Older adults with cancer experience are more likely to encounter a notable reduction of participation in physical and social leisure activities, which may threaten their overall well-being. The purpose of this study was to explore how specific types of leisure activities and leisure satisfaction were linked to hedonic and eudaimonic well-being among older adults who had experienced cancer. A nationally representative sample of 2,934 older adults with lifetime cancer experience was retained from the Health and Retirement Study. The results of regression analysis revealed that walking for 20 minutes was reported as the only type of leisure activity related to hedonic well-being for the oldest-old (85+ years old). The current study also found that TV watching was significantly, but negatively associated with eudaimonic well-being for the young-old (50-74 years of age). In contrast, using a computer was positively linked to hedonic and eudaimonic well-being among the young-old and old-old (75-84 years of age). The current study made a significant contribution to build the body of knowledge that the different age groups of older adults who had experienced cancer can enhance eudaimonic and hedonic well-being by participating in different types of leisure activities. Implications for further research are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Satisfaction with the birth experience has been established to be critical for the wellbeing of the mother. The Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R) is a brief and psychometrically robust multi-dimensional self-report tool designed to assess birth experience. The current investigation sought to translate and validate a Czech Republic version of the BSS-R (CZ-BSS-R). METHODS: Following translation psychometric assessment of the CZ-BSS-R was undertaken using a cross-sectional design. A between-subjects design was incorporated in order to evaluate known-groups validity evaluation of the translated measure. Four hundred and sixty-five Czech-speaking women within the Czech Republic took part in the study. Confirmatory factor analysis was undertaken and divergent and convergent validity and internal consistency characteristics also evaluated. RESULTS: The CZ-BSS-R was observed to have excellent psychometric properties and conceptually and measurement faithful to the original English-language measure. Consistent with previous investigations using the BSS-R significant differences were found in scores as a function of delivery type. CONCLUSIONS: The CZ-BSS-R is a valid, robust and reliable measure of birth experience and suitable for use with Czech-speaking women in the Czech Republic. The study highlighted that instrument and emergency Caesarean section were associated with a lower level of birth satisfaction compared to vaginal delivery.

BACKGROUND: In the assessment of healthcare processes focusing on the quality of care provided, patient satisfaction is an important indicator that healthcare providers may use for future setting of healthcare and preventing adverse events. The study aimed to determine satisfaction with nursing care among hospital inpatients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample comprised 14 023 patients staying in medical and surgical wards of 14 acute care hospitals in the Czech Republic in 2019-2020. Data were collected using the Patient Satisfaction Scale, a standardized tool containing 11 items in 3 subscales. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and correlation analysis (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient). RESULTS: Overall, patients reported high satisfaction with nursing care (M = 3.57). Patients were most satisfied with how their technical/rational needs were met (M = 3.57); the least satisfaction was identified in the domain of information needs (M = 3.53). Patients who perceived their health as good (47%) or very good (18%) showed high satisfaction scores (M = 3.77 and M = 3.73, respectively). High scores were also achieved for patients with secondary (M = 3.58) and tertiary (M = 3.59) education, those whose admission was planned (M = 3.59) and those staying in large hospitals (M = 3.60). There were no differences in satisfaction with regard to gender (p = 0.755) and the COVID-19 pandemic (p = 0.190). CONCLUSIONS: Patients' satisfaction with care provided is a highly significant parameter of healthcare quality. It is influenced by a number of aspects which, if adequately defined, may aid in improving the quality of care. Med Pr Work Health Saf. 2023;74(6):461-8.

