This study explores the dynamics of coping strategies of Czech religious leaders during a peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. An interpretative phenomenological analysis reveals that mental health among pastors is closely linked to a need to maintain community and social contact, while physical health is related to limitations upon ritual elements. In all narratives, the lived experience of mental health in the form of prosocial behavior is significantly prioritized despite the possibility of spreading infection. The analysis also shows that maintaining the community is closely linked to risky behaviors, which positively affected group and individual well-being.

Parish priest Josef Toufar died as a direct consequence of torture committed by Communist State Security Service agents, forcing him to confess that "miraculous" movement of crucifix above the main altar during the Holy Mass held in the Roman-Catholic church in Číhošť was staged by using a technical equipment. Josef Toufar was presumably buried in a mass grave at the cemetery in Prague-Ďáblice under a false name Josef Zouhar. In 2013 the Czech Bishops' Conference grant an approval to begin the process of his beatification. However, the beatification required the exhumation and identification of the remains. In this case report, we describe the process of searching, exhumation, and the combined A-STR/Y-STR DNA analysis of remains of Pater Josef Toufar. His identification was feasible due to kinship analysis: buccal swabs of three family members (niece, grand-niece, and grand-nephew) were available for testing.

In April 2017, the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic issued a Guideline on Spiritual Care in Bedside Medical Facilities of Medical Service Providers. Through this document, the ministry established the much-needed framework for the operation of hospital chaplains in medical facilities, including the conditions for their activities, and defined some terms such as spiritual care, chaplains, etc. Although this is an important initiative on the part of the ministry, the guideline does not cover a number of aspects of spiritual care in bedside medical facilities and will need some specification and completion.

As military and prison chaplains have been active in the military or prison service for many years, nowadays, hospital chaplains have been active in many hospitals in the Czech Republic, too. The work of hospital chaplains, however, still lacks the necessary legislative framework and being embodied in law, which brings some drawbacks. These include primarily non-participation of the ministry of health as a contractual partner in the agreement on spiritual care in health care, the lack of a framework that would arrange the status of chaplains among other health professionals and the related uncertainty regarding career and competency profile of a chaplain. Moreover, the ministry has not set clear rules for the work of chaplains in hospitals, and due to this fact, it has created the space for providing this service also by unqualified persons. This may ultimately have a negative impact on patients. It is therefore the responsibility of the hospital management to arrange that only professional hospital chaplains sent to hospitals on the basis of an agreement between the hospital and the relevant church work there.Key words: hospital chaplain, spiritual assistant, health care system, legislation.
