The middle colic artery usually arises from the superior mesenteric artery, but in rare cases it may arise from the coeliac trunk or its branches. The aim of this study was to investigate variant origins of the middle colic artery on computed tomography and anatomical dissection. Variant middle colic arteries were identified on computed tomography as part of an ongoing study investigating anatomical variations of vessels of the upper abdomen. Three-dimensional reconstructions were made to demonstrate the variant findings. Cadaveric dissections were performed as part of a routine dissection course. We report five cases of rare variant origins of the middle colic artery arising from the coeliac axis. Among these sites of origin were the coeliac trunk, the gastrosplenic trunk, the splenic artery, and the common hepatic artery. Four cases were identified on multi-detector computed tomography and one in a cadaver. In all cases, the vessels passed posterior to the body of the pancreas before entering the transverse mesocolon. Knowledge of middle colic artery variations is important to prevent inadvertent injury in digestive surgery, especially in the hepatopancreatic area. Variant origins of the middle colic artery are rare, and their knowledge is crucial to prevent unnecessary iatrogenic injury during abdominal surgery.
Substituted catechols include both natural and synthetic compounds found in the environment and foods. Some of them are flavonoid metabolites formed by the gut microbiota which are absorbed afterwards. Our previous findings showed that one of these metabolites, 4-methylcatechol, exerts potent vasorelaxant effects in rats. In the current study, we aimed at testing of its 22 structural congeners in order to find the most potent structure and to investigate the mechanism of action. 3-methoxycatechol (3-MOC), 4-ethylcatechol, 3,5-dichlorocatechol, 4-tert-butylcatechol, 4,5-dichlorocatechol, 3-fluorocatechol, 3-isopropylcatechol, 3-methylcatechol and the parent 4-methylcatechol exhibited high vasodilatory activities on isolated rat aortic rings with EC50s ranging from ∼10 to 24 μM. Some significant sex-differences were found. The most potent compound, 3-MOC, relaxed also resistant mesenteric artery but not porcine coronary artery, and decreased arterial blood pressure in both male and female spontaneously hypertensive rats in vivo without affecting heart rate. It potentiated the vasodilation mediated by cAMP and cGMP, but did not impact L-type Ca2+-channels. By using two inhibitors, activation of voltage-gated potassium channels (KV) was found to be involved in the mechanism of action. This was corroborated by docking analysis of 3-MOC with the KV7.4 channel. None of the most active catechols decreased the viability of the A-10 rat embryonic thoracic aorta smooth muscle cell line. Our findings showed that various catechols can relax vascular smooth muscles and hence could provide templates for developing new antihypertensive vasodilator agents without affecting coronary circulation.

It was suggested that impaired β-adrenergic relaxation in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) might contribute to their high blood pressure (BP). Our study was focused on isoprenaline-induced dilatation of conduit femoral or resistance mesenteric arteries and on isoprenaline-induced BP reduction in SHR and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). We confirmed decreased β-adrenergic relaxation of SHR femoral arteries due to the absence of its endothelium-independent component, whereas endothelium-dependent component of β-adrenergic smooth muscle relaxation was similar in both strains. Conversely, isoprenaline-induced relaxation of resistance mesenteric arteries was similar in both strains and this was true for endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent components. We observed moderately reduced sensitivity of SHR mesenteric arteries to salmeterol (β2-adrenergic agonist) and this strain difference disappeared after endothelium removal. However, there was no difference in mesenteric arteries relaxation by dobutamine (β1-adrenergic agonist) which was independent of endothelium. The increasing isoprenaline doses elicited similar BP decrease in both rat strains, although BP sensitivity to isoprenaline was slightly decreased in SHR. The blockade of cyclooxygenase (indomethacin) and NO synthase (L-NAME) further reduced BP sensitivity to isoprenaline in SHR. On the other hand, salmeterol elicited similar BP decrease in both strains and the blockade of cyclooxygenase and NO synthase increased BP sensitivity to salmeterol in SHR as compared to WKY. In conclusion, attenuated β-adrenergic vasodilatation of conduit arteries of SHR but similar β-adrenergic relaxation of resistance mesenteric arteries from WKY and SHR and their similar BP response to β-adrenergic agonists do not support major role of altered β-adrenergic vasodilatation for high BP in genetic hypertension.

Pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysms are rare visceral artery aneurysms that may be associated with stenosis of the coeliac trunk. We present a case of a 48-year-old woman with a symptomatic aneurysm of the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery caused by occlusion of the coeliac trunk due to median arcuate ligament syndrome. The patient was treated with an aorto-hepatic bypass and excision of the aneurysm. We discuss the case and the complexities and controversies in the treatment of this disease.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The dorsal pancreatic artery is the main artery of the body and tail of the pancreas. Its origin and branching is highly variable. The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis to generate pooled prevalence data on the presence and origin of the dorsal pancreatic artery. Clinically important aspects of the dorsal pancreatic artery were summarised during the literature review. METHODS: Major medical databases were searched. Data on the presence and point of origin of the dorsal pancreatic artery were extracted and quantitatively synthesised. The obtained data of anatomical based studies and computed tomography based studies were statistically analysed. RESULTS: In total, 30 studies, comprising 2322 anatomical and computed tomography based cases were included. The dorsal pancreatic artery was present in 95.8% of cases. It originated from the splenic artery in 37.6% of cases, common hepatic artery in 18.3% of cases, coeliac trunk in 11.9% of cases and the superior mesenteric artery in 23.9% of cases. Other rare origins were present in 2.77% of cases. Multiple dorsal pancreatic arteries were found in 1,7% of cases. There was no significant difference in the presence or origin of the dorsal pancreatic artery between anatomical and computed tomography based studies. CONCLUSION: The dorsal pancreatic artery is present in the vast majority of cases. Its origin and branching are highly variable. Multiplicity of the dorsal pancreatic artery is infrequent.

Exercise training (ET) is well established to induce vascular adaptations on the metabolically active muscles. These adaptations include increased function of vascular potassium channels and enhanced endothelium-dependent relaxations. However, the available data on the effect of ET on vasculatures that normally constrict during exercise, such as mesenteric arteries (MA), are scarce and not conclusive. Therefore, this study hypothesized that 10 weeks of moderate-intensity ET would result in adaptations towards more vasoconstriction or/and less vasodilatation of MA. Young Fischer 344 rats were randomly assigned to a sedentary group (SED; n=24) or exercise training group (EXE; n=28). The EXE rats underwent a progressive treadmill ET program for 10 weeks. Isometric tensions of small (SED; 252.9+/-29.5 microm, EXE; 248.6+/-34.4 microm) and large (SED; 397.7+/-85.3 microm, EXE; 414.0+/-86.95 microm) MA were recorded in response to cumulative phenylephrine concentrations (PE; 0-30 microM) in the presence and absence of the BKCa channel blocker, Iberiotoxin (100 nM). In another set of experiments, tensions in response to cumulative concentration-response curves of acetylcholine (ACh) or sodium nitroprusside (SNP) were obtained, and pEC50s were compared. Immunoblotting was performed to measure protein expression levels of the BKCa channel subunits and eNOS. ET did not alter the basal tension of small and large MA but significantly increased their responses to PE, and reduced the effect of BKCa channels in opposing the contractile responses to PE without changes in the protein expression level of BKCa subunits. ET also elicited a size-dependent functional adaptations that involved reduced endothelium-independent and endothelium-dependent relaxations. In large MA the sensitivity to SNP was decreased more than in small MA suggesting impaired nitric oxide (NO)-dependent mechanisms within the vascular smooth muscle cells of ET group. Whereas the shift in pEC50 of ACh-induced relaxation of small MA would suggest more effect on the production of NO within the endothelium, which is not changed in large MA of ET group. However, the eNOS protein expression level was not significantly changed between the ET and SED groups. In conclusion, our results indicate an increase in contraction and reduced relaxation of MA after 10 weeks of ET, an adaptation that may help shunt blood flow to metabolically active tissues during acute exercise.
Obesity is associated with increased sympathetic nervous system activation, possibly contributing to higher cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between body adiposity and sympathoadrenergic contractions in rat isolated mesenteric arteries, and the modulatory effect of mesenteric perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT). Experiments were performed on male 38-week-old Wistar, Zucker lean (ZL) and Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats. Paired rings of isolated rat superior mesenteric arteries with or without PVAT were prepared and connected to a force-displacement transducer for the recording of isometric tension. Contractile responses were elicited by increasing doses of exogenous noradrenaline and by endogenous noradrenaline released during electrical stimulation of perivascular adrenergic nerves. In ZDF rats, mesenteric PVAT had marked anticontractile effect leading to significant reduction in adrenergic contractions of their superior mesenteric arteries; however, in arterial preparations without PVAT, obese rats showed significantly increased sensitivity in their contractile responses to adrenergic stimulation when compared to other rat groups. In Wistar rats, ranging in the level of body adiposity between ZL and ZDF rats, neurogenic contractions in arterial preparations with preserved PVAT were higher compared to those without PVAT. No vasomodulatory effect of PVAT was detected in mesenteric arteries from ZL rats. The results of this study indicate that the modulatory effect of mesenteric PVAT on arterial adrenergic contractions did not change in proportion with increasing adiposity; however, it could be influenced by the rat strain-specific distribution of sympathetic nerves between PVAT and the proper mesenteric arterial wall. In ZDF rats, characterized by higher vascular sympathetic tone, the mesenteric arteries might be specifically regulated by the anticontractile effect of PVAT, leading to higher mesenteric blood flow. This could be associated with hyperphagia and increased nutrient-induced mesenteric vasodilatation in this rat strain.
