Based on research findings on the experience of homeless people living in shelters with the use of health care services, this article shows how oppression can negatively affect the access of the homeless to health care. The acquired data shows that oppression associated with the status of a shelter user creates barriers to health care access - and not only in terms of financial barriers. In their narratives, the communication partners verbalized the oppression by doctors, other health care staff and patients. The aim of this paper is, on the basis of partial data from research, to discuss the possibilities of using anti-oppressive social work as a way to reduce the barriers to access to health care services in a given target group. The output of our article consists of proposed implications for social work practice.

Sběr dat probíhal technikou hloubkových polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, pozorováním a dvou fokusních skupin s lidmi žijícími s HIV/AIDS. Analýza dat využila metodu sociálně konstrukcionistické zakotvené teorie popsané K. Charmaz a bylo do ní zahrnuto celkem 11 výpovědí lidí žijících s HIV/AIDS a 2 významných druhých.
The issue of HIV/AIDS is on the front burner in the Czech Republic because the number of newly diagnosed cases has been rising dramatically. One of the essential problems is late diagnosis of the disease. Another typical trend is longer life expectancy for those with HIV, including people with HIV who live to retirement age or start a family. HIV/AIDS is considered to be a so-called stigmatizing disease. In this context, there is no scientific evidence of the social impacts of the disease that could serve as a basis for social assistance provided to this target group. This article offers partial results of a qualitative research conducted in 2016. It deals with the phenomenon of stigmatization from the perspective of people living with HIV/AIDS in the Czech Republic, and considers it to be a social consequence of HIV-positivity. Data collection was based on the techniques of an in-depth semi-structured interview, observation, and two focus groups with people living with HIV/AIDS. Data analysis made use of the method of social constructionist grounded theory (described by K. Charmaz) and altogether it comprised 11 testimonies of people living with HIV/AIDS and 2 other relevant persons. The research results (which are framed by Goffman’s theory of stigma) proved that stigmatization is a key issue for the respondents and that in their opinion, stigma related to HIV/AIDS significantly affects the lives of HIV-positive people.

Ambicí autorek je prostřednictvím výsledků realizované přehledové studie na témata zdraví obyvatel a obyvatelek azylových domů a jejich přístupu ke zdravotním službám vnést tuto problematiku do oblasti zájmu sociální práce. Svou pozornost zaměřily autorky především na fyzické a psychické zdraví osob v azylových domech, zdraví žen z azylových domů a možnosti využívání zdravotnických služeb osobami žijícími v azylových domech. Autorky chtějí upozornit na potřebu tvorby komplexní podkladové analýzy v oblasti zdraví obyvatel azylových domů v České republice pro účely rozvoje sociální práce a sociálních služeb určených této cílové skupině.
Through the results of a scope study carried out on the topics of public health, the health of shelter users and their access to health service, the authors hope to bring these issues more into the sphere of interest of social work. The authors focused their attention primarily on the physical and mental health of people in shelters; the health of women in shelters, and the health care service available to people living in shelters. Therefore, the authors want to draw attention to the need to carry out a comprehensive background analysis in the area of shelter users’ health in the Czech Republic.
