This paper investigates the influence of cutting speed and flank wear on the depth profile of residual stresses, as well as the fraction of retained austenite after hard turning of quenched bearing steel 100Cr6. Residual stress and retained austenite profiles were studied for the white layer, heat-affected zone thickness, and XRD sensing depth. It was found that the influence of flank wear on the white layer and heat-affected zone thickness predominates. On the other hand, residual stresses are affected the cutting speed and the superimposing contribution of flank wear. Moreover, these aspects also alter microhardness in the affected regions. The study also demonstrates that information concerning residual stresses and the austenite fraction is integrated into the white layer, and the heat-affected zone in the surface is produced by the insert of low flank wear since the XRD sensing depth is more than the thickness of the white layer. On the other hand, the pure contribution of the white layer or the heat-affected zone to residual stress and the austenite fraction can be investigated when the affected surface region is thick enough.

The present article intended to study the influence of post-synthetic modification with ethylenediamine (en, diamine) and diethylenetriamine (deta, triamine) within the coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUSs) of HKUST-1 on carbon dioxide and hydrogen storage. The as-sythesized adsorbent was solvent-exchanged and subsequently post-synthetically modified with di-/triamines as sources of amine-based sorption sites due to the increased CO2 storage capacity. It is known that carbon dioxide molecules have a high affinity for amine groups, and moreover, the volume of amine molecules itself reduces the free pore volume in HKUST-1, which is the driving force for increasing the hydrogen storage capacity. Different concentrations of amines were used for modification of HKUST-1, through which materials with different molar ratios of HKUST-1 to amine: 1:0.05; 1:0.1; 1:0.25; 1:0.5; 1:0.75; 1:1; 1:1.5 were synthesized. Adsorption measurements of carbon dioxide at 0 °C up to 1 bar have shown that the compounds can adsorb large amounts of carbon dioxide. In general, deta-modified samples showed higher adsorbed amounts of CO2 compared to en-modified materials, which can be explained by the higher number of amine groups within the deta molecule. With an increasing molar ratio of amines, there was a decrease in wt.% CO2. The maximum storage capacity of CO2 was 22.3 wt.% for HKUST-1: en/1:0.1 and 33.1 wt.% for HKUST-1: deta/1:0.05 at 0 °C and 1 bar. Hydrogen adsorption measurements showed the same trend as carbon dioxide, with the maximum H2 adsorbed amounts being 1.82 wt.% for HKUST-1: en/1:0.1 and 2.28 wt.% for HKUST-1: deta/1:0.05 at - 196 °C and 1 bar.

High-strength steels are used more than general structural steel due to their combination of properties such as high strength, good toughness and weldability. They are mainly used in the manufacture of heavy vehicles for the mining industry, cranes, transportation, etc. However, welding these grades of steel brings new challenges. Also, a simulation for welding high-strength steel is required more often. To insert a material database into the simulation program, it is necessary to conduct investigations using CCT (Continuous Cooling Transformation) diagrams, welded joints research, and more. To investigate the behavior of S960MC steel during heating and cooling, we used dilatometry analysis supported by EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction) analysis. A CCT diagram was constructed. The transformation temperatures of Ac1 and Ac3 increase with increasing heating rate. The Ac1 temperature increased by 54 °C and the Ac3 temperatures by 24 °C as the heating rate increased from 0.1 °C/s to 250 °C/s. The austenite decomposition temperatures have a decreasing trend in the cooling phase with increasing cooling rate. As the cooling rate changes from 0.03 °C/s to 100 °C/s, the initial transformation temperature drops from 813 °C to 465 °C. An increase in the cooling rate means a higher proportion of bainite and martensite. At the same time, the hardness increases from 119 HV10 to 362 HV10.

This study investigated 960 Slovak and Czech spotted cattle from four different conventional (non-organic) dairy herds located in Eastern Slovakia and Czechia during early lactation (14-100 days after calving). Dairy cows were examined clinically; milk from fore-stripping of each udder quarter was subjected to sensory examination and assessed by the California mastitis test (CMT), and laboratory analyses of bacterial pathogens in milk, including virulence factors, were conducted. Positive CMT scores (1-3) for one or more quarters were detected in 271 (28.2%) of the examined animals. Out of 230 infected milk samples, representing 24.0% of all dairy cows, staphylococci (59.1% of positive findings) were the most commonly isolated organisms, followed by E. coli (11.3%), streptococci Str. uberis (9.1%) and Str. agalactiae (3.4%), and enterococci (6.1%). From 136 isolates of S. aureus (38 isolates) and non-aureus staphylococci (NAS; 98 isolates), virulence factors and their resistance to 14 antimicrobials were detected using the disk diffusion method, with PCR detection of the methicillin resistance gene, mecA. An increased incidence of clinical and chronic forms of mastitis has been reported in mastitic cows in which staphylococci, especially S. aureus and NAS (S. chromogenes, S. warneri, and S. xylosus), have been detected and compared to other isolated udder pathogens. From those species, S. aureus and isolates of NAS mentioned above showed multiple virulence factors that are more likely to hydrolyze DNA, hemolysis, produce gelatinase and biofilm, and have multi-drug resistance as compared to other less virulent staphylococci. Generally, the isolated staphylococci showed 77.2% resistance to one or more antimicrobials, in particular to aminoglycosides, β-lactams, macrolides, or cephalosporins. Isolates that showed the ability to form a biofilm were more resistant to more than one antimicrobial than isolates without biofilm production. Multi-drug resistance to three or more antimicrobial classes was recorded in 16 isolates (11.7%), and the presence of the mecA gene was also confirmed in two isolates of S. aureus and two species of NAS.

