BACKGROUND: Evidence-based nursing practice (EBNP) has been regarded core competencies in nursing practice and education. Defining evidence-based nursing practice and translating evidence into nursing practice by nursing students who are green to clinical practice in their education journey remain unclear. AIM: To explore how pre-registered nursing students define and characterize evidence-based nursing practice as they participate in their clinical practicum. DESIGN: This study used an interpretive phenomenological qualitative study design. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: Twenty nursing students were interviewed for their clinical practicum experience from four universities, one nursing college and one hospital-based nursing school in Hong Kong. METHODS: Data was generated through semi-structured in-depth interview and analyzed following interpretative phenomenological analysis guidelines, using a cyclical coding process. RESULTS: Four themes emerged regarding nursing students' definition of EBNP, highlighting that EBNP is 'identifying a reliable learning source', by which they can 'rationalize their nursing practice', and enabling them to 'establish care standard through critical thinking', and eventual 'fostering their professionalism' to improve health outcomes and reduce potential harms. CONCLUSION: Nursing students defined and characterized evidence-based nursing practice as core competencies in accompany their practicum that enables them to learn and grow professionally with a universal desire to be qualified, cope with doubt, and improve patient outcome. They recognized the challenges in identifying evidence and emphasized conservative approach to validate the evidence to avoid patient harm. Students expressed doubt towards their instructors EBNP when observing procedures untaught at school, which requires the curriculum model to foster students' skills in applying and appraising evidence and instructors' capacity to rationalize and role model EBNP.

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between Hungarian nursing students' career choices and nursing professionalism in the context of sex and gender roles. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: The study, conducted between March 2023 and June 2023, employed a combination of a self-developed questionnaire and validated measurement instruments (Bem Sex Role Inventory 12 - BSRI-12; Nurse Professional Competence Scale - NPC Scale; 10-item Gender Role Beliefs Scale - GRBS). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. The sample consisted of 252 BSc nursing students in Hungary (53 males, 199 females). Results: It was found that most students surveyed exhibited feminine traits (n = 84) and adhered to traditional gender roles (n = 132). Statistical analysis demonstrated significant associations between nursing students' gender roles (p = 0.004), adherence to traditional gender roles (p < 0.000), and levels of nursing professionalism. Notably, an androgynous gender role correlated with heightened nursing professionalism (p < 0.001). Additionally, career choice motivations were influenced by sex, gender role, and individual perceptions of gender roles. Conclusion: A diversity of gender roles which influence individuals' future careers in nursing was identified. Different motivating factors play a role in male and female nursing students' career choices, knowledge of which would be useful in student recruitment in order to reduce nursing staff shortages.
Aim: To explore the link between nurse professional competence and various educational components within nursing education based on empirical evidence. Design: A scoping review. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted from 1999 to 2024 using the Academic Search Premier, Business Source Complete, CINAHL, Education Research Complete, ERIC, and PubMed databases. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Thirty relevant studies met the inclusion criteria. The identified competencies were grouped into three main categories: management, nursing intervention, and societal and social competencies. Educational components were divided into two main categories: directive-regulated curricula and optional educational components. Most nurse competencies were linked to one or more educational components. Conclusion: This review found that competencies such as patient care initiation, interprofessional teamwork and nurse leadership received more research attention than others. The most frequently studied educational components were study modules / training in nursing curricula and clinical placements. However, no clear link was found between nurse competence and educational components for graduate nurses.
AIM: To explore the influence of supervisory and mentoring relationships on the clinical learning experiences of Czech Nursing and health professional students in the context of patient safety events BACKGROUND: Clinical experience is integral to healthcare education, shaping skills, behaviours, values and professional identity. During clinical placements, students may encounter memorable patient safety events and experience varied reactions from mentors/supervisors/others. Some research has highlighted challenges faced by students on clinical placement. Few studies involve multiple professions, most emanating from Western Europe, the UK, the USA and Australia with little relating to central European countries such as the Czech Republic. DESIGN: Two stage interpretivist qualitative study based in social constructionism METHODS: Convenience sample across 13 undergraduate and 18 postgraduate health professions courses. Stage 1 (2022): using SLIPPS Learning Event Recording Tool translated into Czech. 20 students' (Midwifery=11, Nursing=1, Paramedic=1, Occupational therapy =7) submitted 21 patient safety learning event narratives. Stage 2 (2022): Focus group with 2 nursing and nine midwifery students. Phased thematic analysis involving multiple researchers. RESULTS: Three themes illustrate the circumstances and impact of placement mentoring/supervision experiences, conceptualised as: 'Clinical and Emotional Companionship', 'Clinical and Emotional Abandonment' and 'Sense of agency - Professional and personal growth'. 'Companionship' reflected the students' feelings of being welcomed, respected, heard, trusted and supported. Conversely 'abandonment' emerged from feelings of being unheard, vulnerable, humiliated, afraid, leaving students feeling abandoned, lonely and 'useless'. Notwithstanding these conditions, students showed the ability to identify patient safety issues with agency evident in reactions such as stepping-in to try to ameliorate a situation, rather than speaking-up. Professional and personal growth was also apparent in their narratives and a conceptual diagram illustrates the students' learning journeys in a patient safety context. CONCLUSION: The findings and new conceptualisations around abandonment and companionship emerging from this study expand the evidence base regarding the profound impact of clinical experience and mentorship/supervision on learning and students' emotional wellbeing. A sense of companionship appears to play a buffering role even in challenging circumstances of involvement in or witnessing compromised patients' safety. Allowing students a sense of belonging, to vent, grow, feel supported and safe to ask/learn - contributing to 'emotional safety for learning', promotes students' behaviour that may prevent/minimize hazards or ameliorate the aftermath. However, we must not simply blame mentors/supervisors, staff, or the students themselves- they are simply part of a much larger complex environment of professional education encompassing hidden curriculums, power dynamics and professional socialisation.

