In the paper, we understand social capital as a variable that affects the quality of life. A variable whose change affects another variable is called a predictor. The paper is based on Putnam's understanding of social capital with the dimensions of trust, norms and networks. Trust is considered the most important dimension, and for the purposes of the paper social capital is identified with trust. Quality of life is a holistic concept with two dimensions expressing an assessment of satisfaction with life. After society became richer-in the 1960's in the West and, after the collapse of the bipolar world, also in Central and Eastern Europe-the need for quantity was replaced by the need for quality. The paper is focused on Czechia, with social capital as a predictor of quality of life being investigated geographically at the level of districts. According to the research hypothesis, social capital will have a strong influence on the quality of life of residents in Czechia, i.e., it will be its predictor. To test the validity of the research hypothesis, research was conducted. The aim of the paper is to outline the epistemology of social capital from the aspect of quality of life, description of quality of life and then to test the validity of the research hypothesis by measurements. The result of the quantification of social capital and quality of life at the level of districts and their correlation is important from an epistemological point of view for two reasons. The first is to question the generally accepted premise of the position of social capital as a strong predictor of quality of life. The second is the recognition that the premise of the position of social capital as a strong predictor of quality of life applies in the districts with the highest quality of life.

Species distribution models (SDMs) are valuable tools for assessing species' responses to environmental factors and identifying areas suitable for their survival. The careful selection of input variables is critical, as their interactions and correlations with other environmental factors can affect model performance. This study evaluates the influence of climate and soil variables on the performance of SDMs for 5033 Australian terrestrial vascular plant species, representing the largest phylogenetic diversity of native flora assessed in such an analysis. Using an ensemble of correlative models, we assessed the predictive performance of climate and soil variables, individually and in combination, across four distinct ecoregions: Desert (n = 640 species), Mediterranean (n = 1246), Temperate (n = 1936), and Tropical (n = 1211). Our results demonstrate that on a continental scale, climate variables have a greater influence on plant distributions than soil variables. Although incorporating soil and climate variables enhanced model performance in some ecoregions, our results indicate that relying solely on small-scale variables such as soil may increase the likelihood of underfitting. The most influential predictor variables in the models varied across ecoregions and between specialist and generalist species. Mean annual rainfall (bio1) was consistently a strong climate predictor variable across ecoregions, but other climate variables became more important when analyses were restricted to ecoregion-specific species (i.e., specialists). Soil organic carbon (SOC) was the most important soil variable in the Temperate and Tropical ecoregions across generalist and specialist species. In the Mediterranean ecoregion, clay content (CLY) became more important than SOC when analyses were restricted to ecoregion-specific species, whereas nitrogen total organic (NTO) was consistently the strongest predictor soil variable for plants in the Desert. Our findings have significant implications for understanding the interplay between climate, soil, and plant distribution within diverse ecoregions. This study serves as a foundation for developing more accurate SDM predictions.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate risk factors for placental abruption and to determine if anamnestic variables such as inherited thrombosis or recurrent fetal loss might be used as a predictor for placental abruption. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study at the University Hospital, Palacky University, Olomouc, Czech Republic. One hundred and eighty women with placental abruptio out of 20,175 deliveries (0.79 %) who were compared to 196 unselected pregnant women. A detailed anamnesis was taken. RESULTS: Compared to controls, women with placental abruptio had a 12-fold increased prevalence of prior recurrent fetal loss and a 6-fold increased prevalence of inherited thrombosis. CONCLUSIONS: We found that recurrent fetal loss, and inherited thrombosis may be significant risk factors for placental abruptio.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is a disease with up-regulated expression of the transmembrane tyrosine-protein kinase ROR1, a member of the Wnt/planar cell polarity pathway. In this study, we identified COBLL1 as a novel interaction partner of ROR1. COBLL1 shows clear bimodal expression with high levels in chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients with mutated IGHV and approximately 30% of chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients with unmutated IGHV. In the remaining 70% of chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients with unmutated IGHV, COBLL1 expression is low. Importantly, chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients with unmutated IGHV and high COBLL1 have an unfavorable disease course with short overall survival and time to second treatment. COBLL1 serves as an independent molecular marker for overall survival in chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients with unmutated IGHV. In addition, chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients with unmutated IGHV and high COBLL1 show impaired motility and chemotaxis towards CCL19 and CXCL12 as well as enhanced B-cell receptor signaling pathway activation demonstrated by increased PLCγ2 and SYK phosphorylation after IgM stimulation. COBLL1 expression also changes during B-cell maturation in non-malignant secondary lymphoid tissue with a higher expression in germinal center B cells than naïve and memory B cells. Our data thus suggest COBLL1 involvement not only in chronic lymphocytic leukemia but also in B-cell development. In summary, we show that expression of COBLL1, encoding novel ROR1-binding partner, defines chronic lymphocytic leukemia subgroups with a distinct response to microenvironmental stimuli, and independently predicts survival of chronic lymphocytic leukemia with unmutated IGHV.

