BACKGROUND: Victimization is associated with worse social and clinical outcomes of individuals with severe mental illness (SMI). A relapse of SMI may be one of the clinical consequences of assaultive trauma. As far as we know, there is no published study that analyzes nationwide health registers to assess the risk of SMI rehospitalization following assault. AIM: We aimed to assess whether exposure to assault is associated with an increased risk of psychiatric hospitalization in those with SMI. METHODS: We utilized data from the Czech nationwide registers of all-cause hospitalizations and all-cause deaths. We defined exposed individuals as those discharged from a hospitalization for SMI between 2002 and 2007, and hospitalized for serious injuries sustained in an assault in the subsequent 7 years. For each assaulted individual, we randomly selected five counterparts, matched on SMI diagnosis, age and sex, who were not assaulted in the examined time period. We used mixed effect logistic regression to assess the effect of assault on the risk of SMI rehospitalization within the following 6 months. We fitted unadjusted models and models adjusted for the number of previous SMI hospitalizations and drug use disorders. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 248 exposed and 1 240 unexposed individuals. In the unadjusted model, assaulted individuals were almost four times more likely to be rehospitalized than their non-assaulted counterparts (odds ratio (OR) = 3.96; 95% CI 2.75; 5.71). After adjusting for all covariates, the OR remained threefold higher (OR = 3.07; 95% CI 2.10; 4.49). CONCLUSION: People with a history of SMI hospitalization were approximately three times more likely to be rehospitalized for SMI within 6 months after an assault than their non-assaulted SMI counterparts. Soon after a person with SMI is physically assaulted, there should be a psychiatric evaluation and a close follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to monitor and analyze the influence of chosen family indicators related to alcohol consumption and experience of drunkenness in a representative sample of Czech children. METHODS: Data for our work were obtained from the Health Behaviour in School Aged Children (HBSC) study - a World Health Organization (WHO) cross national study. The sample consisted of 4,293 children aged 11, 13 and 15 years. Data collection was conducted in June 2010 in 88 randomly selected schools in the Czech Republic using standardized questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed in the program NCSS 9, methods of descriptive statistics, χ(2) test of independence in the contingency tables and logistic regression analysis were used. RESULTS: Regular alcohol consumption (at least weekly) was reported by 7.4% of children aged eleven, 19.3% of children aged thirteen and 38.4% of children aged fifteen years. Drunkenness at least twice in their life was admitted by 3% of children aged eleven, 15% of children aged thirteen and 43% of children aged fifteen years. Both alcohol consumption and drunkenness were significantly associated (p<0.001) with age and gender. Formal structure of family was found to have significant effect on the experience of drunkenness, but no effect on alcohol consumption was recorded. Based on our results, neither the amount of time spent together, nor the children communication with parents had a statistically significant influence on alcohol consumption or drunkenness experience within each family type. However, statistically significant differences were observed between different family types (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate a high degree of liberalism of Czech society towards alcohol. It appears that alcohol consumption will remain a serious problem in Czech society, therefore, more attention should be paid to this phenomenon in the future.

The aim of this paper is to show synergies of sport tourism attitudes in the concepts of sport and organized leisure by tour operators in the Czech Republic. The aims of the research were: to definite and to characterise sport excursions organized by tour operators as an important segment of tourism market and sport tourism market in the Czech Republic; to determine existence and to describe the relation between the participation at sport excursions organized by tour operators and the physical activity of their participants in the frame of the leisure; to define, to segment and to describe the distribution of consumers´ interests at the market of sport excursion organized by tour operators. Results of the research show that the current market of tour operators´ sport excursions in 2005 represents 17.7 % of the total tourism market in the Czech Republic. The market potential represents 67.6 % of the Czech tourism market under the given suppositions. The most popular sport excursions of tour operators according to the responders are those focused on cycling and mountain-biking (27 %). Less popular are rafting excursions (12 %), trekking (11 %), and excursions with aerobic and other fitness programs (10 %). 9 % of the responders would choose an expedition and 6 % of the market potential represent other excursions. Approximately half of the responded clients went on their trip with the use of complex services of a tour operator, half used a tour operator’s services only partially. These responders prefer travelling abroad on vacation, but a whole third of them spent their vacation in the Czech Republic. They favour mainly company of friends and partners. The demographic composition of these clients is represented a little bit more by men than women, a fifth is single and divorced and a fifth of the respondents is from the age category 25-34 years, university education predominates. More than a quarter of the clients belong to the category of personal net monthly income in the amount of 10-15 thousand CZK and a fifth to the category of the income above 30 thousand CZK. The result of the research in the area of the relation between participation at the sport excursions organized by the tours operators and the amount of physical activity of the participants can be interpreted that for half of the respondents (51 %) the participation at the excursion does play a role in motivation for sport activity before or after participating on a sport excursion. For the other half (49 %) of the respondents physical activity itself will probably be one of the motives for participating at a sport excursion.
