Nadrodina stovek blízce příbuzných hemoproteinů, které se nacházejí v celém fylogenetickém spektru, od zvířat, rostlin, hub až po bakterie. Patří sem četné komplexní monooxygenázy (oxygenázy se smíšenou funkcí). U zvířat mají tyto enzymy P-450 dvě hlavní funkce: (1) biosyntéza steroidů, mastných kyselin a žlučových kyselin; (2) účast v metabolismu endogenních a široké škály exogenních substrátů, jako jsou toxiny a léky (biotransformace). Cytochromy P450 se vyskytují v různých formách (izoenzymech, izoformách), které jsou řazeny do genetických rodin a podrodin podle míry (stupně) homologie primární struktury (pořadí aminokyselin) jejich proteinových molekul. Rodina má více než 40 % homologii a značí se číslem za CYP (např. CYP2), podrodina má alespoň 59% homologii a značí se písmenem za předchozím označením rodin (např. CYP2E). A superfamily of hundreds of closely related HEMEPROTEINS found throughout the phylogenetic spectrum, from animals, plants, fungi, to bacteria. They include numerous complex monooxygenases (MIXED FUNCTION OXYGENASES). In animals, these P-450 enzymes serve two major functions: (1) biosynthesis of steroids, fatty acids, and bile acids; (2) metabolism of endogenous and a wide variety of exogenous substrates, such as toxins and drugs (BIOTRANSFORMATION). They are classified, according to their sequence similarities rather than functions, into CYP gene families (>40% homology) and subfamilies (>59% homology). For example, enzymes from the CYP1, CYP2, and CYP3 gene families are responsible for most drug metabolism.