Despite robust research evidence for the role of attractive-body portrayals in body image, the effect of positive appearance comments that endorse them on social media remains unclear. Therefore, using a between-subject experimental design and the data from 613 Czech adolescents (52% girls) aged 13-18 (M = 15.5, SD = 1.7), the present study examined exposure to positive appearance comments on body dissatisfaction, and the moderating roles of media-ideal internalization, appearance schematicity, body appreciation, and gender. Our data supported the presumed intensifying effect of the positive appearance comments on post-exposure body dissatisfaction, but only for adolescent girls. The impact of positive comments was not moderated by the media-ideal internalization, appearance schematicity, or body appreciation. However, the exploratory results showed that the displayed bodies' perceived attractiveness intensified the positive comments' effect on body dissatisfaction, which makes it a potentially important factor to target for the prevention of negative social media effects on body image. Furthermore, the individual characteristics that moderated the exposure to attractive images in the prior research may not determine the effects of the positive comments. Future research may need to capture factors that specifically influence the processing of such comments, such as susceptibility to peer feedback on physical appearance.

The negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and distance education has significantly affected adolescents' lives. The restrictive policies negatively affected their physical and mental health and life satisfaction. It is therefore desirable to look for ways to eliminate similar negative impacts on adolescents in the future. This study aimed to identify the differences in the association between physical activity and life satisfaction in Polish adolescents before and during the pandemic. The study included 1541 participants (891 before the pandemic and 650 during the pandemic) aged 15-19 years. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Long Form questionnaire was used to assess physical activity, and the Bern Subjective Well-Being Questionnaire was used to evaluate life satisfaction. The objectivity of data collection and analysis before and during the pandemic was ensured by the web application the International Database for Research and Educational Support. During the pandemic, we found lower physical activity and life satisfaction in both boys and girls compared to before the pandemic. Girls with low and high physical activity levels showed significantly lower life satisfaction during the pandemic than they did before. Low life satisfaction was associated with lower physical activity, and high life satisfaction was associated with greater total physical activity. Both boys and girls with low and high life satisfaction achieved significantly fewer physical activity recommendations during the pandemic. High life satisfaction increased the likelihood of meeting the recommendations for physical activity before and during the pandemic. This study provides new insights into the differences and associations between life satisfaction and physical activity in adolescent boys and girls before and during the pandemic. It provides suggestions for the prevention of possible future restrictions in the school settings. Support for post-pandemic life satisfaction in adolescents should focus mainly on increasing vigorous physical activity and improving adolescent participation in organized physical activity settings.

The study contributes to program design and evaluation practice in outdoor environmental education by identifying instructional strategies crucial for student satisfaction. Student satisfaction is a major factor in the overall success of outdoor environmental education programs. While the impact of these programs on student knowledge, attitudes, and behavior has been assessed often, student satisfaction has been subject of much less research. This study analyzes student satisfaction with four outdoor environmental education programs in the Czech Republic. The authors collected qualitative (N = 68) and quantitative (N = 323) data from the program participants after they had completed their respective programs. According to the results, the students appreciate a clearly defined program with meaningful activities. Also important is the role of the program leader and the students' having the opportunity to influence the activities during their free time in the program. Student satisfaction can in some cases be decreased by challenging weather and by demanding social interactions with their peers.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of life satisfaction of older people using standardised tools can play a crucial role in evaluating the effectiveness of policy measures aimed at mitigating the effects of population aging. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to verify the psychometric properties of the Czech version of a 12-item scale (the Life Satisfaction Index for the Third Age) for older people living in the community. METHODS: The research involved 1113 older people from the Moravian-Silesian Region over 60 years of age living in a home environment. For the newly created Czech version of LSITA-SF12, we tested validity (construct validity and convergent validity) and reliability (internal consistency). RESULTS: We confirmed a single-factor model for the LSITA-SF12 scale (χ2 = 71.33, p < .001, CFI = 0.995, TLI = 0.994, RMSEA = 0.065, SRMR = 0.056, GFI = 0.999) by confirmatory factor analysis and load factor analysis (values of explorations ≥0.45). The internal consistency of the scale was satisfactory (α = 0.878). Furthermore, there was a medium correlation rate (r = 0.592; p < .001) between the overall score of the LSITA-SF and quality-of-life score (OPQoL-Brief). CONCLUSIONS: We found the Czech version of the LSITA-SF12 questionnaire to have satisfactory psychometric properties. The questionnaire is suitable for use in research and clinical practice to evaluate the effectiveness of preventive measures. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov. PRS Protocol Registration and Results System; NCT05637177. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE: The LSITA_SF12 questionnaire can beadministered by a community gerontological nurse and can be used in clinicalpractice and research.

