Evropská federace neurologických společností (EFNS) v současné době opioidy doporučuje jako léky druhé až třetí volby u bolestivé diabetické neuropatie, postherpetické neuralgie i centrální neuropatické bolesti. Ze silně analgeticky působících opioidů jsou v léčbě neuropatické bolesti vedle morfinu nejčastěji hodnoceny oxycodon, fentanyl, methadon či buprenorfin. Účinnost oxycodonu ve srovnání s placebem v léčbě neuropatické bolesti byla doložena především ve dvou klinických studiích u pacientů s postherpetickou neuralgií a diabetickou bolestivou polyneuropatií střední až silné intenzity; oxycodon kromě toho patří k nejlépe snášeným opioidům v této indikaci.

The European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS) currently recommends the use of opioids as second- to third- -line drugs in painful diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia as well as in central neuropathic pain. Most commonly evaluated strong opioids in the treatment of neuropathic pain are, besides morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, methadone, and buprenorphine. The efficacy of oxycodone compared to placebo in the treatment of neuropathic pain has been mainly documented in two large clinical trials in patients with postherpetic neuralgia and painful diabetic polyneuropathy causing moderate to severe pain; data support the view that this drug belongs to the group of opioids with most favourable tolerability profile in this indication.
