Pacientovy názory na bolest vyjadřují, jak si bolest vysvětluje a jak hodnotí, co pro něho bolest znamená. Reprezentují schéma počátečního porozumění a hodnocení bolesti a způsobují individuální rozdíly v přijímání a zpracovávání informací o bolesti a v akceptování léčby. Česká verze Dotazníku názorů na bolest a percepce bolesti (PBPI, Pain Beliefs and Perception Inventory) měří pět dimenzí názorů na bolest: Stálost, Přetrvávání bolesti, Nepochopitelnost, Vlastní zavinění a nově přidanou dimenzi Vina druhých. Psychometrická analýza u tří souborů, které zahrnovaly 188 pacientů s chronickou bolestí, doložila relativně nezávislé a uspokojivě spolehlivé stupnice. Stálost a Přetrvávání bolesti korelují s různými mírami bolesti, s úzkostí a s depresí. PBPI předpověděl 45 procent úbytku Senzorického indexu krátké formy Dotazníku bolesti McGillovy univerzity během hospitalizace v Centru bolesti FN Motol a rozlišoval mezi pacienty akceptujícími multidisciplinární léčbu a pacienty s odmítavým postojem k léčbě.

Pain beliefs represent patients' own conceptualizations of what pain is and what pain means for them. These beliefs represent a pre-existing cognitive pattern and influence initial understanding and evaluation of pain as well as individual differences in processing of new information on pain and differences in treatment compliance. The Czech version of the Pain Beliefs and Perception Inventory measures 5 dimensions of pain beliefs: Constancy, Permanence, Mystery, Self-Blame and a newly added dimension Blame of Others. The psychometric analysis in three samples consisting of 188 chronic pain patients shows relatively uncorrelated factor structure and reliable scales. Permanence and Constancy correlate with different pain measures, anxiety and depression. PBPI predicts a 45 percent decrease of Sensory index of the Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire after hospitalization in the Pain Center and differs between samples of patients with good compliance of pain management and non-compliant patients.