Background and Purpose: Nursing students have an essential role in patient safety. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the face validity, content validity, and psychometric properties of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture for Nursing Students (HSOPS-NS). Methods: The cross-sectional study was carried out between January and October 2021. The participants were undergraduate nursing students (N = 482) from 16 Czech nursing faculties. Results: Exploratory factor analysis revealed an 8-factor structure, which was verified by confirmatory factor analysis using the optimization process that results in adequate goodness-of-fit indices (root mean squared error approximation = .037; standardized root mean squared residuals = .056; comparative fit index = .935; Tucker-Lewis index = .926; incremental fit index = .936). The internal consistency of a new model was excellent (α = .914). Conclusion: The results indicate that the HSOPS-NS shows evidence of reliability and validity and is a valuable measure of safety culture as perceived by nursing students.

Aim: Stress negatively affects studentsʼ health, self-esteem, and clinical performance. Although stress has been analyzed on a long-term basis and many clinical stressors are known, some of the factors potentially triggering stress have not been adequately studied, and the results are not consistent. Our research focused on an assessment of the stress intensity that nursing and midwifery students experience and the impact of ward type, difficulty in providing nursing care, and previous experience on perceptions of stress. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The study sample (n = 258) consisted of 65.5% nursing and 34.5% midwifery students who had completed their clinical training in basal pediatric (36.5%), surgical (27.5%), and medical (36.0%) wards. We analyzed stress intensity (0-10), perception of the difficulty in providing nursing care from the studentʼs perspective (0-10), and their previous experience. Results: Across the entire group of students, the stress intensity was 3.84 (SD = 2.71). Students providing care in pediatric wards (M = 4.72) experienced the highest stress intensity, especially when compared to students in medical wards (M = 2.69), (p < 0.001). The provision of care is most demanding in pediatric wards (M = 4.91) compared to surgical (M = 2.97) and medical wards (M = 3.08), (p < 0.001). Difficulty in providing care is significantly associated with stress intensity (r = 0.548). Previous clinical experience reduces the perception of stress. However, we found a significant decrease only in surgical and medical wards. Conclusion: To reduce the perception of stress in pediatric wards, attention needs to be paid to the quality of pre-clinical training focused on pediatric patient care. At the same time, it is important to increase the effectiveness of clinical education in pediatric wards.

