PURPOSE: Smoking among nurses is a barrier to providing smoking cessation interventions to patients. In Central and Eastern Europe-where tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and disease-there is limited knowledge about nurses' attitudes toward cessation interventions. Our aim was to describe the attitudes of nurses who are former and current smokers toward providing cessation interventions to patients as well as explore barriers and facilitators to their own quit efforts. METHODS: Nine focus groups with 81 nurses (94% females) in five Central and Eastern European countries. Content analysis was used to identify major themes. RESULTS: Nurses agreed that they should set a good example by not smoking; should be involved in helping patients stop smoking; and needed additional training in tobacco control. Five common themes were identified as barriers to quitting: smoking cues in the environment; presence of smokers in the environment; relapse postpartum; stress and nicotine addiction; and misperceptions about the dangers of smoking. Former smokers reported facilitators to quitting including: seeing the health consequences of smoking among their patients; personal and family health concerns; receiving support from family; and pregnancy. CONCLUSION: There is a need to build upon nurses' positive attitudes about engaging in smoking cessation interventions with patients to ensure that cessation interventions are standard nursing practice. Future studies should focus on programs that support nurses' quit efforts by addressing barriers to smoking cessation, which will improve their health and patient care.

PURPOSE: The increase in patients diagnosed with and living with cancer calls for the provision of quality nursing care within this paradigm, one that can reflect the complex needs of the patient that cancer and its treatments induce. The study aimed to evaluate the quality of oncology nursing care, as perceived, by hospitalized cancer patients in three European countries. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. In-patients diagnosed with cancer were selected based on explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data was collected with the Quality of Oncology Nursing Care Scale- QONCS, comprising of 34 items grouped in 5 domains. Sociodemographic data was also retrieved. RESULTS: The sample included 610 patients receiving care in 2 hospitals in Cyprus (n = 274), 1 hospital in Greece (n = 144) and 2 hospitals in the Czech Republic (n = 192). Statistically significant differences were found between the three countries and across all domains of the QONCS, with the exception of the spiritual and religious care (p = 0.136). Age and days of treatment produced statistically significant differences across all the domains of the QONCS, whilst gender did not produced any statistically significant differences (p ranged from (0.136-0.369). CONCLUSION: This is one of the first studies that provide evidence on the Quality of Nursing Care delivered to patients diagnosed with cancer in various European countries. Discrepancies were found between the participating countries. However, the provision of spiritual and religious care by the nurses received the lowest scores across the three participating countries.

PURPOSE: The study aimed at assessing the presence of anxiety and depression in cancer inpatients receiving palliative care at an oncology department using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and determining whether anxiety and depression contribute to a lower quality of life controlled for pain and illness severity. METHOD: This cross-sectional study comprised 225 advanced cancer inpatients (a mean age of 65.1 years). Data were collected with the HADS, EORTC QLQ-C30 and Karnofsky Performance Status scale. RESULTS: Anxiety (HADS-a ≥8) was found in 33.9% and depression (HADS-d ≥8) in 47.6% of patients. Higher anxiety scores were observed in patients living with a partner (p = 0.042) and non-religious patients (p = 0.045). Correlations were found between anxiety, depression and all quality of life dimensions (r = 0.31-0.63). Multiple regression analysis showed that anxiety and depression contribute to lower physical and emotional functioning. Patients with anxiety (HADS-a ≥8) and depression (HADS-d ≥8) reported a lower total quality of life (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Management of anxiety and depression in cancer patients receiving palliative care may contribute to improvement in certain quality of life dimensions.

PURPOSE: Oral mucositis (OM) still represents a significant complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantations (HSCT). Observational studies focusing on risk factor definitions are still warranted. METHOD: A total of 126 patients participated in this observational study after autologous HSCT with the BEAM and HD-l-PAM 200mg/m(2) conditioning regimens. Basic clinical and laboratory variables and their impact on OM were assessed. RESULTS: Age, gender, body mass index, and baseline absolute neutrophil counts were not shown to have any negative impact on OM development. The multivariate analysis revealed oral cryotherapy non-provision as being the most significant predictor for OM incidence (p < 0.0001), followed by BEAM conditioning regimen (p = 0.007), OM in a patient's history (p = 0.002) and lower number of days since the last chemotherapy (p = 0.025). The cryotherapy was remarkably effective both in the single high-dose melphalan 200mg/m(2) conditioning regimen (18% OM in cryotherapy vs. 68% without it, p<0.0001) and in the multidrug BEAM (melphalan 140mg/m(2)) regimen (38% vs. 86%, p=0.006). CONCLUSION: Oral cryotherapy should be implemented into supportive care management in patients treated with high-dose melphalan short-infusion chemotherapy. Large and well-designed randomized trials are necessary to obtain more significant and reliable results and understanding regarding OM risk factors.
