The Fano factor, defined as the variance-to-mean ratio of spike counts in a time window, is often used to measure the variability of neuronal spike trains. However, despite its transparent definition, careless use of the Fano factor can easily lead to distorted or even wrong results. One of the problems is the unclear dependence of the Fano factor on the spiking rate, which is often neglected or handled insufficiently. In this paper we aim to explore this problem in more detail and to study the possible solution, which is to evaluate the Fano factor in the operational time. We use equilibrium renewal and Markov renewal processes as spike train models to describe the method in detail, and we provide an illustration on experimental data.

Problematika úrazů v sobě zahrnuje nejen problémy zdravotní, ale i sociální a ekonomické. Každý úraz má své příčiny a nestává se náhodou, vždy mu předchází riziková situace, kterou můžeme rozpoznat a vyhnout se jí. Epidemiologický charakter úrazovosti z ní činí veřejně zdravotnický problém, jehož ovlivnění prostřednictvím prevence může výrazně změnit délku a kvalitu života, ekonomickou zátěž zdravotnického systému i stav veřejného zdraví. Cílem výzkumu bylo zmapování příčin úrazovosti pacientů ošetřovaných v nemocnici České Budějovice, a. s., a zaměřit se na spokojenost pacientů s péčí personálu. Pro zjištění dat byla použita metoda dotazování – technika dotazníku. Cílový soubor tvořili pacienti traumatologického a rehabilitačního oddělení Nemocnice České Budějovice, a. s. Nejčastějším typem úrazu, který dotazovaní prodělali, byla uzavřená zlomenina. Nejčastěji se vyskytovaly domácí úrazy. Hlavní příčinou úrazu byla neopatrnost a nepozornost. Největší psychickou podporu pro vyrovnání se s úrazem představovala rodina. Respondenti, kteří absolvovali hospitalizaci nebo se setkali se zdravotnickým personálem při ošetření úrazu, hodnotili práci zdravotníků většinou velmi kladně, což vypovídá nejen o kvalitní zdravotní péči, ale také o dobrém přístupu zdravotníků k pacientům.

Problems of injuries include not only health, but also social and economical issues. Every injury has its own causes and it does not occur purely by chance. It is always preceded by a risk situation, which can be recognized and avoided. The epidemiological nature of the rate of injuries makes it a public healthcare problem, which can be affected by preventive measures and thus, the life span, quality of life, economical burden to the healthcare system and condition of the public health can be considerably changed. The target of the research work presented here was mapping of causes of injuries in patients treated in the Hospital České Budějovice with taking into account the satisfaction of patients with the work of caregivers. The method of interviews and questionnaires was employed for the data accumulation. The target group included patients treated at the Department of Traumatology and Rehabilitation of the Hospital České Budějovice, a.s. In the subjects inquired, closed fracture was the most frequently occurring type of the injury. The injuries were most typically encountered in households. The main cause of the injury was a carelessness and lack of alertness. The family provided the most important psychical support making the patient possible to face the injury. The respondents, who experienced hospitalization or treatment of their injuries by healthcare personnel, mostly very positively evaluated the work of healthcare professionals, which suggested not only a high quality of the health care, but also an appropriate attitude of the healthcare professionals to the patients.