Aim: To investigate the reasons for unfinished nursing care (UNC), its prevalence and patterns, and to explore its relationship to level of teamwork as perceived by Slovak postgraduate nursing students. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Methods: The study was conducted between November 2022 and January 2023. Data collection was carried out using a set of questionnaires that involved the Unfinished Nursing Care Survey tool to measure UNC and the Nursing Teamwork Survey (NTS) to investigate level of teamwork. The sample consisted of 159 postgraduate nursing students from five public universities in different regions of the Slovak Republic. Results: The mean composite score of UNC was 2.41 (SD = 0.71) and for the NTS, 3.25 (SD = 0.51). An overall weak association was found between UNC and Trust (r = -0.164), Backup (r = -0.157), Shared mental model (r = -0.158), and Team leader (r = -0.187). Teamwork did not predict perceptions of UNC. Conclusion: These findings suggest that nursing students are aware of the phenomenon of UNC and reflect on reasons for its occurrence, including ineffective teamwork among nursing staff. During clinical placements, nursing students should be integrated into nursing teams and the importance of teamwork should be emphasized during nursing studies. However, there is a need for further research to better understand and address these phenomena in nursing education and practice.

Aim: To investigate how nursing students assess their competencies in patient safety in the Czech Republic. Design: A pilot study. Methods: Data collection was carried out from January to April 2023 using the Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey instrument through the Google Forms® platform. The sample consisted of nursing students from seven faculties in the Czech Republic (n = 145). Descriptive and inductive statistics in the statistical program SPSS 25.0 were used in data analysis. Results: Nursing students were more confident in both academic and clinical settings in the subscale of Managing safety risks (M = 3.85), and less confident in the subscale of Culture of safety (M = 3.54). Significant differences in assessment of competencies were found in three dimensions when academic and clinical settings were compared. Numerous associations were also demonstrated between patient safety dimensions and sociodemographic data, with the greatest impact on clinical factors. Conclusion: Evaluation of patient safety competencies is a key element in increasing quality and safe care in general. Integrating sociocultural aspects of patient safety into the nursing curriculum is crucial. The main focus should be on patient safety culture education.

Cieľ: Zhromaždiť a porovnať existujúce empirické výskumné štúdie o faktoroch ovplyvňujúcich vnímanie bezpečnosti pacienta z pohľadu študentov ošetrovateľstva. Záver: Vnímanie bezpečnosti pacienta študentmi ošetrovateľstva bolo ovplyvnené vzdelávacím a klinickým prostredím. Vo vzťahu k vzdelávaniu je potrebné integrovať tému bezpečnosti pacienta na začiatku štúdia v odbore ošetrovateľstvo a posilniť doterajšie poznatky o nežiaducich udalostiach.
Introduction: Patient safety is one of the main priorities of healthcare facilities worldwide. The perspective of nursing students on patient safety is essential for planning strategies to improve patient safety and its culture. Nursing students' perception of patient safety may differ between teaching and learning practices in nursing faculties, but also depends on the clinical experience gained during clinical placement. Objective: To collate existing empirical research studies on factors influencing the perception of patient safety from the perspective of nursing students. Methods: The search was performed in scientific databases PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest in February 2023 and was limited to one language (English). The search produced 1,703 studies. The content analysis method was used in data synthesis. Results: 36 studies were considered relevant for the review. 23 factors that affect the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of nursing students towards patient safety were determined. Four main factor groups were described as follows: Factors related to demographic data; Factors related to clinical environment; Factors related to academic environment; Contextual factors. Conclusion: Nursing students' perception of patient safety was influenced by the educational and clinical environment. In relation to education, there is a need to integrate the patient safety subject at the beginning of nursing studies and to strengthen existing knowledge about adverse events.
Aim: The aim of the study was threefold: 1) to validate and analyze the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Caring Ability Inventory (CAI-PL); 2) to analyze the impact of the motivation for choosing a career in nursing on the ability to provide care; and 3) to determine whether previous experience in providing care as part of volunteer work affected respondents' caring ability. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: The study was performed in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines. Data were collected using the online form between May and July 2021. Construct validity and reliability of the instrument were tested using SPSS 25.0. Results: A satisfactory level of CAI content validity was observed; the CAI-PL was composed of 36 items and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the entire scale was 0.715, confirming high internal consistency. The mean score obtained by respondents on the Caring Ability Inventory was 189.55. Conclusion: The study showed satisfactory psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Caring Ability Inventory, confirming its potential to measure nurses' level of caring ability - both in education and research.
