binary logistic regression Dotaz Zobrazit nápovědu
Classifying a measurable clinical outcome as a dichotomous variable often involves difficulty with borderline cases that could fairly be assigned either of the two binary class memberships. In such situations the indicated class membership is often highly subjective and subject to, for instance, a measurement error. In other situations the intermediate level of a three-level ordinal factor may sometimes be explicitly reserved for cases which could likely belong to either of the two binary classes. Such indefinite readings are often eliminated from the statistical analysis. In this article we review conceptual and methodological aspects of employing proportional odds logistic regression for a three level ordinal factor as a suitable alternative to ordinary logistic regression when dealing with limited uncertainty in classifying clinical outcome as a binary variable.

Male rats and female mice were exposed to vapours of toluene, o-xylene and acetone in basic or double concentrations or to binary combinations of basic concentrations, for 4 and 2 hours, respectively. Basic air concentrations were for rats and mice (in ppm): toluene 270 and 380, o-xylene 230 and 320, acetone 1700 and 1530, respectively. The CNS effect-inhibition of electrically evoked seizure discharge-was measured immediately after exposure and blood levels of solvents were monitored during the desaturation phase. The effect of all binary mixtures was lower than that of double concentrations of each single component, the difference being significant only in mice, and lower than the additive effects predicted on the basis of regressions of the effect on air or on blood concentrations of individual components. On the target site in the neuronal membrane, the effects of mixtures were substantially less than additive. Blood concentrations of solvents immediately after the exposure to a mixture were generally higher in aromatics and lower in acetone than after exposure to individual solvents. The decline of blood toluene and even more so that of xylene after exposure was slowed down by acetone. Presumption of additivity seems to protect safely from acute neurotropic effects of solvents at realistic exposure levels. On the other hand, substantially protracted late phases of desaturation of aromatic solvents in the presence of slowly eliminated polar solvent points to a possible underestimation of exposure by biological exposure tests.

Rural people, particularly in developing nations, rely on livestock as a key source of income. In Pakistan, rural people depend profoundly on buffalo, cows, sheep, and goats to earn their livelihood. The systems of agricultural production are at risk because of the negative effects of climate change. It badly affects production and quality of milk and meat, animal health, productivity, breeding, feed, and rangelands of livestock production. Climate change risks assessment and adaptation are required to minimize losses from these effects, which are not just technical but also socioeconomically significant. Hence, based on data collected from 1080 livestock herders using a multistage sampling technique in Punjab, Pakistan this study aims to assess perceived impact of climate change on livestock production and to assess coping strategies. In addition, determinants of adaptation strategies and their effects on livestock production was also estimated. Binary Logistic Regression was used to identify the drivers of adaptation strategies. In addition, Multi Group Analysis (MGA) in Partial Least Squares Path Modelling (PLS-PM) was applied to compare adapter and non-adapter of climate change adaptation strategies. Findings indicated that there are spread of various diseases to livestock due to adverse effects of climatic variability. There was reduction in the availability of the livestock's feed. Moreover, competition of water and land resources of livestock was also increasing. Low production efficiency resulted in decline of milk yield and meat production. Likewise, mortality of livestock, increased in still births, reduction in reproductive performance, decline in animal fertility, longevity, and general fitness, decreased birthing rates, rises in age at foremost calving in beef cattle was also prevailing. There were different adaptation policies used by farmers to handle with climate change and these were influenced by several demographic, socioeconomic, and agronomic aspects. Findings indicated that nexus of risk perception, adaptation plans and their determinants are beneficial to reduce the consequences of climatic variability and it improve the wellbeing of the herders. Risk management system may be created to protect livestock against losses caused by extreme weather events by providing awareness regarding influence of climate change on livestock. Easy and cheaper credit should be provided to the farmers to manage with the vulnerabilities of climate change.

