BACKGROUND: Chronic skin exposure to a wet work environment, as well as disinfectants are factors contributing to epidermal barrier damage. This disturbs its protective functions and promotes the development of dermatoses. All these factors occur in the work environment of a laboratory diagnostician. The aim of the paper was to analyze selected skin parameters and skin lesions in the hands of laboratory diagnosticians. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Overall, 50 laboratory diagnosticians employed in a laboratory in Kraków, Poland, took part in the study. After the interview, the skin pH and moisture content were examined. Measurements were performed on the dorsal side of the dominant hand using the Skin-ph-Meter® PH 905 and Corneometer® CM 825 devices. RESULTS: The obtained moisture level values were qualified as dry or very dry skin, and the skin pH was within the reference range. No correlation between the skin pH value and the features examined (professional experience, the number of hours spent in protective gloves during the day, the number of hand washing episodes during the day) was not indicated. The level of skin moisture content seems to positively correlate with the time of wearing gloves. The use of hand moisturizers after each hand washing episode correlated with the level of skin moisture content. CONCLUSIONS: During the COVID-19 pandemic, this professional group has been facing huge challenges, and mental and physical stressors (including wet work environment) will be the source of future occupational diseases. BACKGROUND: The aim of this article is to present the prestige of selected medical professions in the opinion of people practicing these professions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted by means of the survey technique. The research tool was an original questionnaire prepared by the authors of the study, which was carried out on a sample of 346 professionally active physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, psychotherapists, and occupational therapists. Those people were employed in public institutions (hospitals, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation centers) located in Kraków and Katowice. The selection of the sample was deliberate. RESULTS: The profession of a physician received the highest score of prestige, while the lowest one was achieved by the profession of an occupational therapist. As factors influencing the prestige of a given profession, physicians and physiotherapists most often indicated social respect for the profession, while nurses, psychotherapists, and occupational therapists emphasized the importance of education. The level of prestige of medical professions, as compared with other professions, decreased with seniority. CONCLUSIONS: The profession of a physician occupies the leading position in the hierarchy of the self-assessed prestige of medical professions. Physicians notice a general tendency to assess the prestige of their profession in a broader context - the position of this profession is weakening in favor of other public utility jobs, despite the fact that physicians still occupy an important place in the rankings of prestige including all professions. A negative self-assessment of the prestige of the occupation performed over the period of ten years prevail only in the case of physicians and nurses. Med Pr. 2019;70(5):587-95.

Currently, chromium is probably the most controversial transition metal. In recent publications it is clearly stated that it is not an essential micronutrient and should be considered to have a pharmacological effect. Conflicting scientific reports along with a huge amount of dietary supplements, as well as dietary and sports nutrients available on the market have prompted the authors to investigate the available information on the range of possible application, efficacy and safety of products containing salts or chelates of chromium III. The authors reviewed articles in electronic databases for the years 1959-2016, and selected works describing the biochemical, physiological and toxic properties of chromium salts and chelates and the range of possible applications in medicine, dietetics and sport. A critical analysis of reports dealing with the effect of chromium on the carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, body composition, lean body mass and sports performance was carried out. The authors indicated papers analyzing the mechanism of action of chromium in the cognitive and affective disorders. Much attention has been paid to the safety use of chromium III supplements. There are still some unsolved issues. In the field of toxicology, a limited number of reports about environmental exposure to trivalent chromium in the workplace draws our attention. In the field of biochemical research, there is still a need to clarify the mechanism of psychiatric and endocrinological activity, especially in conjunction with the immune system. Metoda Tarkowskiego reprezentuje systemowe podejście do terapii osób jąkających się w różnym wieku. Zakłada ono, że struktura jąkania obejmuje czynniki lingwistyczne (np. niepłynność mówienia), biologiczne (np. wzmożone napięcie mięśniowe), psychologiczne (np. logofobia) i społeczne (np. stres komunikacyjny). W artykule podano przykłady takiego podejścia w wieku przedszkolnym, szkolnym i dojrzałym.
The method used by Professor Tarkowski represent a system approach to the therapy of people who stutter at a different age. This approach assumes that the structure of stuttering involves linguistic factors (e.g. speech disfluency), biological factors (e.g. excessive muscle tension), psychological factors (e.g. logophobia) and social factors (e.g. communication stress). Previous approaches focus mainly on particular factors corresponding to the therapist specialties. Physicians are used to biological factors, psychologists to psychological factors, speech therapists to linguistic and social factors. In the method used by Professor Tarkowski the whole structure of stuttering is affected, aiming at reducing speech disfluency, muscle tension, logophobia and increasing the ability to deal with communication stress. The only specialist who takes the challenge is a balbutologist, who takes the responsibility for the course of the therapy and its results. Examples of such an approach in the kindergarten, school and mature age are presented within this article.
