Decisions related to the treatment of oncological diseases bring various ethical dilemmas to healthcare providers caring for cancer patients. Along with the development of medicine and new therapeutic methods, there are also increased demands on the appropriate selection of eligible patients for allocation to a particular treatment method, which causes a number of ethical connotations. The paper deals with ethical issues in the course of oncology treatment, with theoretical bases for ethical decision-making and with ethical aspects of communication with patients suffering from oncological diseases. The paper also contains results of studies that dealt with methods of ethical reasoning of health professionals in relation with the Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) decision in oncology, and with understanding of the concept of ethical competence of health professionals in order to make, or be involved in, DNR decisions, and how relevant skills can be developed. Among others, the results of the studies pointed out that in order to make ethically based DNR decisions in oncology, physicians and nurses need to improve their knowledge of ethical theories.

Popisuji dotazníkový výzkum v oblasti deskriptivní etiky, diskutuji výsledky a zavádím prospektivní experimenty.
This article outlines a “descriptive animal ethics” based on the study of people's intuitions about particular cases, in order to determine which moral theories best comport with those intuitions. I suggest that the latter need not be unreliable since they may be endorsed as considered judgments, and that even if they were, knowing them would still provide relevant information for a complete moral theory concerned with what moral agents can do. I describe a survey in descriptive ethics, discuss the results, and introduce prospective experiments. I then set forth hypotheses and propose a dual model of moral status attribution in terms of both intrinsic and extrinsic properties. I rely on recent empirical research in psychology and experimental philosophy, which I confront with the above results, to support my hypotheses. The model predicts that attributions vary depending on the capacities of entities, their context (including relationships), and the context of the attributor. These facts of descriptive ethics, I conclude, are directly relevant to normative ethics insofar as our cognitive apparatus constrains our ability to act morally. Moreover, they suggest ways to improve moral perception, education, and motivation.

What is the value of life? Or more specifically, what is the value of human life? According to the doctrine of the sanctity of human life, all human beings are intrinsically valuable, but this theory is far from being orthodoxy in current bioethics. John Harris is one of the advocates of the new theory of the value of human life (mainly in his book The Value of Life), according to which intrinsically valuable are only persons. Persons are beings -human or not--capable of higher mental functions that consequently can value their own life (self-consciousness is a necessary condition for personhood) and can have the desire to go on living. The overall aim of this critical study is to go into Harris's arguments in some depth. In the first part the general logical structure of Harris's argumentation is put forward and its consequences for current bioethical issues (abortion, infanticide, euthanasia) are pointed up. In the second part two fatal flaws of Harris's thoughts are exposed. It is showed that his argumentation is circular, it presupposes theory it aims to develop. The article concludes by stating that as fatally flawed, Harris's theory of the value of human life is unjustified and inadequate for dealing with current bioethical issues.
The article The Human Embryo from a Bioethical Perspective devotes in detail to the contemporary bioethical discussion on the moral status of the human embryo. First, it rises an issue whether a human embryo is an individual being of a human kind since the moment of fertilization and it critically assesses some objections against individuality of the human embryo. Following that it focuses on criteria of personal identity and its relevance for bioethical discussion. It critically deals with the so called constitutionalism. Metaphysical reflection is concluded by a defense of animalism. The last part of the article evaluates ethical relativism, utilitarianism and brings in an outline of an ethical theory of John M. Finnis. The conclusion of the work consists of the thesis that the human embryo is a human being since the moment of its creation, abounding in inherent, inalienable human rights.
The aim of this paper is to discuss the topic of instrumentality within the area of competitive sport and to explore its consequences. First, I shall describe two kinds of instrumentality in sports – internal and external instrumentality. Second, I shall discuss the consequences of both of these kinds of instrumentality on the athletes and their performance. Instrumentality influences the quality of sport performance from the point of view of the quality of movement and from ethical point of view. In the conclusion, I shall ask questions about the idea of diminishing instrumentality in sport, which might help us the better to understand sport, sport practice and last but not least ourselves.

Both theory and practice are important in ethical education; it can even be said that those two elements complement and support each other and can constitute a proper subject of ethical education only if they form an integrated unity. Therefore, education understood in such a way concentrates on both theory and action. Thus ethics can constitute a separate subject but its subject matter can also be transmitted through standard exercises, games and activities commonly used in PE lessons to form students’ attitudes toward their bodily dimension. PE teachers can therefore communicate moral values directed towards the good of an individual: perseverance, dignity, freedom, tolerance, etc. They can also form in their students values directed at the needs of community, such as justice, responsibility, solidarity, loyalty. Ethical knowledge not only is a theoretical basis for PE teachers, justifying their work, but also gives them tools that can be used in solving conflicts among students, supporting their balanced development and building civil society. This knowledge enables them to identify the value systems of individual students, defining their needs and the goals of their existence. It relates to the system of values functioning in communities and in society as a whole. Thus PE lessons, enriched by ethical knowledge, complement ethics taught as a separate subject.