The preorbital gland plays not only an olfactory role in cervids but also a visual one. Opening this gland is an easy way for the calf to communicate with the mother, indicating hunger/satiety, stress, pain, fear, or excitement. This information can be also useful for farm operators to assess how fast the calves habituate to handling routines and to detect those calves that do not habituate and may suffer chronic stress in the future. Thirty-one calves were subjected to 2 consecutive experiments to clarify if observing preorbital gland opening is related to habituation to handling in red deer calves (Cervus elaphus). Calves were born in 3 different paddocks, handled as newborns (Exp. 1), and then subjected to the same routine handling but with different periodicity: every 1, 2, or 3 wk (Exp. 2). In Exp. 1, preorbital gland opening was recorded in newborns during an initial handling (including weighing, ear tagging, and sex determination). Preorbital gland opening occurred in 93% of calves during this procedure and was not affected by sex, time since birth, or birth weight. Experiment 2 consisted of measuring preorbital opening during the same routine handling (weighing, blood sampling, and rump touching to assess body condition) when calves were 1, 3, and 5 mo old. Binary logistic regression showed that gland opening was associated with habituation to handling, since at 1 and 3 mo the probability of opening the gland decreased with the number of handlings that a calf experienced before (P = 0.008 and P = 0.028, respectively). However, there were no further changes in preorbital gland opening rate in the 5-mo-old calves (P = 0.182). The significant influence of the number of previous handlings on the probability of opening the preorbital gland was confirmed through generalized linear model with repeated measures (P = 0.007). Preorbital gland opening decreased along the phases of the study. Nevertheless, we found a significant trend in individuals to keep similar opening patterns (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.807, P < 0.001), which suggests that the more stressed individuals can be detected with this method. Therefore, we conclude that preorbital gland opening during routine handlings is related to the number of previous handlings, and thus it can be used as an indicator of lack of habituation to handling in farmed cervids.

Although obesity is a multifactorial disorder caused by various behavioural, genetic and environmental influences, early life factors affecting certain critical periods during childhood (prenatal period, adiposity rebound period at 3-5 years and around 5-7 years, as well as puberty) are important in promoting obesity in adulthood. The objective was to determine the association between the birth weight, birth length, breastfeeding and time of introduction of complementary food with obesity among 302 healthy Caucasian children 6-7 years old. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to assess the impact of a number of perinatal and socioeconomic confounding factors on the likelihood for overweight and obesity among children. The level of significance was set at p <0.05. Our findings indicate that duration of breastfeeding for at least 3 months, with introduction of complementary food after the age of 6 months have an important role in preventing obesity. This findings are crucial for planning preventive strategies to prevent further increases in the prevalence of overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is becoming a serious problem predominantly in geriatric patients, who are a significant risk group. The goal of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for mortality in CDI patients and to construct a binary logistic regression model that describes the probability of mortality in geriatric patients suffering from CDI. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we evaluated a group of 235 patients over 65 years of age with confirmed diagnoses of CDI, hospitalized at the Department of Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and General Practice, Brno, from January 2008 to December 2013. The examined group comprised 148 women (63 %) and 87 men (37 %). For the diagnosis of CDI, confirmation of A and B toxins in the patients' stool or an autopsy confirmation was crucial. RESULTS: The impact of antibiotic therapy on the increased incidence of CDI was clearly confirmed in our study group when examining patients' histories. Other risk factors included cerebrovascular disease, dementia, the presence of pressure ulcers, and immobility. Our new model consisted of a combination of the following parameters: the number of antibiotics used (from patients' history), nutritional status (Mini Nutritional Assessment short-form test), presence of pressure ulcers, and occurrence of fever. CONCLUSION: Our logistic regression model may predict mortality in geriatric patients suffering from CDI. This could help improve the therapeutic process.

