ Charles University called for radical changes. New professors Gawalowski and Hübschman, brought up at the Šamberger’s clinic, took charge of them. Both of them built up dermatological departments and clinics at university and in Prague, tirelessly. Despite the Second World War the activity of both dermatovenereological departments was preserved with help of other notable dermatologists and the journal Czech dermatovenereology continued to be published, even if restricted, without interruption during all the war.