PURPOSE: To describe clinical visual outcomes, spectacle independence, and patient satisfaction after cataract surgery with blending implantation of ReSTOR (Alcon laboratories) multifocal intraocular lenses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A single-arm, non-randomized prospective study assessed patients undergoing cataract surgery with ReSTOR® +2.50 intraocular lens in the dominant eye and +3.00 add in the fellow eye between January 2015 to January 2020. RESULTS: In total, 47 patients (94 eyes) were enrolled, 28 women and 19 men. The average age at surgery time was 64 ±8 years, average postoperative follow-up was 45.4 ±7.0 months, with a minimum of 18.9 months. Postoperative binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was on average 0.07 logMar (Snellen 20/24), uncorrected binocular intermediate visual acuity at 65 cm was 0.07 logMar (20/24), uncorrected binocular near visual acuity at 40 cm was 0.06 logMar (20/23). Contrast sensitivity under photopic and scotopic conditions, with and without glare, remained at the upper limit of normality. 98% of patients were quite satisfied or very satisfied. 87% did not require glasses for any activities, either at distant vision, nor at near vision. CONCLUSIONS: Cataract surgery with ReSTOR® IOL blended vision showed medium-term satisfactory visual results, achieving spectacle independence and a high level of satisfaction.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the life satisfaction of older people living in a home environment and to find out what predictors influence it. METHODS: The research involved 1,121 older people 60 years and above from the Moravian-Silesian region who live in a home environment. The short form of the Life Satisfaction Index for the Thirds Age (LSITA-SF12) was used to assess life satisfaction. The Geriatric depression scale (GDS-15), the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory Scale (GAI), The Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-13), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) were used to evaluate related factors. In addition, age, gender, marital status, education, social support, and subjective health assessment were evaluated. RESULTS: The overall life satisfaction score was found to be 36.34 (s = 8.66). The satisfaction of older people was classified into four grades: high satisfaction (15.2%), moderate satisfaction (60.8%), moderate dissatisfaction (23.4%), and high dissatisfaction (0.6%). The predictors of the longevity of the lives of older people were confirmed, both health factors (subjective health assessment, anxiety, and depression [Model 1: R = 0.642; R2 = 0.412; p<0.000]) and psychosocial factors (quality of life, self-esteem, sense of coherence, age, and social support [Model 2: R = 0.716; R2 = 0.513; p<0.000]). CONCLUSION: In implementing policy measures, these areas should be emphasized. The availability of educational and psychosocial activities (e.g. reminiscence therapy, music therapy, group cognitive behavioural therapy, cognitive rehabilitation) within the community care of the older people and university of third age is appropriate to increase the life satisfaction of the older people. An initial depression screening is also required as part of preventive medical examinations to ensure early diagnosis and treatment of depression.

Timely and accurate assessments of the factors influencing satisfaction, a key indicator of success in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA), may help improve TKA outcomes. Here we performed the longitudinal trend analysis of relation between satisfaction and 12 postoperative factors, which positively or negatively influence the patient satisfaction 2 years after TKA. In a real-world registry cohort (women/men: 1121/650), we showed similarities and differences between women and men in the contribution of postoperative factors to satisfaction 2 years after TKA as assessed by odds-ratio-similarity network. In men, the strongest negative factors were pain and complications, followed by mechanical problems. In women, the strongest negative factors were the pain and knee instability, followed by other mechanical problems, complications and low levels of sports activity. In both sexes, physical activity and the Knee Society Score (general and functional) influenced positively satisfaction; long-distance walking was associated with satisfaction only in women. A trend analysis revealed a reduction in the strength of satisfaction-related factors over 2 years of check-ups, particularly in women. Our study demonstrates that the key check-up for assessing the evolution of satisfaction in the 2 years after TKA was at 3 months in both sexes.