AIM: We mapped the situation within a group of diseases of the circulatory system (I00-I99) in the Slovak Republic during 1996-2014. We focused mainly on spatiotemporal differences in mortality while controlling for age and sex. METHODS: We performed binary logistic regression aiming to reveal socio-demographic factors that influence the odds of dying due to diseases of the circulatory system (I00-I99). In our analysis, the dependent variable was death diagnosis and the independent variables were age, region, gender, and marital status. RESULTS: Our findings suggest that odds of dying due to diseases of the circulatory system (I00-I99) increased for every year of age by 5.4%. Within the period from 1996 to 2014, the risk of dying from diseases of the circulatory system decreased by 2% every year. We also documented the fact that being female raised the odds of dying due to diseases of the circulatory system (I00-I99) by 12.9% compared to males. Furthermore, it could be argued that serious differences in terms of regional distribution of deaths caused by diseases of the circulatory system (I00-I99) exist in the Slovak Republic. CONCLUSIONS: We present the development of diseases of the circulatory system (I00-I99) in the Slovak Republic. Differences in spatial distribution of deaths are documented as well as related gender differences. Our study can serve as a tool for policy makers and benchmark for professionals.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to asses the impact of haemostatic and platelet receptor gene polymorphisms as an inherited risk factor for premature onset of myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: Polymorphisms of platelet receptors - GP Ia (807C>T, rs1126643), GP VI (13254T>C, rs1613662), GP IIIa (HPA-1, rs5918), PAR -1 (IVS -14A>T; rs168753), P2Y(12) (34C>T, rs6785930 and H1/H2 haplotype, rs2046934), and genetic variations of the gene coding for cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) ( -842A>G, rs10306114 and 50C>T, rs3842787) were investigated. Mutations in the genes coding for coagulation factor V (Q506R (Leiden) mutation, rs6025) and factor II (prothrombin G20210A, rs1799963) were also determined. The prevalence of gene polymorphisms was investigated in 105 consecutive patients with premature MI. This was compared with the same gene polymorphism prevalence in a group of 132 patients in which coronary artery disease had been excluded. Genotyping was done using PCR, followed by melting curve analysis with specific fluorescent hybridization probes. RESULTS: A significant association between GP VI 13254C allele carriers and premature MI was found (p=0.025). No other differences in prevalence of the investigated polymorphisms between the compared patient populations reached statistical significance. In a logistic regression, which took other cardiovascular risk factors into account, the significance of the GP VI 13254C allele and vascular risk was suggested (OR 1.888, 95% C.I. 1.029 to 3.464, p=0.040). In a binary logistic regression the positive relationship between the GP VI genotype and female gender was observed (0R 3.676; 95% C.I. 1.159 to 11.628; p=0.027). The frequencies of GP VI and GP Ia gene polymorphisms were independent of one another (p=0.836). CONCLUSION: The presence of the GP VI 13254C allele is an independent predictor of premature MI.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the influence of selected factors (possession duration, game quarter, defensive pressure, shooting distance from the basket, and heart rate level) on shooting efficiency on Under-19 (U19) and senior level of women's basketball competition (second division). The analysis procedures included five U19 and six senior-level games, containing 224 and 252 shooting attempts, respectively. Binary logistic regression identified the opponent's defensive pressure and shooting distance from the basket as significant predictors of shooting efficiency in both categories. When defensive pressure was high, the chance for the missed shot was 3.5 (95% CI; 1.43-8.52) and 3.19 (95% CI; 1.4-7.26) times more likely than it was under the minimum defensive pressure for U19 and senior category, respectively. Shooting efficiency significantly decreased when the horizontal distance from the basket increased. In U19, a chance for a missed shot was 4.63 (95% CI; 2-10.712) and 5.15 (95% CI; 1.91-13.86) times higher for medium and long-distance (respectively), compared to short-range shooting. In the senior category, the chance for the missed shot was 3.9 (95% CI; 1.83-8.31) and 3.27 (95% CI; 1.43-7.52) times higher for medium and long-distance (respectively) when compared to a short distance. The possession duration, game quarter, and heart rate level were identified as insignificant predictors. Therefore, the aforementioned findings suggest that basketball players and coaches may benefit from designing training sessions where the defender puts pressure on the shooting player as in a real game situation and balanced the frequency of shooting from different distances from the basket.

BACKGROUND: Oral health strongly affects overall health and is related to many factors. The aim of our study was to analyse oral health related behaviours (OHRBs) and gum bleeding among Slovak adolescents and assess the effect of socioeconomic factors on the outcomes. METHODS: Data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study (HBSC) were used (N = 8896, age range = 10-16 years, M = 13.4; SD = 1.4; 50.9% boys). Sociodemographic and socioeconomic indicators and frequency of OHRBs (dental hygiene, toothbrush changing, preventive check-up) and gum bleeding were collected. Effects of sociodemographic and socioeconomic variables on outcome variables were analysed by binary logistic regression. RESULTS: We found that prevalence of OHRBs slightly decreases with age, and worse outcomes were reported by boys compared to girls (OHRB odds ratio range 0.45-0.75, (95% C.I. range 0.40-0.91), gum bleeding 1.38 (95% C.I. 1.19-1.61), p < 0.05). OHRBs were in most cases significantly associated with socioeconomic variables, lower affluence predicts worse outcomes (odds ratio range 0.76-0.88 (95% C.I. range 0.68-0.96), p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our study provides representative findings on ORHBs in Slovakia and shows important associations of socioeconomic factors related to adolescents' oral health issues.
