Background and Objectives: The development in the technology have witnessed that there is a revival of interest in drug discovery from medicinal plants for treatment of the most destructive diseases. Our investigation characterizes the usage of digital image processing techniques in Matlab to process and analyze the antimicrobial effects of the selected herbal plants. Methods: The first stage of our investigation involves the extraction of components with methanol from the selected three herbal plants- Solanum xanthocarpum, Solanum nigrum and Helianthus annuus by using soxhlet apparatus. These plant extracts were assayed for antimicrobial activity against 4 different bacterial and fungal species using disk diffusion method. Results: Notable cell growth inhibitions were observed from the selected microbes. Solanum xanthocarpum exhibits better antibacterial properties on comparison to other two extracts. Solanum nigrum and Helianthus annuus exhibit better antifungal properties by being sensitive factor towards fungal medium. The obtained images were processed using color coding techniques to determine the activity of the extract by isolating the region of inhibition area. The region of inhibition was measured using matlab code and tabulation was compiled to compare the manually measured distances to the automated measurements. Conclusions: The results provided evidence that the studied plant extracts might indeed be potential sources of natural antimicrobial agents and the introduction of an evaluation technique using image processing was shown to be suitable for the purpose of accurate measurements of zone of inhibition.

Tradiční čínská medicína je jednou z nejstarších léčebných metod na světě. Komplexní léčba pomocí tradiční čínské medicíny v sobě zahrnuje několik léčebných postupů podle potřeb daného jedince, vždy individuálně. V léčebných postupech dominuje fytoterapie, tedy bylinná léčba. Ta se právě považuje za kořeny, z nichž tradiční čínská medicína vyrůstá. Do léčebných metod déle patří akupresura, akupunktura, moxování, úprava stravování, cvičení a metoda přikládání baněk. Se stále rostoucím počtem příslušníků čínské a vietnamské minority v ČR dochází k častějšímu setkávání s odborným zdravotnickým personálem. Pro příslušníky čínské a vietnamské minority může mít tradiční čínská medicína velký význam jak v době zdraví, tak i nemoci. Současná koncepce českého ošetřovatelství je nastíněná tak, aby každému člověku, ať už jakékoli rasy, byla poskytnuta taková péče, která bude uspokojovat jeho bio-psycho-sociálně-religiózní potřeby. Jedním z cílů výzkumu bylo zjistit, jaké metody tradiční čínské medicíny využívají příslušníci čínské a vietnamské menšiny. Empirická část byla zpracována formou kvalitativního výzkumu. Technikou sběru dat byl polostrukturovaný rozhovor, který probíhal u vybraných respondentů čínské a vietnamské národnosti, žijících na území České republiky. Na základě rozhovorů u jednotlivých respondentů byly posléze vytvořeny kazuistiky. Ty tvořily výzkumný podklad pro sestavení kategorizačních tabulek a grafů, kde jsou sumarizovány nejdůležitější výsledky výzkumu. Z výsledků výzkumu vyplývá, že k nejčastěji používaným léčebným metodám patří u obou minorit bylinná terapie, která z velké části zasahuje do jejich životního stylu a kterou využívají na řadu zdravotních problémů. Ostatní léčebné metody sice nejsou tak používány jako bylinná terapie, přesto se však našla v našem výzkumném souboru řada respondentů využívající i ostatní metody tradiční čínské medicíny.

The traditional Chinese medicine is one of oldest medicinal methods in the world. The complex treatment with the help of traditional Chinese medicine includes several treatment procedures depending on needs of a given person, which are always individual. In therapeutic procedures, phytotherapy, i.e. treatment with herbs, is prevalent. This actually forms roots, which the traditional Chinese medicine is growing from. The treatment methods furthermore include the acupressure, acupuncture, use of moxa, adjustment of food, physical exercise and method of attaching flasks. The number of members of Chinese and Vietnamese minorities in the Czech Republic is ever growing and thus, their members ever more frequently come in contact with health professionals. For members of the Chinese and Vietnamese minorities, the traditional Chinese medicine can be of a great importance in health as well as in disease. The currently existing concept of the Czech nursing is outlined in such a way that any person of any race should be provided with a care satisfying his/her bio-psychosocial-religious needs. One of targets of our research was to find what the methods of the traditional Chinese medicine employed by members of the Chinese and Vietnamese minorities are. The empirical part was processed by the form of qualitative research. A semi-structured interview was used as a technique of the data accumulation, which was organized with selected respondents, members of the Chinese and Vietnamese minorities living in the Czech Republic. Based on the interviews with particular respondents, case reports were established. They formed a research basis for arranging categorization tables and graphs summarizing most important results of the research. The research of the results indicate that in both minorities, the most frequently employed treatment methods include herbal therapy, which considerably affects their life style and which is used by them for a number of health problems. The other treatment methods are not used as frequently as the herbal therapy, but our research group included a number of respondents, who also use the other methods of the traditional Chinese medicine.
