BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C infection (HCI) case-finding programmes aim to identify infected persons in a well-defined population. This study assessed the effectiveness of three HCI case-finding programmes for intravenous drug usersBy examining the rate of their referral to antiviral treatment. METHODS: The Hepatology Outpatient Clinic of Szent László Hospital examines and treats all intravenous drug users who are found positive in HCI case-finding programmes inBudapest. The medical records of patients who visited the Hepatology Outpatient Clinic of Szent László HospitalBetween 1 January 2006 and 31 December 2008 were screened and records indicating a history of drug abuse were selected. These records were matched against the databases of the hepatitis case-finding programmes and the records that appeared inBoth datasets were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 234 intravenous drug users identified as hepatitis C virus positive in theBudapest case-finding programmes, only 21 attended the Hepatology Outpatient Clinic of Szent László Hospital and only two started antiviral treatment,But their hepatitis C virus positive status had alreadyBeen known at the time of screening. CONCLUSION: In this study, not a single patient with drug abuse whose hepatitis C virus positive status was identified in one of the HCI case-finding programmes was referred for antiviral treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Organizations engaged in drug addiction treatment started their activities only recently in Hungary. This paper examines the organisational environment in drug outpatient treatment using the example of Blue Point Foundation (BPF), a non-governmental organization (NGO). The authors describe BPF's organizational structure and functioning related to its effectiveness. METHODS: BPF staff members anonymously completed a 59-item questionnaire about its organizational characteristics and functioning. The questionnaire covered demographic data, 50 items of the Quality Control questionnaire and a SWOT (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats) analysis. RESULTS: Policy and strategy were considered BPF's best feature, while the management of funds received the lowest rating. The assessment of the staff and that of the organization as a whole was closer to the midpoint of the scale. DISCUSSION: High risk of staff burnout and unstable organizational environment are the most important threats on the NGOs working in addictology in Hungary.

The abc1(-)/coq8(-) gene deletion respiratory-deficient mutant NBp17 of fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe displayed a phenotypic fermentation pattern with enhanced production of glycerol and acetate, and also possessed oxidative stress-sensitive phenotypes to H(2)O(2), menadione, tBuOOH, Cd(2+), and chromate in comparison with its parental respiratory-competent strain HNT. As a consequence of internal stress-inducing mutation, adaptation processes to restore the redox homeostasis of mutant NBp17 cells were detected in minimal glucose medium. Mutant NBp17 produced significantly increased amounts of O(2)•- and H(2)O(2) as a result of the decreased internal glutathione concentration and the only slightly increased glutathione reductase activity. The Cr(VI) reduction capacity and hence the •OH production ability were decreased. The mutant cells demonstrated increased specific activities of superoxide dismutases and glutathione reductase (but not catalase) to detoxify at least partially the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. All these features may be explained by the decreased redox capacity of the mutant cells. Most notably, mutant NBp17 hyperaccumulated yellow CdS.

OBJECTIVES: Pre-electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) evaluation is an essential part of ECT preparation, a standard treatment in the psychiatric field. However, no routine pre-ECT evaluation has been published so far. This preliminary study aimed to explore different practices in pre-ECT evaluation across European countries. METHODS: The data were collected as a snowball sample approach using an online survey from September 2019 to April 2020. The final analysis included data from 18 clinics placed in 16 European countries. RESULTS: Regulations on the pre-ECT evaluation were found in 9 countries. All clinics reported doing complete blood count, serum electrolytes, and renal function analysis as a part of regular laboratory testing, alongside with a cardiovascular assessment. Ten clinics reported using psychiatric scales. Six clinics reported doing a cognitive assessment, of which all had regulations on the pre-ECT evaluation. Not one evaluation had the same sets of procedures and diagnostics. CONCLUSIONS: The differences in assessment approaches mirror high variability of the pre-ECT evaluation practice across Europe. Cognitive assessment and objectification of psychiatric symptoms should be a regular part of the pre-ECT evaluation because of the monitoring of the most common adverse effect and observing the clinical response to ECT. Standardization of the pre-ECT evaluation and ECT in general would remove criticisms and opposition to the treatment, make it based on the best of our knowledge, and provide a method respectful of patients' best interests and rights.