This article focuses on the relationship between the time perspective (TP) personality trait and massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) playing. We investigate the question of frequency of playing. The TP was measured with Zimbardo's TP Inventory (ZTPI), which includes five factors-past negative, past positive, present hedonistic, present fatalistic, and future. The study used data from 154 MMORPG players. We demonstrated that TP partially explained differences within a group of players with respect to the frequency of playing. Significant positive correlations were found between present factors and the amount of time spent playing MMORPGs, and significant negative correlation was found between the future factor and the time spent playing MMORPGs. Our study also revealed the influence of future-present balance on playing time. Players who scored lower in future-present balance variables (their present score was relatively high compared with their future score) reported higher values in playing time. In contrast to referential studies on TP and drug abuse and gambling, present fatalistic TP was demonstrated to be a stronger predictor of extensive playing than present hedonistic TP, which opened the question of motivation for playing. The advantage of our study compared with other personality-based studies lies in the fact that TP is a stable but malleable personality trait with a direct link to playing behavior. Therefore, TP is a promising conceptual resource for excessive playing therapy.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate hospital, unit and staff variables as the correlates of missed nursing care (MNC) in Czech hospitals. BACKGROUND: There is a considerable variability in patterns of MNC across different hospital, unit and staff characteristics. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted. The STROBE guidelines for reporting observational studies were followed for reporting of the research study. METHODS: A sample of 513 nurses working in nine acute care hospitals was recruited. MNC activities were measured with the MISSCARE Survey. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and univariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Type of unit was confirmed as a significant predictor of MNC. Staff characteristics (nurses' work position, level of education and perceived adequacy of unit staff) and hospital variables did not contribute significantly to MNC. CONCLUSIONS: The study replicated the patterns of MNC across different conceptual approaches. MNC was influenced by work environment characteristics rather than individual staff variables. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The results of this research showed that missed nursing care is influenced by work environment characteristics rather than individual staff variables.

