A health educational film on the psychosocial problems of their illness and recovery was viewed by 51 male patients with myocardial infarction. The attractiveness of the topic was tested and found to be high. Reactions elicited by separate messages of the film during the performance were recorded: their rate rose significantly after statements concerning mostly psychosocial aspects of recovery. On behalf of 13 criteria the film was evaluated by the patients medium positively with differences depending on their education. Viewing of the film changed the kind and structure of expressed demands for more health information and made them more concrete.

Human cornea is covered by an aqueous tear film, and the outermost layer of the tear film is coated by lipids. This so-called tear film lipid layer (TFLL) reduces surface tension of the tear film and helps with the film re-spreading after blinks. Alterations of tear lipids composition and properties are related to dry eye syndrome. Therefore, unveiling structural and functional properties of TFLL is necessary for understanding tear film function under both normal and pathological conditions. Key properties of TFLL, such as resistance against high lateral pressures and ability to spread at the tear film surface, are directly related to the chemical identity of TFLL lipids. Hence, a molecular-level description is required to get better insight into TFLL properties. Molecular dynamics simulations are particularly well suited for this task and they were recently used for investigating TFLL. The present review discusses molecular level organization and properties of TFLL as seen by these simulation studies. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: Biosimulations edited by Ilpo Vattulainen and Tomasz Róg.

The effect of viewing a humorous film on salivary testosterone levels and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) values on the back of the neck in 36 elderly healthy people (36 male, mean 70 years) and 36 elderly patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) (36 male, mean age 70 years) were studied. Salivary testosterone levels were decreased while TEWL values were increased in elderly patients with AD compared to those in elderly healthy people. Viewing a humorous film (The Best Bits of Mr. Bean, Universal studios, 1996) slightly, but significantly (P<0.05), elevated salivary testosterone levels and reduced TEWL values in elderly healthy people, while viewing a control non-humorous film (weather information) failed to do so. Similarly, but more pronouncedly, viewing a humorous film markedly elevated salivary testosterone levels and reduced TEWL values in elderly patients with AD, while viewing a control non-humorous film failed to do so. These finding indicate that viewing a humorous film may be useful in the study of testosterone and TEWL, and treatment for dry skin in elderly people with or without AD.

This work proposes a new method for pseudo-3D verification of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) dose distributions. Unlike commercial solutions, it uses measured doses only for gamma evaluation. Its resolution is far better than with electronic detectors within the measured plane and comparable in other directions. It is readily available at clinics because it uses existing resources-a slab phantom and EBT3 films. The method was tested on six IMRT clinical cases. An in-house code for 2D and pseudo-3D gamma analysis was written in MATLAB and compared to OmniPro I'mRT.

In this work, we present a study on reusable thin metal film resistivity-based sensor for direct measurement of binding of thiol containing molecules in liquid samples. While in bulk conductors the DC current is not influenced by the surface events to a measureable degree in a thin metal layer the electrons close to the surface conduct a significant part of electricity and are influenced by the surface interactions. In this study, the thickness of the gold layer was kept below 100 nm resulting in easily measureable resistivity changes of the metal element upon a surface SH-groups binding. No further surface modifications were necessary. Thin film gold layers deposited on a glass substrate by vacuum sputtering were photolithographically structured into four sensing elements arranged in a Wheatstone bridge to compensate for resistance fluctuations due to the temperature changes. Concentrations as low 100 pM provided measureable signals. The surface after the measurement could be electrolytically regenerated for next measurements.

Since 2002, the postal audit in dental radiography has been supplementing standard quality control (QC) tools for dental intraoral X-ray machines. An aim of the audit is to check basic X-ray machine parameters (field size, exposure reproducibility), and a quality of the whole process of diagnostic imaging (entrance surface air-kerma measurement, a check of film processing and an image quality evaluation). The standard QC tests, performed by private companies, check mainly the X-ray unit. Conversely, the audit gives better information about the patient examination practices. During the period of January 2002 to May 2004 approximately 4000 audits were performed. The results confirmed that main problems in dental radiography are due to incorrect film processing, non-optimised setting of the exposure parameters and use of obsolete X-ray machines. Only approximately 30% of performed audits were satisfactory with respect to all checked parameters.

The present investigation studied the physicochemical, mechanical, structural, thermal, and morphological attributes of a novel edible film formed from fenugreek protein concentrate. Films were produced at different pH-9, 10, 11, and 12-and the effect of the pH on the films was studied. As the pH increased, tensile strength increased while water vapor absorption decreased, which is interrelated to the surface morphological properties; as the pH increased, the surface became smoother and compact without any cavities. The films produced were darker in color. Fenugreek protein films exhibited good thermal stability. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed the presence of strong bonding for the films made at alkaline pH. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) indicated the major structure of the film was amorphous. The study demonstrated that the fenugreek protein concentrate film has influential characteristics and can be used as an edible packaging film.

The oxidation of aniline with ammonium peroxydisulfate in the aqueous solution of acetic acid has two subsequent phases: the oxidation of the neutral aniline molecules at low acidity, which was followed by the oxidation of the anilinium cations after the acidity became higher. The final polyaniline film deposited on immersed surfaces is usually contaminated with semi-crystalline oligomers which precipitated during induction period from the reaction medium. To obtain a homogeneous film, which is important in the fabrication of many molecular electronic devices, we have studied the course of aniline oxidation in a view of new experimental evidence. In the unique series of experiments, the silicon or gold supports have been immersed in the reaction mixture at crucial stages of oxidation reaction, and the deposits at the end of the reaction were analyzed. The growth of a highly homogenous film on the gold-coated glass substrate immersed in the reaction mixture at the end of the polymerization period has been observed. The molecular structure of the products was monitored with UV-visible, infrared, and Raman spectroscopies. The possible mechanism of the film formation and the molecular mechanism of the surface interaction of chemisorbed aniline oligomers with gold support are proposed.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to assess changes of tear film osmolarity after micro-incision 25G+ pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) in a prospective study. METHODS: The group consisted of 21 patients (17 women, 4 men) with an average age of 70,52 years [48; 85]. All patients underwent 25G + PPV surgery due to a disorder of the vitreomacular interface (macular hole or epimacular membrane). Only patients who did not use artificial tears before the surgery and who had not been diagnosed with dry eye syndrome at ours or another institution were included in the study. Except cataract surgery, all ocular surface diseases, intraocular diseases, trauma or surgery were exclusion criterias. Tear film osmolarity was measured in both eyes in every patient before surgery, 10 days after surgery and 30 days after surgery. A paired test was used for statistical evaluation. RESULTS: No statistically significant change in osmolarity was found in the operated eyes (p > 0.05). No statistically significant changes in time (p > 0.05) were found when both eyes were compared. There were no postoperative complications or failure to observe the study protocol. CONCLUSION: Micro-incision 25G + PPV does not affect the osmolarity of the tear film.