The present paper analyzes the damage of surfaces at spots of frictional contact, namely, the friction nodes on a camshaft and the connecting rod pins of a crankshaft. The resulting wear of the monitored friction nodes reduces the technical life of the machines, which can lead to the decommissioning of the machine. Wear was assessed by measuring roughness and microhardness and by observing the microstructures of the materials. The results of the experiments show that the rotating parts displayed visible wear on the cams, as well as on the connecting rod pins. The experiments revealed that wear was caused by the heating of the material to a high temperature during the operation of the machine and that there was a gradual cooling and tempering of the material, which led to a reduction in the microhardness of the monitored object. Lower microhardness values can be a cause of greater wear of the monitored objects. When comparing the microhardness of the used and the new camshaft, the hardened layer of the new camshaft from secondary production has a significantly smaller thickness compared to worn cams, which leads to the finding of a different material quality compared to the original parts from primary production. This fact indicates that the wear of a new camshaft as a spare part can contribute to the shortening of the technical life of friction nodes.

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of selected essential oils thyme chemotype linalool (Thymus zygis L.), thyme chemotype tymol (Thymus vulgaris L.), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.), mint (Mentha piperita L.), almond (Prunbus dulcis Mill.), cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum zeylanicum Nees), litsea (Litsea cubeba Lour. Pers), lemongrass (Cympogon citrati L. Stapf), and ginger (Zingiber officinalis Rosc.) in the vapor phase on growth, sporulation, and mycotoxins production of two Aspergillus strains (Aspergillus parasiticus CGC34 and Aspergillus ochraceus CGC87), important postharvest pathogens of green and roasted coffee beans. Moreover, the effect of the essential oils (EOs) on the sensory profile of the coffee samples treated with EOs was evaluated. The major components of tested EOs were determined by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The results showed that almond, cinnamon bark, lemongrass, and litsea EOs are able to significantly inhibit the growth, sporulation, and mycotoxins production by toxigenic fungi. Sensory evaluation of coffee beans treated with EOs before and after roasting showed that some EOs (except lemongrass and litsea) do not adversely affect the taste and aroma of coffee beverages. Thus, application of the vapors of almond and cinnamon EOs appears to be an effective way that could serve to protect coffee during its transport and storage from toxigenic fungi.

A series of di-/trinitroxide esters and amides featuring PROXYL and/or TEMPO radicals connected with alicyclic bridges were prepared in 61-92 % yields and their properties were analysed by using multiple experimental techniques. The examination of EPR spectra of radicals in organic solvents augmented with DFT calculations brought valuable information on the conformational dynamics and spin exchange mechanisms. Cyclic voltammetry investigations revealed (quasi)reversible electrochemical behaviour of studied nitroxides with their half-wave potentials ranging from -51 to -17 mV. SQUID measurements of selected radicals revealed that the magnetism of di- and trinitroxides is significantly different, since antiferromagnetic coupling in biradicals is notably larger than in triradicals. The single-crystal X-ray analysis of selected biradicals revealed the existence of 3D supramolecular networks of molecules linked through hydrogen-bonding interactions. These polynitroxide radicals can serve as promising bridging or chelating ligands in the synthesis of transition-metal-based molecular magnets.

The monitoring of various elements in the cow milk is important in the agricultural sector. The goal of this study was to determine the concentrations of calcium (Ca), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the milk samples coming from different origins (local region in Nitra, nationwide sample represents the common Slovak brands of milk and common brands of milk from Czech Republic widely available in Slovakia). The samples were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry. A high level of variability in the Cu, Fe, Na, Ni, and Zn contents was observed. Magnesium was comparatively high in the milk sample from Slovakia (273.23 ± 16.32 μg/mL) against sample from Nitra (230.91 ± 9.48 μg/mL) and Czech Republic (202.70 ± 10.83 μg/mL). Potassium was significantly higher in milk from Nitra region (3301.98 ± 95.66) against SK sample (2925.16 ± 75.74 μg/mL). There were no significant differences in other elements among the three regions. The provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) contribution suggested low dietary exposure to observed toxic metals (Cd, Hg, and Pb) in milk samples. Margin of exposure (MOE) evaluation denoted that even higher consumption of milk poses no high cardiovascular and nephrotoxicity threat. However, Cd and Pb are known for their cumulative effect and the monitoring of these elements in milk is strongly required.
