This article summarizes the subjectively most common causes of lameness in dogs with a focus on the bone base of the limbs, which we may encounter as a common practitioner in a classic surgery. By summarizing the basic orthopedic examination, first-line veterinarians offer help on how to identify the affected limb or how to proceed in the search for the cause of lameness. The reasons summarized here should be handled by any practitioner in the differential diagnosis and should be able to subsequently offer the client other options: whether performing other self-diagnosis, such as X-rays, USG examinations, or diagnostics and solutions in a specialized workplace. The article also offers an outline of conservative or surgical therapy options, or a basis for making a patient’s prognosis. The article does not focus on soft tissues and the spine, which of course can cause lameness on their own or in connection with the bone base, but their diagnosis requires much more specific examination and more expensive diagnostics.