BACKGROUND: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is recognized as the major cause of focal intractable epilepsy in childhood. Various factors influencing postsurgical seizure outcome in pediatric patients with FCD have been reported. OBJECTIVE: To analyze different variables in relation to seizure outcome in order to identify prognostic factors for selection of pediatric patients with FCD for epilepsy surgery. METHODS: A cohort of 149 patients with histologically confirmed mild malformations of cortical development or FCD with at least 2 years of postoperative follow-up was retrospectively studied; 113 subjects had at least 5 years of postoperative follow-up. Twenty-eight clinical, EEG, MRI, neuropsychological, surgical, and histopathologic parameters were evaluated. RESULTS: The only significant predictor of surgical success was completeness of surgical resection, defined as complete removal of the structural MRI lesion (if present) and the cortical region exhibiting prominent ictal and interictal abnormalities on intracranial EEG. Unfavorable surgical outcomes are mostly caused by overlap of dysplastic and eloquent cortical regions. There were nonsignificant trends toward better outcomes in patients with normal intelligence, after hemispherectomy and with FCD type II. Other factors such as age at seizure onset, duration of epilepsy, seizure frequency, associated pathologies including hippocampal sclerosis, extent of EEG and MRI abnormalities, as well as extent and localization of resections did not influence outcome. Twenty-five percent of patients changed Engel's class of seizure outcome after the second postoperative year. CONCLUSIONS: The ability to define and fully excise the entire region of dysplastic cortex is the most powerful variable influencing outcome in pediatric patients with focal cortical dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: The current study aims at better characterizing the role of reading skills as a predictor of comprehension of relative clauses. Well-established cross-linguistic evidence shows that children are more accurate in the comprehension of subject-extracted relative clauses in comparison to the object-extracted counterpart. Children with reading difficulties are known to perform less accurately on object relatives at the group level compared to typically developing children. Given that children's performance on reading tasks is shown to shape as a continuum, in the current study we attempted to use reading skills as a continuous variable to predict performance on relative clauses. METHODS: We examined the comprehension of relative clauses in a group of 30 English children (7-11 years) with varying levels of reading skills. Reading skills varied on a large spectrum, from poor readers to very skilled readers, as assessed by the YARC standardized test. The experimental task consisted of a picture-matching task. Children were presented with subject and object relative clauses and they were asked to choose one picture - out of four - that would best represent the sentence they heard. At the same time, we manipulated whether the subject and object nouns were either matching (both singular or both plural) or mismatching (one singular, the other plural) in number. RESULTS: Our analysis of accuracy shows that subject relatives were comprehended more accurately overall than object relatives, that responses to sentences with noun phrases mismatching in number were more accurate overall than the ones with matching noun phrases and that performance improved as a function of reading skills. Within the match subset, while the difference in accuracy between subject and object relatives is large in poor readers, the difference is reduced with better reading skills, almost disappearing in very skilled readers. DISCUSSION: Beside replicating the well-established findings on the subject-object asymmetry, number facilitation in the comprehension of relative clauses, and a better overall performance by skilled readers, these results indicate that strong reading skills may determine a reduction of the processing difficulty associated with the hardest object relative clause condition (i.e., match), causing a reduction of the subject-object asymmetry.

The recently proposed always stable predictor-corrector method for molecular dynamics of polarizable molecules [J. Kolafa, J. Comput. Chem. 25, 335 (2004)] is rewritten in the Gear formalism. This equivalent form simplifies an implementation if the Newton equations of motion are integrated by the Gear method and also enables a variable integration step. Algorithms are presented for both the original and new versions and tested on a pair of polarizable ions exhibiting anharmonic vibrations.

BACKGROUND: The endoscopically implanted duodenal-jejunal bypass liner (DJBL) is an attractive alternative to bariatric surgery for obese diabetic patients. This article aims to study dynamical aspects of the glycaemic profile that may influence DJBL effects. METHODS: Thirty patients underwent DJBL implantation and were followed for 10 months. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) was performed before implantation and at month 10. Dynamical variables from CGM were measured: coefficient of variation of glycaemia, mean amplitude of glycaemic excursions (MAGE), detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), % of time with glycaemia under 6.1 mmol/L (TU6.1), area over 7.8 mmol/L (AO7.8) and time in range. We analysed the correlation between changes in both anthropometric (body mass index, BMI and waist circumference) and metabolic (fasting blood glucose, FBG and HbA1c) variables and dynamical CGM-derived metrics and searched for variables in the basal CGM that could predict successful outcomes. RESULTS: There was a poor correlation between anthropometric and metabolic outcomes. There was a strong correlation between anthropometric changes and changes in glycaemic tonic control (∆BMI-∆TU6.1: rho = - 0.67, P < .01) and between metabolic outcomes and glycaemic phasic control (∆FBG-∆AO7.8: r = .60, P < .01). Basal AO7.8 was a powerful predictor of successful metabolic outcome (0.85 in patients with AO7.8 above the median vs 0.31 in patients with AO7.8 below the median: Chi-squared = 5.67, P = .02). CONCLUSIONS: In our population, anthropometric outcomes of DJBL correlate with improvement in tonic control of glycaemia, while metabolic outcomes correlate preferentially with improvement in phasic control. Assessment of basal phasic control may help in candidate profiling for DJBL implantation.
