Antikoagulační farmakoterapie je nejúčinnější prevencí vzniku tromboembolických příhod a zásadně snižuje mortalitu a morbiditu nemocných. Díky této léčbě se snížila incidenci úmrtí a kardioembolizačních příhod u řady pacientů se srdečními i jinými onemocněními. Dlouhou dobu byl jediným perorálním antikoagulačním přípravkem na trhu warfarin. V současné době je z důvodu řady nepříznivých faktorů nahrazován právě novými antikoagulancii ze skupiny přímých inhibitorů trombinu a inhibitorů faktoru Xa.
