Two types of nano-scale zero-valent iron (nZVI-B prepared by borohydride reduction and nZVI-T produced by thermal reduction of iron oxide nanoparticles in H2) and a micro-scale ZVI (mZVI) were compared for PCB degradation efficiency in water and soil. In addition, the ecotoxicity of nZVI-B and nZVI-T particles in treated water and soil was evaluated on bacteria, plants, earthworms, and ostracods. All types of nZVI and mZVI were highly efficient in degradation of PCBs in water, but had little degradation effect on PCBs in soil. Although nZVI-B had a significant negative impact on the organisms tested, treatment with nZVI-T showed no negative effect, probably due to surface passivation through controlled oxidation of the nanoparticles.

Nano-scale zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been conceived for cost-efficient degradation of chlorinated pollutants in soil as an alternative to e.g permeable reactive barriers or excavation. Little is however known about its efficiency in degradation of the ubiquitous environmental pollutant DDT and its secondary effects on organisms. Here, two types of nZVI (type B made using precipitation with borohydride, and type T produced by gas phase reduction of iron oxides under H2) were compared for efficiency in degradation of DDT in water and in a historically (>45 years) contaminated soil (24 mg kg(-1) DDT). Further, the ecotoxicity of soil and water was tested on plants (barley and flax), earthworms (Eisenia fetida), ostracods (Heterocypris incongruens), and bacteria (Escherichia coli). Both types of nZVI effectively degraded DDT in water, but showed lower degradation of aged DDT in soil. Both types of nZVI had negative impact on the tested organisms, with nZVI-T giving least adverse effects. Negative effects were mostly due to oxidation of nZVI, resulting in O2 consumption and excess Fe(II) in water and soil.

The WHAM-FTOX model quantifies the combined toxic effects of protons and metal cations towards aquatic organisms through the toxicity function (FTOX), a linear combination of the products of organism-bound cation and a toxic potency coefficient for each cation. We describe the application of the model to predict an observable ecological field variable, species richness of pelagic lake crustacean zooplankton, studied with respect to either acidification or the impacts of metals from smelters. The fitted results give toxic potencies increasing in the order H(+) < Al < Cu < Zn < Ni. In general, observed species richness is lower than predicted, but in some instances agreement is close, and is rarely higher than predictions. The model predicts recovery in agreement with observations for three regions, namely Sudbury (Canada), Bohemian Forest (Czech Republic) and a subset of lakes across Norway, but fails to predict observed recovery from acidification in Adirondack lakes (USA).

Sequential supercritical fluid extraction together with a two-site desorption model were employed to estimate the bioaccessible fraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in four historically contaminated soils. The ecotoxicity of the soils was assayed by four different contact tests. The same soils were exposed to exhaustive extraction and the extracts were returned to the soils to ensure total 100% bioaccessibility of the pollutants. Then the soils were assayed again. Statistical evaluation revealed that the predicted bioaccessible PAHs generally correlated with the ecotoxicity responses of the tests. The estimated bioaccessible fractions varied from 10 to 98%. This value increased for PAHs with higher lipophilicity and showed no correlation with the organic carbon content in the soils. The ecotoxicity tests in the study indicated different sensitivity toward PAHs and the tests employing Heterocypris incongruens and Eisenia fetida were found to be more suitable than Lemna minor and Vibrio fischeri. Mortality and growth inhibition of ostracods correlated with all the types of PAHs and earthworm growth inhibition and mortality were preferentially sensitive to PAHs with only 3-4 aromatic rings. Determination of the biota-soil accumulation factors indicated that the earthworm growth inhibition corresponded to increased accumulation of PAHs in the earthworm tissue.

For the detection of the toxic pollution over real time, so called biological early warning systems (BEWS) were developed. They are devices using living organisms as detectors of toxic pollution and comprising several parts: A water delivery system, an experimental chamber, an electronic or mechanical sensor (camera), from which the data measured are transmitted to an analyzer and alarm system, which will announce the toxicity found. The pollution monitoring is essentially continuous or it is performed repeatedly at very short intervals, time necessary for the detection is reduced to a minimum period, and the pollution detection is non-specific. For purposes of living biological detectors, fish, clams, water fleas and algae are most frequently used. The BEWS instruments were stepwise developed. Immobility or possibly death of the organism tested was first followed and latter applications were aimed at following changes in the behaviour and in physiologic parameters. BEWS are widely used for the on line monitoring of the toxic pollution. They are employed for monitoring the water quality and detection of accidents or deliberate pollution of rivers, following of water quality discharged from production enterprises, factories, waste water treatment plants and for monitoring the health non-harmfulness of water in water supply systems. The target of the work is to present basic data about problems of the BEWS and to make the reader familiar with the principle of the BEWS, with their possibilities and restrictions, with their use, principle of their function and with organisms used for their operation.
