Two thermophilic mosquito species, Uranotaenia unguiculata and Anopheles hyrcanus, were identified in EVS mosquito trap catches from South Bohemia (Třeboň basin) in 2017 and 2018 as the first records in Bohemia. In August/September 2019, larvae of Culiseta longiareolata were collected at Petrovice near Humpolec (Bohemian- -Moravian highlands) as the first record of the species for the Czech Republic).
Here we report the first detection of lineage 2 of West Nile virus (WNV-2) from Culex modestus mosquitoes collected in the fishpond area situated in the Třeboň Basin in South Bohemia during mosquito season 2018. A total of 5816 mosquito females in 116 pools were investigated, and WNV RNA was detected in one pool. The WNV strain shares genetic homology with other WNV strains isolated in South Moravia as well as with viral strains causing outbreaks in southern and central Europe. The results highlight the need for entomological surveillance of WNV even in areas not yet affected (WNV-free areas). The South Bohemian Region, similarly to South Moravia, is becoming a potential risk zone for an autochthonous occurrence of West Nile fever in the Czech Republic.
Výsledky naznačují nezbytnost entomologické surveillance patogenních arbovirů i v lokalitách, kde dosud nebyl WNV prokázán. Here we report the first detection of lineage 2 of neuroinvasive West Nile virus (WNV-2) in mosquitoes collected in a fishpond area of the Trebon Basin in southern Bohemia during the 2018 mosquito season. A total of 6790 mosquito females belonging to the Culex modestus, Culex pipiens, and Coquillettidia richiardii species were investigated in 136 pools, and WNV RNA was detected in two of them. The WNV strain shares genetic homology with other WNV-2 strains isolated in southern Moravia as well as with those causing outbreaks in southern and central Europe. The results highlight the need for entomological surveillance of pathogenic arboviruses even in areas not yet affected (WNV-free areas). The South Bohemian Region (in addition to southern Moravia) is becoming another risk zone of autochthonous occurrence of West Nile fever in the Czech Republic.

Four commercially available essential oils (Eucalyptus sp., Lavandula officinalis, Citrus sinensis, and Melia azedarach) were tested for repellency against the tick Ixodes ricinus in comparison with the synthetic repellent DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide). The test substances were applied either topically or used directly in the process of fabric treatment (by spraying or impregnation). The horizontal circular test on the carton showed an initial difference in the repellency of not more than 10 % between the natural repellents and DEET; however, the fall off tests with vertical treated fabrics showed the synthetic repellent to be significantly superior to the four essential oils.

Ve sledovaných oblastech zjištěn výskyt 30 druhů komárů: Anopheles messea, An. maculipennis s.str., An. claviger, An. plumbeus, An. hyrcanus, Ochlerotatus cantans, Oc. annulipes, Oc.excrucians, Oc. flavescens, Oc. caspius, Oc. dorsalis, Oc. communis, Oc.leucomelas, Oc. cataphyla, Oc. sticticus, Oc. intrudens, Oc. rusticus, Oc. refiki, Oc. geniculatus, Aedes cinereus, Ae.rossicus, Ae.geminus, Culex pipiens, Cx. torrentium, Cx. territans, Cx. modestu, Culiseta annulata, Culiseta morsitans, Uranotaenia unguiculata, Coquillettidia richiardii. Povodně významným způsobem neovlivnily druhovou rozmanitost fauny komárů, významě ovlivnily kvantitu výskytu zvl. takzvaných kalamitních druhů Oc. sticticus a Ae.vexans.
In the early spring 2010, the usual seasonal occurrence of mosquito larvae was observed in the monitored lowland river areas. Local floods at the confluences of the Morava and Dyje rivers and the Vltava and Labe rivers were not associated with high mosquito abundance levels. Catastrophic floods in northern Moravia in the second half of May caused critical mosquito abundance levels in the Moravian-Silesian, Olomouc, Zlín and South Moravian Regions. On August 7, flash floods affected northern Bohemia; luckily they were not followed by high mosquito infestation. In early October, an unusual late occurrence of mosquito larvae was observed in the Mělník area. They survived until late November. In the monitored areas, as many as 30 mosquito species were identified: Anopheles messeae, An. maculipennis s.str., An. claviger, An. plumbeus, An. hyrcanus, Ochlerotatus cantans, Oc. annulipes, Oc. excrucians, Oc. flavescens, Oc. caspius, Oc. dorsalis, Oc. communis, Oc. leucomelas, Oc. cataphyla, Oc. sticticus, Oc. intrudens, Oc. rusticus, Oc. refiki, Oc. geniculatus, Aedes cinereus, Ae. rossicus, Ae.geminus, Culex pipiens, Cx. torrentium, Cx. territans, Cx. modestu, Culiseta annulata, Cs. morsitans, Uranotaenia unguiculata, and Coquillettidia richiardii. The floods had no major impact on mosquito species diversity, but were significantly associated with critical mosquito abundance of the disastrous species Oc. Sticticus and Ae. vexans.
In Central Europe, global climate change entails increasingly frequent weather extremes. At the end of June and the beginning of July 2009, sudden torrential rainfalls followed by flash floods have caused twelve casualties and 8.5 billion Czech crowns of damage. The most severe floods struck some areas of Northern Moravia and Southern and Northern Bohemia. Massive mosquito populations (Aedes vexans and Ochlerotatus sticticus) developed in regions where mosquitoes rarely cause major problems (e.g. in the Odra basin in the Nový Jieín district). In the flooded areas, mosquito larvae development was so rapid that no larvicidal control measures were possible to organize in time. Therefore, adulticidal thermal fogging with K.Othrin 25 SC was used locally in ground application for human settlements where the mosquito landing counts exceeded bearable limits.
