Problematika používání psychofarmak u pacientů vyššího věku je poměrně složitá. Určité skupiny psychofarmak jsou ve vyšším věku užívány podstatně častěji než ve věku nižším a středním – farmaka ovlivňující kognitivní funkce (kognitiva) a farmaka používaná proti poruchám paměti (nootropika). U jiných skupin psychofarmak je třeba brát v úvahu jistá omezení – u hypnotik, anxiolytik, antipsychotik a antidepresiv.

The use of psychotherapeutic drugs in senior patients is a relatively complicated issue. Specific groups of psychotherapeutic drugs are used in the senior patients significantly more often than in younger or middle-aged patients, i.e. pharmaceuticals influencing cognitive functions and pharmaceuticals used to improve memory defects. For the use of other drug groups – such as hypnotics, anxiolytics , antipsychotics and antidepressants – certain limitations have to be considered.
