Zubní kaz je multifaktoriální infekční onemocnění. U kojenců a batolat hrozí vznik časného dětského kazu. Rodiče podceňují preventivní opatření výskytu zubního kazu. Neznají závažné následky pro jejich děti. Hlavní váha péče o zubní dutinu dítěte spočívá právě na rodičích. Rodiče vytvářejí návyky u nejmenších dětí, které si toto odnáší do dalšího období svého života. Cílem příspěvku je shrnout zásady preventivní a praktické péče o chrup u dětí do 3 let.
Tooth decay is a multifactorial infectious disease. Infants and toddlers risk early childhood caries. Parents underestimate the preventive measures of caries. They do not know the serious consequences for their children. The main role of child dental care is played by parents. Parents create the right habits in children who take this to the next period of their lives. The aim of the paper is to summarize the principles of preventive and practical dental care in children under 3 years.

Dentální hygiena je oborem s více než stoletou historií. V České republice ještě na přelo-mu tisíciletí tento pojem byl znám především odborníkům a omezenému okruhu pacien-tů. Řada lidí si neuvědomuje, že dentální hygiena není nadstandardní službou pro vybra-né skupiny pacientů, ale nezbytnou součástí moderní stomatologie. V tomto příspěvku je obor dentální hygieny představen v podobě nejdůležitějších historických milníků oboru, spolu s představením hlavní náplně dentální hygienistky, který má oporu v české legisla-tivě. V závěru jsou představeny perspektivy tohoto oboru.
Dental hygiene is a discipline with over a hundred years of history. At the turn of the millennium, this concept was only known to a handful of patients and professionals in the Czech Republic. Many people are not aware of the fact that dental hygiene is not a pre-mium service for a selected group of patients, but an integral part of current stomatolo-gy. The present article provides an overview of historical milestones in the discipline of dental hygiene and a job description of the profession of dental hygienist as embedded in Czech legislation. Finally, perspectives of the dental hygiene discipline are discussed.
