Aim: The aim of the research was to verify previous foreign research findings about relationship between emotional intelligence and burn-out syndrome in the sample of Slovak nurses. Concurrently we explore the level of burn-out syndrome prevalence in the sample of Slovak nurses. Method: Research sample consisted of 62 nurses from The Department of Trauma Surgery. Questionnaire method for collecting data was used. The Maslach Burn-out Inventory was used as the level of burn-out syndrome measure and The Schutte Self-report Emotional Intelligence Test was used as the emotional intelligence measure. Results: We found negative relationship between the level of emotional intelligence and burn-out syndrome prevalence, and the stronger association of emotional intelligence was found to depersonalisation and personal accomplishment as burn-out syndrome factors. Concurrently we found that one third of nurses were threaded by the burn-out syndrome in our sample. Conclusion: Research finding emphasize unfavourable burn-out syndrome prevalence situation in nursing profession, and present a possibility of burn-out syndrome prevention by emotional intelligence development.
