A highly effective way to improve the prognosis of viral infectious diseases is early detection of antibodies to various viral pathogens in biological fluids. Among a wide range of viral pathogens, tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) attracts a special attention. This work reports a comparison between two bioanalytical methods (enzyme‑linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and voltammetric immunoassay) to determine antibodies to TBEV in a human blood serum. In these assays, the detected molecule binds to the conjugate which is labelled with enzyme (in ELISA) or silver nanoparticles (in voltammetric immunoassay). In the ELISA, the signal corresponding to a colour-producing substrate (3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine) through an enzymatic reaction is detected using a spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 450 nm. In the electrochemical immunoassay, the signal is read by the linear sweep anodic stripping voltammetry (LSASV) of silver ions (through the electrochemical stripping of accumulated elemental silver) on a graphite composite electrode. The results of both measurements demonstrated that signals increased with the increasing concentration of the target antibodies to TBEV within the range from 100 to 1600 IU mL–1. Detection limits for ELISA and voltammetric assay were 30 and 90 IU mL–1, respectively. The practical application of both immunoanalytical approaches has been verified by determining the amount of antibodies to TBEV in the human blood serum. The obtained results clearly showed an excellent agreement between the detected concentration values of antibodies to TBEV obtained by the electrochemical method and by the standard ELISA method.
Homovanillic (HVA), vanillylmandelic (VMA), and 5-hydroxy-3-indoleacetic acid (HIAA) are cancer biomarkers and their abnormally high urinary levels can serve as a useful tool for prediction of neuroblastoma, pheochromocytoma, and carcinoid tumors. HVA and VMA are connected with the catecholamine metabolism, while HIAA is related to the tryptophan metabolism. The aim of this review is to describe the electrochemical oxidation HVA, VMA, and HIAA and summarize published voltammetric and amperometric methods suitable for the determination of these biomarkers in various biological fluids.
This review is focused on genotoxic 2-nitrofluorene, which is a marker for the presence of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and summarizes the current knowledge about the negative effects of 2-nitrofluorene and its metabolites on living organisms, especially on their DNA. These findings obtained via in vivo investigations are compared with information obtained using electrochemical DNA biosensors, which represent very promising in vitro alternative to the study of processes proceeding in living organisms during the interaction of their DNA with various xenobiotic compounds.

Silver amalgam has found broad spectrum of applications in electroanalytical chemistry as the most suitable alternative electrode material to metallic mercury. It has been used in a wide range of voltammetric and amperometric methods for detection of inorganic and organic compounds in various forms of working and reference electrodes or biosensors. This review briefly summarizes innovative applications of silver amalgam in last 15 years and discusses possibilities and perspectives of further utilization of this exceptional material in electroanalysis.

Optimum conditions were found for the determination of nanomolar and subnanomolar concentrations of genotoxic 2-aminofluoren-9-one (2-AFN) by adsorptive stripping differential pulse voltammetry (AdSDPV) at a hanging mercury drop minielectrode (HMDmE) after preliminary separation and preconcentration by solidphase extraction (SPE) in LiChrolut RP-18 E (500 mg) columns. The adsorbed analyte was eluted with acetone, the solution then evaporated to dryness, and the residue dissolved in acetate buffer (pH 4.0) (AcB). A sample was then measured by AdSDPV at the HMDmE, with the accumulation potential 100 mV (vs. Ag|AgCl in 1 mol l–1 KCl) and the accumulation time 120 s. Linear calibration curves were obtained for 2·10–11 – 1·10–9 mol l–1 2-AFN, with the limit of quantification (LQ) ≈ 4·10–11 mol l–1. The method was verified by the determination of 2-AFN in model samples of drinking and river water at concentrations 4·10–11 – 1·10–9 and 2·10–10 – 1·10–9 mol l–1 (LQ ≈ 6·10–11 and 4·10–10 mol l–1, respectively).
