Supervised machine learning (ML) is used extensively in biology and deserves closer scrutiny. The Data Optimization Model Evaluation (DOME) recommendations aim to enhance the validation and reproducibility of ML research by establishing standards for key aspects such as data handling and processing, optimization, evaluation, and model interpretability. The recommendations help to ensure that key details are reported transparently by providing a structured set of questions. Here, we introduce the DOME registry (URL: registry.dome-ml.org), a database that allows scientists to manage and access comprehensive DOME-related information on published ML studies. The registry uses external resources like ORCID, APICURON, and the Data Stewardship Wizard to streamline the annotation process and ensure comprehensive documentation. By assigning unique identifiers and DOME scores to publications, the registry fosters a standardized evaluation of ML methods. Future plans include continuing to grow the registry through community curation, improving the DOME score definition and encouraging publishers to adopt DOME standards, and promoting transparency and reproducibility of ML in the life sciences.

The scarcity of high-quality annotations in many application scenarios has recently led to an increasing interest in devising learning techniques that combine unlabeled data with labeled data in a network. In this work, we focus on the label propagation problem in multilayer networks. Our approach is inspired by the heat diffusion model, which shows usefulness in machine learning problems such as classification and dimensionality reduction. We propose a novel boundary-based heat diffusion algorithm that guarantees a closed-form solution with an efficient implementation. We experimentally validated our method on synthetic networks and five real-world multilayer network datasets representing scientific coauthorship, spreading drug adoption among physicians, two bibliographic networks, and a movie network. The results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed algorithm, where our boundary-based heat diffusion dominates the performance of the state-of-the-art methods.

Additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) is a novel solid-state additive manufacturing technique that circumvents issues of porosity, cracking, and properties anisotropy that plague traditional powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition approaches. However, correlations between process parameters, thermal profiles, and resulting microstructure in AFSD still need to be better understood. This hinders process optimization for properties. This work employs a framework combining supervised machine learning (SML) and physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to predict peak temperature distribution in AFSD from process parameters. Eight regression algorithms were implemented for SML modeling, while four PINNs leveraged governing equations for transport, wave propagation, heat transfer, and quantum mechanics. Across multiple statistical measures, ensemble techniques like gradient boosting proved superior for SML, with the lowest MSE of 165.78. The integrated ML approach was also applied to classify deposition quality from process factors, with logistic regression delivering robust accuracy. By fusing data-driven learning and fundamental physics, this dual methodology provides comprehensive insights into tailoring microstructure through thermal management in AFSD. The work demonstrates the power of bridging statistical and physics-based modeling for elucidating AM process-property relationships.

In this paper, we propose an integrated biologically inspired visual collision avoidance approach that is deployed on a real hexapod walking robot. The proposed approach is based on the Lobula giant movement detector (LGMD), a neural network for looming stimuli detection that can be found in visual pathways of insects, such as locusts. Although a superior performance of the LGMD in the detection of intercepting objects has been shown in many collision avoiding scenarios, its direct integration with motion control is an unexplored topic. In our work, we propose to utilize the LGMD neural network for visual interception detection with a central pattern generator (CPG) for locomotion control of a hexapod walking robot that are combined in the controller based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network. Moreover, we propose self-supervised learning of the integrated controller to autonomously find a suitable setting of the system using a realistic robotic simulator. Thus, individual neural networks are trained in a simulation to enhance the performance of the controller that is then experimentally verified with a real hexapod walking robot in both collision and interception avoidance scenario and navigation in a cluttered environment.

Loss of olfactory function is a typical acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) symptom, at least in early variants of SARS-CoV2. The time that has elapsed since the emergence of COVID-19 now allows for assessing the long-term prognosis of its olfactory impact. Participants (n = 722) of whom n = 464 reported having had COVID-19 dating back with a mode of 174 days were approached in a museum as a relatively unbiased environment. Olfactory function was diagnosed by assessing odor threshold and odor identification performance. Subjects also rated their actual olfactory function on an 11-point numerical scale [0,…10]. Neither the frequency of olfactory diagnostic categories nor olfactory test scores showed any COVID-19-related effects. Olfactory diagnostic categories (anosmia, hyposmia, or normosmia) were similarly distributed among former patients and controls (0.86%, 18.97%, and 80.17% for former patients and 1.17%, 17.51%, and 81.32% for controls). Former COVID-19 patients, however, showed differences in their subjective perception of their own olfactory function. The impact of this effect was substantial enough that supervised machine learning algorithms detected past COVID-19 infections in new subjects, based on reduced self-awareness of olfactory performance and parosmia, while the diagnosed olfactory function did not contribute any relevant information in this context. Based on diagnosed olfactory function, results suggest a positive prognosis for COVID-19-related olfactory loss in the long term. Traces of former infection are found in self-perceptions of olfaction, highlighting the importance of investigating the long-term effects of COVID-19 using reliable and validated diagnostic measures in olfactory testing.

