Pacientovy názory na bolest vyjadřují, jak si bolest vysvětluje a jak hodnotí, co pro něho bolest znamená. Reprezentují schéma počátečního porozumění a hodnocení bolesti a způsobují individuální rozdíly v přijímání a zpracovávání informací o bolesti a v akceptování léčby. Česká verze Dotazníku názorů na bolest a percepce bolesti (PBPI, Pain Beliefs and Perception Inventory) měří pět dimenzí názorů na bolest: Stálost, Přetrvávání bolesti, Nepochopitelnost, Vlastní zavinění a nově přidanou dimenzi Vina druhých. Psychometrická analýza u tří souborů, které zahrnovaly 188 pacientů s chronickou bolestí, doložila relativně nezávislé a uspokojivě spolehlivé stupnice. Stálost a Přetrvávání bolesti korelují s různými mírami bolesti, s úzkostí a s depresí. PBPI předpověděl 45 procent úbytku Senzorického indexu krátké formy Dotazníku bolesti McGillovy univerzity během hospitalizace v Centru bolesti FN Motol a rozlišoval mezi pacienty akceptujícími multidisciplinární léčbu a pacienty s odmítavým postojem k léčbě.
Pain beliefs represent patients' own conceptualizations of what pain is and what pain means for them. These beliefs represent a pre-existing cognitive pattern and influence initial understanding and evaluation of pain as well as individual differences in processing of new information on pain and differences in treatment compliance. The Czech version of the Pain Beliefs and Perception Inventory measures 5 dimensions of pain beliefs: Constancy, Permanence, Mystery, Self-Blame and a newly added dimension Blame of Others. The psychometric analysis in three samples consisting of 188 chronic pain patients shows relatively uncorrelated factor structure and reliable scales. Permanence and Constancy correlate with different pain measures, anxiety and depression. PBPI predicts a 45 percent decrease of Sensory index of the Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire after hospitalization in the Pain Center and differs between samples of patients with good compliance of pain management and non-compliant patients.

Extraction of the meaningful brain activity informationfrom measured signals distorted by various artifacts is a practical problem in electroencephalography (EEG). Eye movements, muscle activity and mechanical and electrical displacements in the measuring apparatus represent typical artefacts. Several methods were developed for removing these artifacts. Two of them - Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) are discussed in this paper. Both ICA and PCA are useful in signal description, optimal feature extraction, and data compression. We would like to show that ICA and PCA could as well effectively separate and remove contamination from a wide variety of artifactual sources in EEG records. Results obtained using ICA with those from PCA are compared.
The present investigation was based on the cephalometric analysis of lateral teleroentgenographic pictures of 48 ten-year-old boys with complete unilateral clefts of the lip and palate. Using cluster and factor analysis, the author investigated the relationships among 75 craniofacial size, shape and position characteristics. Both multivariation methods proved useful in the search for associations between partial cranial structures. They supplemented each other well, and their combined use contributed to the definition of the following basic and specific principles of craniofacial relations and compensatory and adaptive mechanisms in patients with clefts. The maxilla consists of two mutually almost independent parts. The vertical parameters of the anterior upper face are interrelated with the slope of the palate plane; the dentoalveolar component of the upper jaw is formed independently. This fact can be aptly explained by the effect of orthodontic treatment, which contributes substantially to an improvement of the facial configuration. Rotation of the mandible has an impact on the vertical dimensions of the anterior lower, as well as the whole, face and is closely associated with the position of the mandibular body but not with the posi- tion of its branch nor with its length. The slope of the mandibular branch correlates with the mental angle, with the gonial angle and the slope of its dentoalveolar component, which is the result of adaptation to a shortening of the maxilla while preserving a positive overjet. Damage to the sagittal intermaxillary and interalveolar relations is pri- marily due to a reduction in the depth of the maxilla and is associated with the length of the mandibular body, while no relation with its rotation or length of the ramus was found. Solution of the given problem may help to find predictive models of facial development in patients with clefts.
