The main objective of the research was to find out how the use of minimalist and sport footwear influences the type of foot strike pattern in recreational runners. Dynamographic analysis (Pedar-X® system) and high-speed video analysis (Olympus speed i3) were used for monitoring of foot strike pattern. 15 recreational runners were tested (age: 34.6±6.2 years, body weight: 65.10±8.9 kg and body height: 1.81±0.08 m). They were running on an even surface using the same type of minimalist and sport footwear. In addition to the foot strike pattern detection, the CoP trajectory and the duration of the stance and swing phase were analysed. Plantar pressure shifted forward in the group of recreational runners when minimalist footwear was used. The type of foot strike pattern of five runners changed and it shifted one zone forward every time (from the rearfoot to the midfoot or from the midfoot to the forefoot). Moreover, there was a shift forward in plantar pressure when runners, who has been using a forefoot strike in both types of footwear, used minimalist footwear. The stance phase and the entire gait cycle became significantly shorter (p ≤ 0.05) when runners used minimalist footwear. The difference in the duration of the swing phase was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Considering the shorter duration of the stance phase and the plantar pressure shift towards the forefoot when minimalist footwear was used, it can be assumed that the metatarsal area would become potentially more vulnerable to injuries. Furthermore, the change of the position of the ankle joint means that the Achilles tendon would become potentially more vulnerable to injuries as well. Therefore, we recommend to sufficiently strengthen muscles of the foot before using minimalist footwear for longer periods of time.