Mobile robots are endeavoring toward full autonomy. To that end, wheeled mobile robots have to function under non-holonomic constraints and uncertainty derived by feedback sensors and/or internal dynamics. Speed control is one of the main and challenging objectives in the endeavor for efficient autonomous collision-free navigation. This paper proposes an intelligent technique for speed control of a wheeled mobile robot using a combination of fuzzy logic and supervised machine learning (SML). The technique is appropriate for flexible leader-follower formation control on straight paths where a follower robot maintains a safely varying distance from a leader robot. A fuzzy controller specifies the ultimate distance of the follower to the leader using the measurements obtained from two ultrasonic sensors. An SML algorithm estimates a proper speed for the follower based on the ultimate distance. Simulations demonstrated that the proposed technique appropriately adjusts the follower robot's speed to maintain a flexible formation with the leader robot.

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was established to quantify diverse cellular characteristics. This technique has been widely used in various species, such as fish, poultry, and humans for compositional analysis. This technology was limited to offline quality assurance/detection of woody breast (WB); however, inline technology that can be retrofitted on the conveyor belt would be more helpful to processors. Freshly deboned (n = 80) chicken breast fillets were collected from a local processor and analyzed by hand-palpation for different WB severity levels. Data collected from both BIA setups were subjected to supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms. The modified BIA showed better detection ability for regular fillets than the probe BIA setup. In the plate BIA setup, fillets were 80.00% for normal, 66.67% for moderate (data for mild and moderate merged), and 85.00% for severe WB. However, hand-held BIA showed 77.78, 85.71, and 88.89% for normal, moderate, and severe WB, respectively. Plate BIA setup is more effective in detecting WB myopathies and could be installed without slowing the processing line. Breast fillet detection on the processing line can be significantly improved using a modified automated plate BIA.

In response to our study, the commentary by Infanti et al. (2024) raised critical points regarding (i) the conceptualization and utility of the user-avatar bond in addressing gaming disorder (GD) risk, and (ii) the optimization of supervised machine learning techniques applied to assess GD risk. To advance the scientific dialogue and progress in these areas, the present paper aims to: (i) enhance the clarity and understanding of the concepts of the avatar, the user-avatar bond, and the digital phenotype concerning gaming disorder (GD) within the broader field of behavioral addictions, and (ii) comparatively assess how the user-avatar bond (UAB) may predict GD risk, by both removing data augmentation before the data split and by implementing alternative data imbalance treatment approaches in programming.

OBJECTIVES: Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning, has significantly impacted healthcare, including dentistry, by improving diagnostics, treatment planning, and prognosis prediction. This systematic mapping review explores the current applications of deep learning in dentistry, offering a comprehensive overview of trends, models, and their clinical significance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following a structured methodology, relevant studies published from January 2012 to September 2023 were identified through database searches in PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. Key data, including clinical purpose, deep learning tasks, model architectures, and data modalities, were extracted for qualitative synthesis. RESULTS: From 21,242 screened studies, 1,007 were included. Of these, 63.5% targeted diagnostic tasks, primarily with convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Classification (43.7%) and segmentation (22.9%) were the main methods, and imaging data-such as cone-beam computed tomography and orthopantomograms-were used in 84.4% of cases. Most studies (95.2%) applied fully supervised learning, emphasizing the need for annotated data. Pathology (21.5%), radiology (17.5%), and orthodontics (10.2%) were prominent fields, with 24.9% of studies relating to more than one specialty. CONCLUSION: This review explores the advancements in deep learning in dentistry, particulary for diagnostics, and identifies areas for further improvement. While CNNs have been used successfully, it is essential to explore emerging model architectures, learning approaches, and ways to obtain diverse and reliable data. Furthermore, fostering trust among all stakeholders by advancing explainable AI and addressing ethical considerations is crucial for transitioning AI from research to clinical practice. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This review offers a comprehensive overview of a decade of deep learning in dentistry, showcasing its significant growth in recent years. By mapping its key applications and identifying research trends, it provides a valuable guide for future studies and highlights emerging opportunities for advancing AI-driven dental care.

This paper deals with the vulnerability of machine learning models to adversarial examples and its implication for robustness and generalization properties. We propose an evolutionary algorithm that can generate adversarial examples for any machine learning model in the black-box attack scenario. This way, we can find adversarial examples without access to model's parameters, only by querying the model at hand. We have tested a range of machine learning models including deep and shallow neural networks. Our experiments have shown that the vulnerability to adversarial examples is not only the problem of deep networks, but it spreads through various machine learning architectures. Rather, it depends on the type of computational units. Local units, such as Gaussian kernels, are less vulnerable to adversarial examples.
