Bats host many viruses pathogenic to humans, and increasing evidence suggests that rotavirus A (RVA) also belongs to this list. Rotaviruses cause diarrheal disease in many mammals and birds, and their segmented genomes allow them to reassort and increase their genetic diversity. Eighteen out of 2,142 bat fecal samples (0.8%) collected from Europe, Central America, and Africa were PCR-positive for RVA, and 11 of those were fully characterized using viral metagenomics. Upon contrasting their genomes with publicly available data, at least 7 distinct bat RVA genotype constellations (GCs) were identified, which included evidence of reassortments and 6 novel genotypes. Some of these constellations are spread across the world, whereas others appear to be geographically restricted. Our analyses also suggest that several unusual human and equine RVA strains might be of bat RVA origin, based on their phylogenetic clustering, despite various levels of nucleotide sequence identities between them. Although SA11 is one of the most widely used reference strains for RVA research and forms the backbone of a reverse genetics system, its origin remained enigmatic. Remarkably, the majority of the genotypes of SA11-like strains were shared with Gabonese bat RVAs, suggesting a potential common origin. Overall, our findings suggest an underexplored genetic diversity of RVAs in bats, which is likely only the tip of the iceberg. Increasing contact between humans and bat wildlife will further increase the zoonosis risk, which warrants closer attention to these viruses.IMPORTANCE The increased research on bat coronaviruses after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) allowed the very rapid identification of SARS-CoV-2. This is an excellent example of the importance of knowing viruses harbored by wildlife in general, and bats in particular, for global preparedness against emerging viral pathogens. The current effort to characterize bat rotavirus strains from 3 continents sheds light on the vast genetic diversity of rotaviruses and also hints at a bat origin for several atypical rotaviruses in humans and animals, implying that zoonoses of bat rotaviruses might occur more frequently than currently realized.

Rotaviruses gastroenteritis is a common disease in our geographic region. It shouldn't be un-derestimated due to a potentially life-threatening dehydration. A correct diet and ability toingest liquids orally are essential. More severe cases demand hospitalization and intravenousrehydration, nutritive and pharmacological treatment. Vaccination of children is appropriatealso due to socioeconomic problems that may be caused by these infections.

Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is a recently discovered RNA virus that belongs to the family Coronaviridae and genus Deltacoronavirus. This virus causes enteric disease in piglets that is characterized by enteritis and diarrhoea. In our present investigation, 189 diarrhoeic samples were collected between July 2016 and May 2017 from Tibetan pigs inhabiting in three different provinces surrounding the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China. We then applied the molecular-based method of reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCRs) to detect the presence of PDCoV in collected samples, and RT-PCR indicated that the prevalence of PDCoV was 3.70% (7/189) in Tibetan pigs. Four of 7 PDCoV-positive pigs were monoinfections of PDCoV, three samples were co-infections of PDCoV with porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV), and 52 (27.51%) samples were positive for PEDV. Four strains with different full-length genomes were identified (CHN/GS/2016/1, CHN/GS/2016/2, CHN/GS-/2017/1 and CHN/QH/2017/1), and their genomes were used to analyse the characteristics of PDCoV currently prevalent in Tibetan pigs. We found a 3-nt insertion in the spike gene in four strains in Tibetan pigs. Phylogenetic analysis of the complete genome and spike and nucleocapsid gene sequences revealed that these strains shared ancestors with the strain CHN-AH-2004, which was found in pigs from the Anhui province of China mainland. However, PDCoV strains from Tibetan pigs formed different branches within the same cluster, implying continuous evolution in the field. Our present findings highlight the importance of epidemiologic surveillance to limit the spread of PDCoV in livestock at high altitudes in China.

With the purpose of an estimation of the contribution of virus activators in the etiological structure of acute intestinal infections in children during the rise of prevalence of acute intestinal infections from 2009 to 2011 there were studied 1050 children admitted to the hospital with diarrheal diseases. It is established, that acute intestinal infections have a viral nature in 56.67% of cases. Thus the leading role belongs to rotaviruses and adenoviruses. Infectious agents of diarrheal diseases are rotaviruses in 28.1 % of cases, adenoviruses - in 17.05 %, and astroviruses - in 11.43 %. The viral monoinfections occur more often, than mixed-infections. The rise of sporadic diseases of viral diarrhea was characterized by seasonal prevalence. For intestinal infections of viral etiology the seasonal rise in a cold season with peak of the rate of diseases of rotaviral infection in April, adenoviral infection in November, and astroviral infection in December is characteristic.

Analysis of 476 faecal samples from diarrhoeic piglets was performed using electron microscopy (EM) and a competitive blocking (CB)-ELISA based on monoclonal antibodies to the VP6 protein of group A rotavirus. Rotavirus was detected by EM and/or CB-ELISA in 111 (23.3%) samples. Of these, all groups of rotavirus were identified in 83 (74.8%) samples by EM (EM+), while group A rotavirus was identified in 90 (81.1%) samples by CB-ELISA (ELISA+). However, only 62 (55.9%) of samples were positive using both detection methods. The finding of 28 (25.2%) EM-/CB-ELISA+ samples illustrated the high sensitivity of the CB-ELISA method. On PCR analysis, groups B and C rotavirus was found in 3 and 16 of 19 EM+/CB-ELISA- samples, respectively. Although the study illustrates the high sensitivity of a CB-ELISA in rotavirus detection, the findings highlight the need to use a range of diagnostic methods in detecting these viruses in clinical samples.

Rotavirové gastroenteritidy patří mezi nejčastější onemocnění v dětském věku postihující rozvinuté i méně rozvinuté země. Vysoké procento hospitalizovaných dětí, náklady na léčbu, komplikace a v zemích s nízkou úrovní zdravotní péče i úmrtí iniciovaly snahu vytvořit vhodnou vakcínu proti této infekční chorobě. Aktuálně využívané dvě perorální atenuované vakcíny jsou postupně v souhlase s doporučením Světové zdravotnické organizace (WHO) začleňovány do národních imunizačních programů. Země s kvalitní předvakcinační i vakcinační surveillance mají možnost sledovat ekonomický i zdravotní dopad vakcinace na zdraví dětské i dospělé populace.
Rotavirus gastroenteritides are among the most common childhood diseases affecting both developed and less developed countries. The high proportion of hospitalized children, treatment costs, complications and even deaths in countries with a low level of health care have initiated the efforts to develop a suitable vaccine against this infectious disease. The two currently used oral attenuated vaccines are being implemented in national immunization programmes in accordance with WHO recommendations. The countries with good-quality pre-vaccination and vaccination surveillance have an opportunity to observe the economic as well as health impacts of vaccination on the health of both the paediatric and adult populations. An example of a Central European country is Austria with available data covering the period of population-wide vaccination. These data can be utilized by other countries lacking such good-quality surveillance. Careful post-registration monitoring related to the potential minimal risk of increased intussusception continues to be of utmost importance.
